Chapter 39 - Merlis's Grand Magic Class: The Origin, and the First Law

God creates the universe

God creates the stars

God creates the Earth

Then... God creates the People

The First People, The First Race, The First Lifeform

And from the First Lifeform, everything is made…

"Or so is the creation myth of this planet. There are some parts I heavily disputed against my peers, but so far the evidence track.”

Writing out the shortened version of the Creation Poem, she steadily explained to them the origin of it all, with some complementary images. Merlis meticulously draws the creation story with unrestrained glee, even if the scene of the titan ripping its own bone and meat looks straight out of a medical book for cannibals.

"Anyway...it's said that the First Race creates everything on this barren planet with their own body and fills it with life. It's said that their mind creates the sky, their fluid creates the sea, their flesh creates the land, and their bonescreate the mountains. Then, to fill it with life, they create even more life from their own eggs and seeds, and those very lives are the ancestors of all life on the planet, called the Origin Race."

“The Origin Race, said to be the very egg and seed of all life, is known for their capability of transforming and adapting into any other races within this land, and even creating new ones. Because of that, they're very heavily sought after, and people have spent their entire life searching for them, for various purposes, kind and unkind."

Fortunately, the next scene doesn't look as anatomical, and instead, she decided to depict it as a cute blob of people holding an even cuter, tinier blob in their hand.

“Kyu (Question, you said as if the Origin Race still exists to this very day.)" JustADragon (an Origin Race (Baby Dragon) player) asked oh so innocently, purely for academic purposes. "Kyu (I thought that they all have already turned into those countless races and lived out their natural lifespan.)"

“Astute observation and speculation, Dragon, but evidence points toward otherwise." Merlis perfectly responds "It's said in ancient texts that some members of the Origin Race’s willing to stay as they are, and dedicated their immortal life as guardians and managers of the planet, keeping watch to ensure the proper growth and proliferation of all lifeforms. There are many proofs of their existence in current times as well, so the search for them remained unceasing.”

“Kyu... (Ahh… Another question, teacher: Why is the Origin Race considered the origin of all races, instead of the First Race?)”

“Excellent question, Dragon. Unfortunately, the answer to that question is still unknown.” Praising Dragon, she then frowned sadly. “No ancient texts that we found satisfyingly explain this question, and all that is going on are just endless theories, debates, and guesswork. My personal thesis about it is that because the First Race isn't what is considered "proper Lifeform", but there isn't a good explanation for why that is the case…”

“Well, that’s enough with the tangent. Now, a question: If this is a class about Magic, why do I spend all this time so far explaining the origin of everything?” Temporarily putting her marker to the side, she then asked the class below with an inquisitive tone, “This is a simple question to answer, so anyone wants to take the chance?"

“Kyu, Kyu!”

"Thank you, Dragon, but please leave this question for all the other students, okay?"

Ignoring the ceaselessly raised hand of the little dragon, she looks through the countless other hands hanging in the air, before picking at one especially burly hand, barely raised due to the increased gravity.

“Oh right, forget that you’re still here.” Quickly dispelling the weight, she nonchalantly asked him, “So what is your answer, Mr. Headmaster?”

“Argh… much appreciated, Grand Sage.” Stretching his hand and rotating his shoulder to adjust himself, the Headmaster politely thanked her “For my answer...is it because, since Magic is Everything, the origin of magic is the origin of everything?”

“That’s right! As expected of the Headmaster.” She clapped in congratulation. “However, for every single practitioner of magic, learning about the origin of everything has another special meaning..."

Bringing out a simple candle, she lit it with a simple lighter, letting the bright tall flame catch everyone's eye. The flame burns and flickers so cleanly and brightly, as if it's a fire of old.

“Fire can be made with heat, air, and fuel. The fuel acts as material, the heat acts as the trigger, and the air acts as the oxidizing agent, which continues and amplifies the heat." She talks with a wise tone, her eyes still resting on the flame. "With the 3 conditions met, fire can be made again and again, just as how the first fire is born, just as how the first spark is made in people’s hand, and just as how the first fire magic is created.”

Then, creating a flame with just a snap of her finger, she let the flame come close to the candle's light, comparing its shape. The two flames are just as tall and bright as each other, as if they're a mirror image.

“If a phenomenon is made once, it can be made again, as long as you can provide the necessary conditions and requirements, and follow the necessary patterns. If it can be made again by natural processes, it can be made by magic.”

“From such conjecture, we can surmise that anything in the world can be made by magic...even if it’s the very act of creation itself.”

Finally, she let the flame join together, and combined, the flame then began to burn more than twice as bright and hot, its color a pure white, reminiscent of light itself, made from the very beginning of time. That light soon consumes the wick of the candle to its very bottom, eating it until there is no more trace.

From behind the flame, the first law; the very first lesson all magicians and would-be wizards learned by heart, is written proudly on the whiteboard.

"First Law of Magic: Anything that can exist in the natural world, can be replicated with magic."

"Following this law, it has been all magician’s goal to create a spell that can replicate any phenomenon in the world. A spell that can re-enact the very first moment of the world itself.”

With that statement booming in their ears, all the students below become mesmerized, finding themselves staring at the word above. Seeing them imagining the possibilities, she looks at all of them, satisfied.

For even though only some may follow the path of a magician, all of them are now ready to further understand the most important, foundational knowledge of magic.
