28. Broken

When I tried to log out, things didn't work like normal. I disappeared from the game world, but that was the only thing that stayed the same. Instead of waking up in my room, I was floating through space. At least, it looked like space. There were little points of light all over the place, and I thought I saw something like the Milky Way galaxy. There was nothing near me except darkness. Everything felt so far away.

Then, I was suddenly pulled, at super high speeds through space. I was able to see planets, stars, comets, asteroids, and all kinds of space things, but I was moving so fast that it felt like I only saw a blurry picture. My crazy flight through space finally stopped at a planet that looked like earth. I was a little dizzy and disoriented, so I wasn't sure if it was earth or not, but the blurry continents I could see seemed to be the right shape. I think I floated there for a few minutes while it felt like my head was spinning, then I fell into the planet.

And woke up in my room.

I quickly checked myself to make sure nothing was wrong, and other than a little queasiness, I was fine. So I ran the built in self test, spent some time in the bathroom, and checked online for anything about glitches with the game. I found a few things, but nothing that sounded anything like what I'd been through. Most of it was just people complaining about unfair advantages, or gameplay things that weren't really glitches. Apparently, there was a demon player who had conquered an entire city, and made slaves out of everyone. And he had done it without killing anyone. They made a deal with him that allowed him to rule them all. There were a lot of complaints about that being overpowered, or they didn't know what they were agreeing to, or slavery shouldn't be allowed.

After searching in vain, I checked the diagnostic, and saw no errors. I still had a few hours before I had to do anything in real life so I decided to log back in, and see if my notifications were still messed up. I was hoping ythat all I needed to do was turn it off and everything would work normally.

It didn't work normally. I got to fly through space again. It was just as disorienting as the last time, only I started at earth and shot out towards dark space. After that everything was the same. I was in the same space I logged out in, and I even got the normal welcome message. The first thing I did was check my menus. I didn't see anything wrong with them. No weird symbols, or messed up words. Everything was back to normal.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

"Bwyd, everything ok?" Marcus walked into the room.

"Yeah, I don't see anything wrong with my menus at all. Though, I flew through space before I got here."

"Flew through space?" He sat down at the table and started pulling things out of a bag and putting them on it.

"Yeah. At least, I think it was space. There were stars and planets and galaxies."

"Hmm, wish I could see that. Did you recognize anything?" He started making a circle with candles.

"I think I saw Earth, and the Milky Way. But I'm not too sure. Everything was a little blurry."

"Interesting. I'm running a little test on the crystal we found. I want to see if I can activate it." He placed a piece of the crystal in the middle of his candle circle.

"Are you sure that's a good idea?"

"Of course. I enjoy a little magical experimentation. Besides, I've already tried a bunch of other things on this crystal and nothing has done anything. This is basically a seance ritual. I'm hoping to get some kind of a reading from it." He started lighting the candles.

"What if it's a possesed crystal. The ghost might come out and eat you." I was trying to be sarcastic. I mean, who does a seance with a crystal?

"We will be safe from anything like that. This is a fantasy world, so we should be able to fight a ghost anyway."

Lily came running into the room, "Did someone say we're fighting ghosts?"

We both answered at the same time, "Marcus is doing a seance." "Probably not."

"Ooh. I love ghosts. Let me join." She gave Marcus a pleading look, and almost looked like she was about to cry at the same time.

"Fine, I'll just..."

"YAY! Thank you, thank you, thank you." She inturrupted him and gave him a big hug, then sat in a chair next to him.

"Bwyd, are you going to join us?" Marcus gestured to the seat on his other side.

"I guess so, I just don't want to actually fight a ghost."

Once we were all settled and Marcus had all the candles lit, we held hands, and he started chanting. I had no idea what he was saying, but it sounded a lot like music. His voice started out soft, and quiet, but as he continued he got louder, and louder. As he got louder, the flame on the candles got higher, and the lights in the rest of the room got dimmer. When the flames almost reached the ceiling, he stopped for a moment, and then started chanting in a monotone voice. With every word he spoke, it sounded like another voice joined him, and the candle flame changed from normal fire color to a pale blue. Then it was quiet. For a moment.

"AWAKEN!"

He shouted the last word in a very dramatic way, and the crystal responded in an equally dramatic way. No spirits appeared, but the crystal started vibrating, and flickering with white light. And then it exploaded in a brilliant flash of light. We were all blinded, I felt a little sick, and I'm pretty sure I heard Marcus puking, but it seemed like we were alright. As my vision started to return a familiar voice called out.

"Bwyd? How did you do that? Who are these people?"

It was the doctor.
