Chapter 9

“Dungeon portal activation imminent.” The voice pulled me out of the darkness and I opened my eyes. “Portal activation imminent.” The voice said again.

“Are we merging with another dungeon?”

“No”

“Then what.”

“The dungeon is connected to a world.”

“Wait, like it could connect to Earth?”

“Insufficient data.”

“Like, the dungeons I had been to in the past. There was a vortex on the planet and we went through it into a dungeon.”

“Correct. Connecting to world in 30 seconds.”

“Hold up. I am not ready for this.” My heart was pounding. What if it connected to Earth? Would I be able to see anyone that I knew before? No, I'm a monster now. They would probably try and kill me. Does that mean that if humans came into my dungeon I would be forced to kill them?

“Dungeon portal activated. Connection to the world is complete. The dungeon is on standby for 30 days.” I jumped at the announcement and immediately sent out a telepathic command to all spiders. They were to move into position for battle immediately. I had the two tanks in the second room from the end. The poison spiders made their spots in the trees with an easy escape to the caves if needed, and the trap spider moved to the first cave. All other non-combative spiders came back to the throne room. The surveillance spider had been parked in the trees for quite some time now and I activated my security screen. At the back of the forested area was a portal. I sensed as I looked through the eyes of the surveillance spider and waited, and waited, and waited some more.

“Well, this is certainly anti-climactic,” I said under my breath. “No point in staying here then. I picked up my new shield that the miners had kindly made along with my hammer and made my way to the forested area. I walked up to the portal. It was a large portal that looked exactly like it always did. I placed my hand on it expecting to feel the same light tug I normally did when entering a portal but instead was met with a wall. I pushed harder on it, even leaning my entire body weight against the portal to no avail.

“Alright, what the hell is this?”

“The dungeon is on standby for 30 days.”

“Standby, What do you mean?”

“The portal is a one-way door for the next 30 days.” I facepalmed myself at those worlds. Obviously, that's how it worked. When dungeons appeared on Earth, they were sealed for a time. If we did not kill the dungeon boss in time, then there would be a dungeon break where monsters were free to come through on our side. Even when we raided the dungeon we were not able to leave until we killed the dungeon master.

“And after 30 days?”

“The portal will open up on both sides.”

“Then after that?”

“There will be steady repulsion until the dungeon is pulled away from the world and enters into dimensional space once again.” It made sense from the little we knew about dungeons on Earth. There were some cases where after a dungeon break occurred if they could hold out long enough it would eventually disappear.

“Alright, so we just guard the area for 30 days and see what happens. While here we can only be attacked through that portal?”

“No. It is unlikely but there is a chance that another dungeon can merge with ours.” Today was full of fun surprises.

“Great, because that is exactly what we need.” I huffed and made my way back to the throne giving the order that we needed everyone to work on shifts for the time being and to be especially watchful for any movement from the portal.

I remember that as a human when a new dungeon popped up, it took a few days at least to get a good read on it and prepare a team to enter. It was always tricky to enter a new dungeon. We had no way of knowing exactly what the dungeon type was. The only thing we could tell was the grade of the dungeon and used that to base who and how many we sent into the dungeon. I distinctly remember that we had to pack for every weather condition as well as food for at least 2 weeks not to mention weapons and armor and ways to repair that if needed. Speaking of armor, I was definitely lacking in the protection aspect. Hey, maybe if someone comes through I can take their armor and use it. The thought of me killing a human and taking their clothes made me cringe a little. We will just have to see what happens.

For the next week, we got on a good rotation schedule watching the portal and guarding the tunnels. During the tunneling to the forest area, we had managed to collect enough crystals for 3 more spiders. I summoned a tank to help out with rotations and kept the other two spaces open for now. We tried to keep some semblance of a normal life while also being extra cautious and on edge.

I was about to give up on the strict watch schedule when the portal finally moved. I closed my eyes and looked through the security spider 1. There was a small timer at the top letting me know that it had been 12 days since the portal had opened. I called all of the spiders to their position and waited with bated breath. The vortex flickered and three figures moved in. They were smooth and quiet with their movements and looked around their surroundings. Each one held a bow with a small sword attached to their hips. They were well-dressed and armored. They were definitely human looking. I Zoomed in a little to get a closer look. The poison spider in the trees moved to get a better angel and all eyes shot up to it.

“Fuck! Everyone get out of there!” All three of the elves locked onto the poison spider and drew back arrows firing before I was done giving the command. Each arrow stuck the spider with painful accuracy and it dropped to the ground dead.
