18: The start of Idiocracy

*Chapter 18: Desperation*

Charlotte desperately pleaded with Astaria for more power, and although Astaria agreed to help, she couldn't provide all her energy. She explained that she needed to keep some to communicate with "Him" and open the door if he returned.

"I still need some to try and get us out of here- and also to heal Kagami." Astaria's voice was filled with sadness. There was a hint of regret in her voice, but Charlotte reassured her to continue doing what she could, reminding her that both of them are relying on her. Astaria reluctantly agreed but made it clear, she would help the second they ask her to.

As Astaria began healing and transferring her energy to Charlotte, the monster sensed the energy shift and shifted its attention from Kagami, who was barely able to stand, to the two of them. Like a moth to the flames (Well, well, well) The monster moved with predatory speed, saliva dripping from it's multiple faces into the ground as it quickly approached.

However, Charlotte and Astaria weren't done yet neither they were ready to face him. While Charlotte's body had improved and healed a little, the energy transfer wasn't complete. Fearing that the monster would reach them before the process finished, Kagami made a desperate attempt to hold the creature back. He faced off against the monstrous foe, as he held and prevented him from moving using his both hands and even his teeths (to get a better grip on him),

Kagami's shoes turned into a broken remnants and the ground's beneath his feet broke from the sheer force.

Struggling against his limit, Kagami's face turned red, and his eyes felt like they would explode. Blood oozed from his teeth, as he continued bitting into the monster's body as a makeshift anchor.

"Hurry!" Kagami shouted through his struggle, attempting to keep the monster's attention while holding his huge body at Bay, allowing Astaria to complete her task.

Charlotte saw Kagami's desperate efforts and pushed Astaria away, instructing her to lower her energy and continue her work. Astaria tried to explain that she wasn't finished yet, but Charlotte knew she had to take action sooner than later.

Determined to divert the monster's attention, Charlotte positioned herself and ran to the far end of the room while letting her energy and Mana run wild, her heart pounding. Filled with fear and confusion, yet resolute in her desire to help Kagami and Astaria while trying to keep the monster focused on her, she unleashed her most potent attack.

"Spear Shower," Charlotte declared, raising her hands and pointing them at the colossal monster. A torrent of lightning arrows materialized above the creature, descending upon it as a wave. The monster quickly extended one of its massive hands and caught Kagami breaking his bones, and throwing him toward the wave of arrows.

In a split second, Kagami passed through the barrage of arrows, crashing in front of Charlotte. He was(to put it lightly) severely injured, with arrows piercing through his entire broken body, bleeding all over the place, especially his hands and legs as he used them as shields to protect his head from the arrows and the wall. His life was hanging by a thread as Astaria shouted his name and cried from the terrifying view she witnessed, and Charlotte stood unsure of what to do, her fear and regret was apparent.

The monster, employing a tactic similar to Kagami's, protected itself by creating a shield of tightly wrapped hands. The arrows inflicted minimal damage. The situation grew increasingly dire, and the monster's malevolent laughter echoed louder than ever.

As Charlotte struggled to find words to explain the situation and the monster's shadow loomed over her, Astaria remained on the ground, traumatized by what she had just witnessed. Charlotte swiftly turned around to offer some explanation, but before she could speak, a small gap opened beneath her feet, and she fell into the void, disappearing from the room.

The monster, now agitated from what he saw and furious, began pounding the walls and shouting for the door to open. Its voice grew more distorted as it continued to shout and swear at an unknown presence he felt outside. As Kagami lay on the ground, his vision blurred, he muttered a name with fading consciousness.

"As... ta... ria?" Kagami thought it was her who opened the gap, his voice was weak, and his vision was fading. He realized that the crying girl before him isn't the one who did it. For Astaria was weeping and couldn't even form a meaningful word, so how could she help? Perhaps his mind was playing tricks on him, as it often did before it began to shut down for good, but he was confused about if she's actually useless or not.

With a faint smile, Kagami gazed up at the ceiling, not wanting his last memories to be of someone he had known for only few days crying over him. If this was the end, he wanted to go with a smile on his face and pretending he didn't hurt anyone again.

(And pretending he didn't hear the ugly cry from Astaria, because he found it annoying.)
