Chapter 4

YEAR: 1724. JUNE 8TH. LOCATION: THE FRONT OF THE IMPERIAL CAMP. ACTUAL TIMELINE: FEW HOURS AGO.

“I don't want to die!” A slave cried out.

“Shut up!” An officer shouted, whipping the slave who just shouted. “You would kill as many enemies as possible before you cause a big racket in the front for our allies to attack the three sides.”

I didn’t know if it was a good thing or not as Lieutenant General Cedric did follow my instructions to attack the enemy at night. However, I, along with 500 slaves, were tasked to kill as many imperial soldiers as possible before we cause a big racket to draw the attention of the imperial soldiers.

I only proposed the plan so I could survive. However, they send me to die in a battle. What a sense of irony! I almost wished that I stayed put so that I didn’t have to put up in the front line, which is the last thing I wanted to do.

I might have some chance of surviving with my strong physical body, but the weapons they gave out crushed the chance. Nobody in the army offered any armor or good weapons to us.

Many of the slaves were holding kitchen knives while a few held a rusted dagger. Not a single of them had a sword. I was holding two forks that were no bigger than my own hands. Basically, they were telling us to die.

At least give us some proper weapons dammit it!

“Whoever abandons their duty will be severely tortured before getting killed!” The officer shouted, his voice full of displeasure. “Furthermore, whoever contributes the most in the battle will have freedom.”

At the word, ‘freedom’, many of the slaves’ eyes lit up. A few who had been complaining and crying about not wanting to fight also shut up as they had new determination in their eyes.

The reason was simple, they wanted freedom more than anything else. They had already worked endless ever since they got sold as a war slave and they wanted to free once again to avoid their duty.

“Now, get out there and kill those Imperials!” The officer shouted, and all of the slaves roared back in response.

You do realize this is a stealth mission, right? I thought as I quietly followed my fellow slaves. Making a big racket like that wouldn’t be wise.

Just like I had predicted, the guards stationed at the outskirts of the camp came charging in while noticing other guards. The battle began between 500 slaves and 50 guards. However, it didn’t take long to figure out who was winning.

“Keep the line!”

“Even though the enemy numbers more than us, they don’t have any good weapons or armors with them! Don’t freak out!”

“Keep calm and we will win!”

The 500 slaves barely had any weapons or armors on while the Imperial soldiers had all the equipment they needed. Even though the slaves numbered ten times more than the soldiers, they didn’t have any battle experiences like the soldiers did. They just knew how to swing their weapons which barely scratched the guard’s armor.

It was like a bunch of mosquitoes were attacking the lion. Annoy the lion, but never deal any damage toward them.

The battle went to the Imperial soldier’s favor as slaves began to fall to the ground, dead. Some slaves tried to run away but only for them to choke because of their collar. It was a massacre.

However, with the battle going on, nobody was able to spot the silver hair child, me sneaking into the camp.

When the battle first started, I stayed hidden in the dark until every guard’s attention was drawn to the slaves. Then, I sneaked into the camp. Since there really wasn’t a wall to separate the outside, I sneaked in easily.

I had already figured out that fighting with the slaves wouldn’t serve any purpose except to die in a meaningless death. Instead, I planned to take the advantage of the battle and sneak into the camp, stealing any weapons that might be useful.

Cold you say? Well, I wasn’t exactly a hero and I didn’t have any power to save them. If anything, I might die without achieving anything. In order to be safe and contribute to battle, I needed to kill and to obtain freedom and I needed to have the achievements.

When I got to the camp, I could see soldiers lying on the ground, either drunk or fast asleep. The loud noises from the fight didn’t seem to affect them at all as they continued to snore away. I didn’t complain about them though as I found an iron dagger lying around on the ground.

I quickly used the dagger to slide the throat of the Imperial soldiers. The lack of strength made it hard for me to carry out in action, but they were too drunk to wake up. The Imperial soldiers quietly passed away, and the process repeated itself.

Seriously, where are the Imperial soldiers? I thought as I slid another Imperial soldier’s throat. All I see are drunken bastards. I hadn’t seen a single soldier who was in their right mind.

In fact, every soldier I came across was lying on the ground, fast asleep. Even with those who were awake, they were around a campfire, singing and drinking at the same time.

I left those soldiers alone as I couldn’t take them on his own. Even if they were drunk, they were trained soldiers. It wouldn’t be surprising if they attacked me through their muscle memories from their training. I didn’t want to risk any chance of getting killed.

After silently going through various tents, killing and stealing whatever I could find, I finally came across a tent that was slightly bigger than the other tents. There were actual guards stationed outside, and they were not drunk or asleep.

Thinking that it may be the commander’s tent, I grew excited. After all, this was the only place where there were soldiers who weren’t drunk or asleep meaning they must be doing something important. I would be freed if I achieved a great feat and killing the commander of the Imperial soldiers just might be the way to do it.

The only problem was the guards. They weren’t drunk, meaning I didn’t have any chance of killing them just like I did with the drunken soldiers.

Quickly thinking, I threw a dagger as hard as he could toward the guards.

Since I didn’t know how to properly throw the dagger and there wasn’t any strength behind the dagger, the dagger bounced harmless. However, it was still enough to make contact with the guard’s armor. The guards looked surprised at the sudden appearance of the dagger and tried to find the source.

“Hey, why did you throw the dagger?!” I shouted, trying my best to make my voice deep like a man’s voice. “That’s my favorite, you know!”

The guards looked at the direction of the voice in full displeasure as they made their way to the campfire where drunken soldiers were.

0 point for the guards. I thought as I sneaked to the tent. Who is stupid enough to leave the tent unguarded? Are they even taking the job seriously? Though I guess there are more guards in the tent if they are so confident.

I quietly sneaked into the tent, expecting to see more guards or perhaps, a defenseless commander by himself. Though I didn’t like the former choice since I didn’t have any meanings of fighting.

However, what I didn’t expect was a row of boxes lined up, each having a label 'Explosives.’

When I opened one of them, they contained the same arrows that were used at the previous battle, the tip having the enchantment with fire magic. There were loads of them in a single box.

Suddenly, an idea popped up from my mind as I smiled. From outside, it looked evilly as I could feel my own sinister aura emitting.

“Well, the officer said I need to make a huge racket.” I took out several arrows out of the box, carcassing the tip as if it was a baby. “Then I will give it to them.”

YEAR: 1724. JUNE 8TH. LOCATION: THE REAR OF THE IMPERIAL CAMP.

Lieutenant General Cedric couldn’t help but stare at the arrows raining down at the commander’s tent. The endless amount of arrows were merciless as they pierced anybody who was near the commander tent. Some even hit allies who got too close.

However, it didn’t end there as they were enchanted arrows. Whatever the arrow got contacted burst into flames; the ground, the tent, and even the soldiers. It was a living hell.

“Are you telling me,” Cedric said after collecting himself. “The war slaves did this?”

Cedric never thought that mere war slaves could advance this much on their own. Sure, they had the element of surprise, but it would still be a suicide to charge in a place full of soldiers who were well trained even if they were drunk. However, the response from the scout left Cedric more astonished.

“Yes sir. The attack came from the front of the camp. We have yet to identify who was responsible for this kind of attack. However, we expect this was carried out by a few individuals as we were informed that many of the war slaves died in the battle fought right in front of the camp.”

“A few individuals?” Cedric repeated weakly, stroking his beard. “Tell the heavy infantry to surround the bombaring zone to kill any staggers. Tell the light infantry to go to the front and support whoever is firing those arrows.”

“Yes sir!” The runner shouted as he ran off to inform the officers of the order.

“What do you think Devon?” Cedric swung his spear, killing the final soldier in his way.

“Lord Cedric, I think that the person who sent the letter and the one responsible for this is the same.” Devon replied with a frown.

Devon couldn’t help but suspect that whoever proposed this operation was also responsible for the arrow attack; it all seemed too good to be true. First, the raid had gone almost too smoothly, and second, the soldiers who hadn’t been drinking and were positioned to protect their commander were all killed by the enchanted arrows that rained down around the command tent.

To Devon, it looked like the person all planned this from the start as if they knew it would happen.

“Well, what do you think we should do to them?” Cedric asked, a hint of humor in his voice.

“We should try to figure out who they are before deciding what to do with them.”

“Well we have a lot of time to decide that.”

The two officers continued to look at the living hell as the moonlight shone brightly in the sky.
