Chapter 5

YEAR: 1724. JUNE 8TH. LOCATION: THE FRONT OF THE IMPERIAL CAMP.

I loaded more arrows in a catapult as I continuously fired the catapult into the direction of the commander’s tent.

By some coincidence, I had found a catapult that was not far away from the tent where explosives are. I then got an idea and dragged the catapult near the tent. Thanks to the catapult having wheels, it was easy to move it.

However, even with the wheels, it would be normally impossible to drag a full sized catapult by a single 8-year old. Though this wasn’t a normal world anymore. The Imperial had developed their catapult to the point that it could be used by a single soldier. The entire catapult was fused with mana. The wheels were enchanted with wind magic made to help the catapult move like an engine, the restraining rope could be drawn back by a lever that was also infused with wind magic, and many other things. It was basically automatic.

“In short, it is a perfect machine to even use by an eight year old child.” I laughed maniacally, pulling the level to fire.

The guards were the thing I was most worried about but my worries were never found as I saw the guards also joined in drinking with other soldiers.

The next story was simple: I loaded the catapults full of arrows instead of boulders as the payload and launched them in the sky while trying to calculate the distance with the map of the camp I found.

I failed several times due to lack of experience, but it rarely mattered as those failed shots earned me the deaths of more Imperial soldiers. The smoke rising from the fire helped fix the distance for the catapults.

Some soldiers did come to the location of the catapult to see what was going on, but I quickly disposed of them with the arrows. Just a scratch from the tip could earn a start of the fire from the soldier. A full hit? I got a smell of human flesh burning.

After many failures, I finally hit the commander’s tent. I wasn’t sure if I hit the commander tent, but the smoke rising from the direction was the biggest. I also checked the map I had found in one of the tents from the Imperial and the direction matched, so I confirmed it must be the commander’s tent.

From that point on, I poured as many arrows I could fit in the payload and launched them in the air.

Some of the arrows of course, fell some distance away as the catapult wasn’t built to fire multiple objects rather a single object. However, I didn’t care as those arrows would hit more imperial soldiers. I could only pray that no allies were hit.

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

I kept reloading the arrows and firing them in the same direction over and over again, slightly changing the directions so it would have a wide range. The smell of burning flesh really got into my nose quite badly.

After firing twenty times, I was running out of arrows. The shots before hitting the commander’s tent was a big part of the factor, but enchanted arrows weren’t common enough to have big stock in them even in the military. At least, not in this army.

Just as I was finishing loading the last one, a group of soldiers suddenly appeared, surrounding me with a single glare. Their spear, and swords were all pointed directly at me.

I froze before quickly pulling the lever, making the final wave of arrows launch in the sky. When I saw the arrows successfully flying in the sky, I then finally raised my hand to show I meant no violence.

However, it hardly mattered as the Imperials were going to kill me. After all, I had killed their comrades just now. On top of that, I was a slave making up a perfect excuse for killing me even if I surrendered.

‘So for my brilliant plan of escaping here alive.’ I thought as I closed my eyes, ready to embrace death.

I would be lying if I didn’t have any regrets, but I was too afraid to think right now.

However, nothing happened for a few seconds. I waited until one of the soldiers opened his mouth. “Are you the one responsible for this?”

Thinking that lying wouldn’t get me out, I simply nodded.

“You can rest. We are the light infantry in the 9th Corps. I am Captain Deryk. We are here to assist you in any way we can.”

I opened my eyes and stared at the person who introduced himself as Captain Deryk. Looking more closely, I could see that the uniforms of the soldiers were different from the Imperials.

Feeling slightly embarrassed by my mistake, I replied. “I already used most of the arrows so all I had to do was kill any imperials around here.”

“Then it shall be done.” Deryk gestured to the other soldiers to move.

Less than a minute later, screams could be heard all around where I was standing. I finally noticed the scene I had made; fire burning around everywhere with blood curdling screams of the Imperials..

“Can I ask a question?” I asked, starting to feel my eyelids heavy.

“Sure, what is it?” Deryk responded with a smile.

“Can you carry me?”

That was the last thing I said on the battlefield before I passed out.

Later, this battle was known as the Iron Thrust, the night raid made by the 9th Corps, the Iron Vanguard.

Major General Ayas’ army lost over 15,000 men along with 900 knights with every war machine destroyed. The supplies were either stolen or burned down by the 9th Corps soldiers. Many of the promised military officers were lost in the battle.

For the 9th Corps, only 40 were lost along with 450 slaves who fought the guards. They were able to gain a lot of supplies from the Imperials as well as the head of Major General Ayas along with his advisors.

The one who had contributed to the battle most was Aaron, later known as the Silver Angel, the hero of Shiena Kingdom. This was the start of the story for the hero who had defeated the undefeatable Emavia Empire.
