CHAPTER 482
"Sir, I found it." The bodyguard took out a jade emblem from Peachlyn's bedroom.
Enraged, she threw herself on the bodyguard while shrieking, "That's mine! Give it back to me!"
The bodyguard swiftly avoided her and walked up to Jericho to hand the jade emblem to him.
"Jeric, please. I know I was wrong; I really do…" Peachlyn rushed to him as she bitterly cried.
However, Jericho ignored her and said to Milana, "Let's go."
"Aye." Milana looked cheerful.
Now that we've taken back the jade emblem, Peachlyn will have nothing to do with our family anymore. I won't ever have to see that hypocrite's face again!
While Milana was her parents' biological daughter, Peachlyn was but an adoptee of their family. She thought that Peachlyn should be grateful that their family had raised her. Instead, not only was Peachlyn ungrateful, but she kept trying to compete with her! NôvelD(ram)a.ôrg owns this content.
But she had nothing she could compete with Milana.
Milana was the only girl in their family at first, but they soon had to raise another child because of Peachlyn's existence. She hadn't even complained about it, but it worsened when Peachlyn constantly went against her. It irked Milana how Peachlyn would always look at her with an aggrieved gaze as if she had bullied her.
It all worked out fine now considering that Peachlyn was kicked out of the house. Milana wouldn't ever have to see that annoying face anymore.
This is fantastic!
As Milana happily hopped off with Jericho beside her, Peachlyn tried to go after them, only to be stopped by the Clarke Family's bodyguards.
The muscles only left after the Clarke siblings rode off in a car.
Jericho was already gone by the time Peachlyn went outside.
Distraught, she stumbled back to the apartment where she and Hugo lived.
Her suitcase and backpack were by the door of the unit when she arrived.
Her heart further dropped when she was hit by realization, and she hurried over to knock on the door.
The door remained shut even after a long minute had passed, but Hugo did pull open the small ventilation window on the door from inside eventually.
He then peered at her with cold eyes through the barbed wire on the window.
"What are you doing, Hugo?" She suppressed her panic and forced a smile. "I didn't bring my keys, Hugo. Open the door for me, will you?"
However, the man continued to look at her without an ounce of emotion in his eyes. "I rented this unit. It is my name that is written on the rental agreement. Didn't you want to marry Zachariah? Go ahead. I don't want to see your face again."
He felt as though his heart was being stabbed with a knife when he overheard what Peachlyn said to Jericho while he hid in the bedroom.
He had sacrificed too much to elope with Peachlyn.
The Sanburnes were not as powerful as the Soulsbys or the Clarkes. The moment he decided to elope with Zachariah's fiancée, his grandfather announced the separation of their family from the Sanburne Family out of worry that the Soulsbys would retaliate against them.
Hugo's father was the eldest son of his grandfather, and he was supposed to be the heir of the Sanburne Family.
However, he lost his chances because Hugo eloped with Peachlyn.
After his bank account was frozen, he called his mother on the quiet and asked for money. His mother had cried and scolded him on the phone about how he was unfilial and black-hearted, and that she had never had a son like him.
He could tell how heartbroken his mother was, and that was when he started having regrets.
He thought that he had acted thoughtlessly. For the sake of love, he caused his father to lose his status as the heir and his mother to go through such heartache.
But his regret then was only a tiny crumb. He thought that true love was never wrong.
The Soulsbys and Clarkes were powerful. If he didn't elope with Peachlyn, she would have no choice but to marry the crippled Zachariah.
The rest of Peachlyn's life would be ruined then.
He chose to save her life and his love. Even though he was sorry for his parents, he had to make such a decision to save her.
But when he heard what Peachlyn said to Jericho, his whole world collapsed.
He had contributed and sacrificed so much, only to hear her begging and crying to Jericho about how she had made a mistake, and she wanted to go back with Jericho to marry Zachariah.
His heart had completely shattered then.
This was the love he got in return for sacrificing his father's position and hurting his mother.
They weren't even bankrupt and still had some money left, but Peachlyn had already betrayed him.
He couldn't help thinking how he must have been blind to fall for a woman like her. It was for her that he had broken his parents' hearts.
He didn't need a woman like her.
When Peachlyn hurried after Jericho, Hugo had gone to her bedroom and stuffed her belongings into a
suitcase before tossing it outside.
He then said the same thing as the Clarke siblings did. "Take your things and get out of here. I don't ever want to see you again."
"What are you doing, Hugo?" Peachlyn knocked on the door anxiously. "Hugo, please, open the door! Let's talk it out!"
Now that she had lost the protection of the Soulsbys and the Clarkes, she couldn't afford to lose Hugo as well.
It was too dangerous and difficult for a single woman to live outside. She couldn't leave Hugo until she found the next person who could protect her.
Moreover, even though he was down and out now, what if his parents forgave him someday? After all, everybody's hearts were connected with their parents.
As long as Hugo could return to the Sanburne Family, she could live a happy life with him.
"I have nothing to say to you," he sneered in reply. "Didn't you change your mind and decide to marry Zachariah Soulsby? Go ahead and get married to him then! I don't want to see you again!"
"Please don't do this, Hugo. Hear me out!" As Peachlyn blurted out her explanation, she racked her brain, but still couldn't think of a reason to convince him.
She had only said those words to Jericho because she thought Hugo wasn't home.
She had been too straightforward. Unless Hugo loved her to the point of not caring about anything she did, it would be difficult for her to persuade him to accept her again.
Distressed, she couldn't help but cry again.
How could she have put herself in this situation?
She had lost the whole game because of one wrong move she made.
Not only did she fail to go back to the Clarke Residence with Jericho, but she also lost Hugo who had always been devoted to her.
Hugo had never been more clear-headed than now, and he refused to listen to her explanation.
Bam!
He closed the window with a slam and never opened the door or window again no matter how much she cried and begged outside.
She continued to stay outside the door until late at night, yet zero movements could be heard in the unit. Hungry and sleepy, she had no choice but to drag her luggage with her and leave.
By the time she came back for Hugo the next day, the apartment had already been cleared out.
She didn't know where he went to, but the man had definitely left Wendel City.
She couldn't do anything but falter to the floor and sob with her palms over her face.
Nothing.
She had nothing left.
Absolutely nothing.
She had never felt such strong regret before today. But now, it was too late. She had no way to redeem herself.
While she cried, Madeline received Jericho's commission fee, which perfectly explained what it meant for some to be more fortunate than others.
