Life In the Expanse Pt. 12

I Got Reincarnated as a Goat

“How much do you know?” Thneia asked.

“I know that Rendaya was once home to both Rendaro and Humans. But… it seems as though the Civil War wasn’t the only reason behind the city's fall.” Shiru said.

“And what do you think was the other reason?” Thneia asked. Her voice a low purr the shook the air.

“I was hoping you’d tell me that “

Silence filled the air as Shiru and Thneia looked into each other’s eyes.

The servants eventually arrived with food and, without saying anything, everyone ate.

They finished eating just as the sun sunk into the horizon, casting a deep darkness onto Coh.

Thneia wiped her mouth with a handkerchief before looking up, seemingly in thought.

“Perception dictates all.” She eventually muttered.

“What you know is the truth. Rendaya fell by the hands of its own people.” Thneia said before standing up.

“It’s getting late. Allow me to accompany you home.”

Shiru nodded before leading Erna in following Thneia out of the Dragon Borrow.

They then made their way home where the dragon knight bid them goodnight.

Shiru and Erna then crawled into bed where they quickly found sleep.

.

..

Deag awoke to a rather pleasant sight.

Fìor soundly slept, her face a few centimetres away from his. Her every pore illuminated by the grey morning sunlight.

Deag smiled warmly before sneaking out of bed.

He then changed into his uniform just as Fìor awoke.

“War room?” She whimpered.

“No, I’m going to a guest house where our Sumarati guests are. We’ve still got to visit the Ratata and even after that, our work will be far from over.” Deag said as he slipped into his shoes.

“Mmm… how’s Shiru doing?” Fìor asked as she sat up.

“Honestly, she’s doing great. She’s always watching and learning. She even acts when I find myself unable. With her by my side, I feel as though the weight of it all is reduced, even if by a little.”

“Aww and here I thought I was doing that just fine.” Fìor said with a pout as she got out of bed.

She then wrapped her small arms around Deag’s waist.

“Come on, we both know you help me out in many other ways.” He said with a grin but Fìor gave his chest a headbutt.

“Now I feel even more useless.” She groaned as Deag ran his hands through her short while hair.

“Haha! There, there. Hey, how about we go out after I return from return from the Western Wilds?”

“Tsk! Like you’ll have the time.” Fìor snapped but Deag lowered his arms and hugged her back.

“Just trust me, ok?”

Fìor looked up into Deag’s baggy eyes.

“I don’t regret you.” She sighed before kissing him lightly.

“Now get outa here!” She said after pinching his buttocks.

“Ouch!” Deag sounded melodramatically as he let Fìor go.

He then left the house before making his way to a certain building where Shib and his men had spent the knight.

They were brought out and Shib greeted Deag with a bashful nod.

Deag nodded back before leading everyone to the teleportation platforms where several large dark crates could be seen.

Each was about the size of half a house and stood on strange long legs.

Deag led Shib and his men to one of them and he promptly opened a panel on the crate’s side revealing a ton of frozen Nýchta.

“Nýchta. A Rendaro staple. There’s water in those ones and fish in that one.” Deag said and Shib struggled to hold his tears as he looked at the crates.

“H-“ He tried to say but Deag simply nodded prompting Shib to do the same.

Deag raised a brow at an approaching Shiru, who squinted her way towards the two men.

“Err- could I ask that you accompany the Sumarati back home? I’ll pay the Ratata a visit so that our work is a little more efficient.”

“Oh? Ok.” Shiru whimpered making Deag chuckle a little.

He then shot Shib a final weak smile before making his way to the war room only its entrance was blocked by several kneeling humans.

Deag rolled his eyes before weaving past the group.

He then walked up to Rix who keenly eyed one of the many maps on the table.

“I’m gonna need you to quickly accompany me to the Western Wilds.”

Rix nodded before teleporting the himself and Deag to a mound somewhere to far to the southwest.

Deag took a deep breath before looking out into the desert but before his eyes could take in any of the sandy landscape, the ground in front if him rumbled and a Haevrul leapt out from the ground.

The creature open its pincers to bite off Deag’s head but Rix promptly punched the side of its head and to Deag’s horror, the beast fell limply to the side.

He turned to the Dragon Knight and saw that he was as composed as ever.

Deag sighed before shaking his head.

“They’re in a valley not to far from here. Come on.” Deag said before leading his companion further south.

.

..

The two eventually arrived at the bottom of a rather narrow, yet deep valley.

They walked deeper into the valley which was brightly lit by the morning sunlight and they eventually arrived at a wide portion of the crevice where a tribal settlement could be seen on an elevated part of the valley’s floor to the west. The elevated platform looked around forty square kilometers big.

Deag almost jumped out of his own skin as Shiru and Raer suddenly appeared next to him.

“Shib sends his thanks. He said that he’ll make our alliance official after he treats us to supper.” She said with a yawn.

“Oh? Good.” Deag said before turning to face the village below.

Countless Rendaro could be seen walking the valley floor and it seems as though some of them noticed Deag and company because they all started running to the settlement all while other, more armed Rendaro approach.

Deag and Shiru stood completely still even as Spears and arrows were hurled towards them.

They uselessly bounced off a barrier of distorted space created by the Raer.

Shiru’s face twisted as the angered Rendaro grew ever closer.

She turned to a flat faced Rix.

“Please stop them without hurting them.” She pleaded.

The Draconic Knight nodded before walking forward as the aggravated Rendaro approached with various clubs and Spears in hand.

Rix raised his hand all while they yelled various things and in the next moment, all of the angry Rendaro were rendered immobile.

“Aargg! Let us go, monster!” The closest Rendaro yelled as Deag and Shiru walked up to Rix’s side.

“We just want to talk.” Shiru said but the Rendaro in front of her, a pale muscular man dressed in strips of leather barely covered anything, scowled in response.

“What do you want?” He spat.

“Could you go get your leader or chief?”

“Let go of my men first!”

“We’ll do that after you bring your leader here.” Shiru said.

The bound Rendaro let out a growl before turning his head to the side defiantly.

“Fine!” He said and Rix let him go.

He then ran down into the valley deep and eventually ascended onto the platform where he entered the settlement which was made up of huts of varying size and shape.

Shiru’s eyes widened a little upon seeing a few Rendaro exiting the largest hut with something large in hand.

They left the settlement and approached with their weapons raised.

Shiru sighed since they weren’t throwing any of them.

Her eyes then rose to look at the object some of them were carrying.

It looked like a wooden chair and sitting on top of it was a man and the closer he got, the more familiar her looked-

Shiru gasped as she realized that the man sitting on top of the throne was none other than Ndlo. Although he only had his right arm and wore the tattered remains of the shirt given to most prisoners in Site A.

The Rendaro stopped about ten meters away and Shiru locked gazes with Ndlo who looked far older than she remember.

The man who was once a member of the sixth squad, lowered his eyes but stopped for his head could fully fall.

“Hello, Ndlo.” Shiru greeted without expression.

“Ahem! What brings you here?” Ndlo asked without meeting Shiru’s gaze.

“We want to bring the Rendaro down here into the UEF. Are you their leader, by chance?” Deag asked.

“Err.. no. Toralla, introduce yourself.” Ndlo said prompting a middle aged man to step forward.

“What do you want?” Toralla harshly asked.

“We want to form an alliance with you. One which will enrich the lives of our people.”

“And what if we refuse?”

Deag’s eyes narrowed.

They then slowly turned to the settlement in the distance.

It looked like it was home to about ten thousand Rendaro at most.

Five thousand of whom were probably men.

Men who could join the Sable Army.

“We will accept your choice, but I’d much rather we worked together.” Deag said.

“But you still haven’t said what you want other than your suspicious alliance.” Toralla snapped.

Deag sighed.

“We want men. Soldiers to be exact. The flames of war yet burn and they threaten to leave none untouched. I want to build an army strong enough to end that war.”

Toralla looked up at Ndlo who rested his head on his sole hand.

“The decision is up to you, Toralla.”

“Then I’ll have to refuse. Go back from where you came from and deal with your own problems!”

Deag winced and turned a narrowed eye to Shiru who’s expression was one of conflict.

“We have to get stronger.” She muttered.

“But… but not at the cost of others.” Deag said making Shiru’s eyes widen a little. She eventually lowered her head, prompting Deag to face Toralla.

“I understand and respect your decision. Oh- how did you get here, if I may ask?” Deag asked while looking at Ndlo with narrowed eyes.

“I Err… woke up here, after the explosion in Site A.” He said with a fake cough.

“Oh? And why are these people carrying you around?”

“Umm-“

“Because he is a wise man who came to teach and heal!” Toralla yelled while flexing his rather muscular arms.

“Is that so? Well, I wish you luck with whatever this is.” Deag said with a smirk as he turned to leave.

“Wait!”

“Mmm?” Deag and Shiru sounded while glancing at a wide eyed Ndlo.

“Err… the Ratata Tatamata said that Anhai passed through here not too long ago. She’s supposedly headed somewhere far to the west. Just… I just wanted to let you know.”

“Is there nothing else you wanted to say?” Shiru asked with a weak smile.

“N-no.”

Shiru nodded before following Deag out of the valley.

Rix then teleported them all the way back to southern Coh where the two Regents let out deep sighs.

“It’s fine. We still have two more days until the Aureate King makes his decision.” Deag said.

Shiru gave him an understanding nod.

“Oh- I need to go check up on Neaj!” She said before scurrying away adorably.

Deag chuckled to himself before rubbing his hands with a suspicious grin.

He then made his way to Cohval as the sun soared across the sky.

He entered the base which was heavily reinforced by tall walls and a shield of distorted space high in the sky.

He made his way past countless recruits as they trained before eventually arriving at Fìor’s office where she could be seen working hard.

Choosing not to disturb her, Deag made his way to the office next to hers wherein a certain Ash Wraith sat.

“Good afternoon.”

Wolva raised his dark eyes and stared at Deag.

“Hey. What brings you here?” The Ash Wraith asked as he stood up. His white hair had bee cut short and it only added to his intensity.

“I’m actually here for my precious pumpkin but she’s busy so I thought I’d annoy you for a bit.” Deag said with a grin.

“Hoh? How brave of you.” Wolva said while leading Deag out of the office.

The two then made their way to a tower in the center of Cohval and after being greeted by the two men stationed there, Wolva temporarily dismissed them before looking out in the base.

“Where do you think he is right now?” Wolva asked. His voice a cold wheeze.

“No idea, but I know for certain he’s alive and still walking ever northward.”

“Mmm.” Wolva sounded in agreement.

“What will we do when the gods decide to clash? What will we do when they ultimately fall?” Wolva wondered aloud.

“Ah well, my ramblings aside, how are things going in the Western Wilds?”

Deag summarized everything that had happened.

“I see. Well, the more hands the better. I know without a doubt that Caligo learnt a lot from the Kindling War. We’ll need to be one step ahead and the Sable Army may be the key to it-“

Wolva stopped as someone gently placed their hands over Deag's eyes.

“Hey.” Fìor greeted.

“Hey. I hope you’re done because I prepared something quite special for ya.”

“Oh? Can Wolva come?” Fìor giggled.

“No. He’d only spoil the mood.”

“I’m standing right here, you know.” Wolva groaned.

“Yeah, yeah.” Deag said before turning around to face a smiling Fìor.

“Take me away, wild boy.” She said while dramatically falling into his arms.

“Ugh.” Wolva groaned before leaving the tower.

“Haha! Come on.” Deag said before having his Kommáti teleport him and Fìor to the sandy beaches off Rendaya.

Sitting bellow them was a blanket which Deag and Fìor sat on.

Fìor then gasped as the air suddenly grew silent.

She looked around and saw that the sad around them was slightly distorted.

Her gaze then fell onto Deag, who suddenly held a wooden box in his hands.

He placed it on the blanket and opened it revealing four items: a long bottle, a small box and two glasses.

Deag handed her one of them before pouring some of the bottle’s contents into the cup.

He poured some for himself and gestured that she drink.

“Mmm…” Fìor softly sounded.

“Foph made. Quite plain, in my opinion but it gets the job done. The new refrigeration techniques really elevate the experience.” Fìor said as Deag opened the smaller box, revealing two perfectly rectangular pieces of cake.

He handed her a slice and watched delightedly as she took a single bite.

His face then twisted with horror as she shoved the rest of the piece into her mouth.

“Oh, dlats sho ghood!”

“Swallow your food before you speak, dammit!” Deag cried but this only made Fìor giggle.

Deag sighed before looking out into the darkness of the ocean as the sun set.

The dark blue of the water seamlessly transitioned into the darkness of the sky and the further one looked, the more stars one saw.

“Th Ash Wraiths sure know how to bake, huh?” Fìor asked as she drank the blood red wine.

“I- I was the one who baked that.” Deag said making Fìor gasp.

“Oh… don’t tell me you also-“ Fìor muttered while glancing at the bottle.

“I spent quite a bit of my spare time in the Oasis and in Jivu. Laïn and Nira taught me quite a few things-“

Deag stopped upon seeing that tears were falling from Fìor’s eyes.

“Wait, what’s wrong?” He asked while moving closer to her.

“You did all this for me?” She asked with trembling lips.

“Yeah, but don’t worry about it. I’m a fast learner, it didn’t take too-“

Deag stopped yet again as Fìor crashed into his arms where she began crying in earnest.

Deag simply held her tightly while trying to figure out if he had done something wrong.

.

..

Fìor tears eventually dried and she slowly stood up.

“Lets go home.” She said with a rather stiff expression.

“O-ok.”

The two packed everything up before making their way home, but instead of heading straight to the bedroom, Fìor led Deag into the bathroom where they promptly showered.

They then crawled into bed where Fìor refused to meet Deag's gaze.

He opened his mouth to say something but stopped as she weakly held his hands.

“I’m sorry.” She said.

“I’m sorry for ruining everything.”

Deag signed before pulling her closer.

“Don’t worry. I’m just happy enough being able to spend time with you.”

Fìor nodded before looking up into Deag’s eyes.

She then lightly kissed him.

“I was just so overwhelmed I… I didn’t know what to do… or say.” She added only for Deag to kiss her back.

“I panicked.”

Deag kissed her again.

“You’re not upset, right?” She asked only for Deag to kiss her again.

“Wait!” Fìor cried after managing to rip herself from his embrace.

She kissed him back before resting her head on his chest.

“There. Now we’re even, right?” She asked while listening to Deag’s racing heart.

A moment passed and Deag remained silent.

“Well?” She asked while raising her head to meet Deag’s gaze.

“Say something.” She said only to gasp as Deag firmly wrapped his left arm around her.

“At least say something before you- Ah!” Fìor cried as Deag silently hugged her tightly.

“Deag- Ah! Say… something!” She cried while Deag gave her a bear hug.

She then raised her head and kissed Deag before lightly biting his lips.

“Ouch!”

“That’s what you get for ignoring me!” Fìor yelled only for Deag to grab her shoulders and push her away.

He then glared at her and winced a little upon seeing that fresh tears were falling from her eyes.

“I love you. This silly woman loves you and hopes you’ll forgive her for overreacting.” She whispered.

Deag scoffed before kissing her for the last time.

“Dammit- Ah! Why must you be so stubborn!” Fìor sighed.

“Sorry… for overreacting.” He said with a grin.

Fìor messily kissed him before dropping her head weakly.

“Asshole.”
