Bathed In Gold Pt. 19

Nothing was said as Caligo helped his father onto the throne.

Gathered by the throne were countless healers who poured life energy into the king.

Caligo simply stood next to his father, who’s eyes shifted from point to point as though he was searching for something.

Sidus walked up to me and lightly tapped my shoulder.

He then gestured that I follow him to a distant pillar near the hall's entrance.

“Umm… did something happen to the prince while you were away?” He asked. His face stiff.

I shook my head and Sidus sighed in response.

“Why do you ask?” I asked.

“Not sure yet, but I have a bad feeling about this.”

“Shouldn’t we be celebrating the kings return?” I asked.

“We should but it doesn’t seem as though he returned willingly. That, plus the fact that we learnt many centuries ago that the barrier that once hid his majesty’s chambers was so strong that only a host could break it and he is the sole host of space. I… I can’t help but worry.” Sidus said with a frown, but I offered him my hand.

“I’m sure everything will be fine especially with his majesty at the Helma.”

Sidus’s eyes widened.

He curtly nodded before taking my hand and accompanying me back go the throne where everyone knelt as Luno looked all over us over.

“This place reeks of death.” The King wheezed.

“Thou sayth she is still in the Cradle, then why do mine bones tremble, Gregar?” He asked while glaring at one of the Yilon knights.

Gregar stood up and deeply bowed.

“I assure you, your highness, she is not here. Also, Pardon my rudeness, but it seems as though you no longer posses hostship over the domain of space.”

Everyone let out gasps before instantly falling silent as we all noticed that Caligo was glowing rather brightly.

“Tis true. That is exactly why I am deciding to act cautiously. Where is the new host? Are they on Edenton?” The King asked.

“Yes. Actually, they are on the continent-“

“TAKE ME TO THEIR LOCATION NOW!” Caligo demanded while walking towards the knight who stood his ground as Caligo glared at him.

“Your highness?” Gregar asked while looking past Caligo to look at the King, who rested his head on his thin arms.

“Mine perpetuity is no longer guaranteed… go, Caligo. Snuff out that which would so abruptly rob me of all that I worked for.”

Caligo nodded before returning his burning eyes to the knight.

“Follow me.” Gregar said and like that, he, Caligo and the Helma were gone.

A moment passed and we all turned to find several people entering the hall.

Three of whom were familiar to me.

Leading the group was Grandmaster Ferrum, walking behind him were the two High Priests, Deag and Ranak. Walking alongside them was a small, middle aged woman who I didn’t quite recognize-

My eyes widened upon realizing that it was high Priestess Kulea.

I recognized her by the Golden Horns on her head. She was far smaller than before and no longer had any golden lines on her face.

She and the three others walked past we, who knelt before the king before joining us in kneeling.

“Ah… thou perseveres still, Ferrum.” The King said.

“Indeed, your highness. Words cannot describe the joy I felt upon hearing that you had returned to us.” Ferrum said, his head low.

“Raise thine head, old friend. Or hast thou sinned to the extent that thou can no longer face me.” The King said with a weak smile.

Ferrum raised his head and looked at the King with trembling eyes.

“Tell me, what happened after I sealed mine thwarted self?”

“W-well, firstly, we concluded the Hunt For Death in the kingdom. I hope you don’t mind, but we have a few Death magicians in our ranks.”

“Mmm… tis fine, I suppose. What then?” The King asked as several servants approached with trays of food.

The King sent away everyone but the man who held up a tray with various cheeses, fruits and eggs on it.

“We then experienced two hundred and fifty years of peace and prosperity-“

“Two hundred, thou sayth?” The King asked as he cracked a single boiled egg.

“Yes. That is until another collision occurred.”

The King’s eyes narrowed as he took a bite out of the egg.

“Two of the four worlds which interacted were destroyed and large amounts of their inhabitants were transferred here. These were the Dragons and the Rendaro, although a few humans arrived from our home world as well. We engaged with communications with the dragons and the Rendaro and the Rendaro agreed to work alongside us, although, as you instructed, we hid all knowledge of the past. Things, however, did not go as smoothly when we asked that the dragons share the world with us. They made unreasonable demands and we punished them for not knowing their place-“

“What did they demand?” The King asked while grabbing a grip of fresh golden-yellow grapes.

“Eight percent of all land on Edenton.”

“Haha! Did they really? Please continue.”

“Yes, unfortunately this led to a war. One which would last about a hundred years. We eventually emerged vivacious but the prince was gravely wounded in his battle against the Dragon royal family-“

“How come?”

“Because the dragon prince was the host of heat and he would have incinerated the continent were it not for the valiant efforts of our prince.”

The King nodded before suddenly gasping.

“Are you alright, your majesty?” Ferrum asked as everyone prepared themselves to help him.

The King raised his empty hand and we all watched keenly as he inspected it.

He then let out a few coughs before lowering it.

“Mmm… it would seem as though that which was once mine has returned, although it now rests with mine bosom wounded and afraid along with its proprietor.” He said before sighing.

“Ah, well. It seems as though the very gods themselves are prone to err. Go on, Ferrum.” The King said with eyes that shone brilliantly white.

“Err… yes. The battle left the prince bedridden and he slept for nearly four hundred years.”

“What happened in between that time?”

Ferrum lowered his head.

“Many things. Half of the Yilon legion turned traitor leading to the Moonless War were the traitorous dogs tried taking the Lunar Seat for themselves.” Ferrum said with a rather saddened voice.

I turned my eyes towards the King who’s eyes were still focused on Ferrum as he ate his grapes but since I was the only one raising their head, he glanced at me prompting me to lower my head.

“The seat was empty when I emerged, so I assume that the traitors were aptly dealt with.”

“Well, we defeated many of their subordinates but as for the three traitorous knights, they managed to escape our pursuit.”

Silence filled the hall.

“Mmm… didst thou make any attempts to find them? Or didst thou sit on thine hands while three threats to mine kingdom and son walked the world?”

“We sent out many search parties, but they… always returned empty handed.”

“I see… what happened after thine defeat in this… Moonless War?” The King asked as he shooed away the servant with the wave of his hand.

“We rebuilt and shifted our efforts to ensuring that faith in Summus never wavered- oh, I forgot to mention, but a faith known as Summusism was born shortly after the second collision. It was made by a man who witnessed your son’s mighty power. He believed that he had received it from some supreme being.“

“He did, although I would not consider myself a Supreme being. I am merely learned.” The King said with a smirk.

Ferrum smiled awkwardly in response before sighing.

“Sigh not, old friend. Faith is a… binding agent and I can see how it would be beneficial in any society. Is that all?”

“Not quite. Shortly before the prince fell asleep, he declared that all of the continent fall beneath the banners of the sun and moon. Unfortunately, we could never finish the conquest due to… myriad other reasons.”

“So, what state does mine kingdom find itself in as we speak?” The King asked.

“We were recently engaged in a war with the mud crawlers- Rendaro. A war which cost us heavily. On top of that, relations between the three states is… tense, to say the least. Not to mention our bandit problem.” Ferrum said and it this point, his arms hung and his head was low.

“Were we not once allied with the Rendaro?”

“We were, but the prince decided it would be best if we made it clear to both the dragons and Rendaro that we, humans were this world’s rulers.”

“Did he really say that?” The King asked with an amused smile.

“Not exactly. He said that it’s what you would have wanted.”

The smile instantly disappeared from the King’s face.

“Mmm…”

A loud explosion then suddenly came from behind us and we all turned to find the Helma standing next to a ball of light which burnt so brightly, everyone had to shield their eyes at the fear of going blind.

The light slowly faded and we looked to find a naked Caligo walking towards his father with a twisted scowl on his face.

Two servants ran up to him and they gave him a gown which he promptly slipped into.

Caligo then knelt in front of his father.

“Has hostship returned to thee, father?”

“It has, albeit lame. But- can I ask thee a question, son?”

“Of course!” Caligo asked while looking up at the King, who stared at him coldly.

“When, in our eternity, did I ever teach thee arrogance?” The King spat.

“W-what?” Caligo whimpered.

“How many wars didst thee wage in my absence? How many lives were lost beneath thine gaze and how much pain didst thee experience in mine name?” The King asked and it felt as though the air was getting heavier by the second.

Caligo lowered his head, but the King suddenly appeared in front of Caligo, only he was floating a few centimeters above the ground.

“Come here, foolish boy.” The King said before wrapping his small hands around his son.

“Didst thee learn nothing from mine defeat?” He asked but Caligo remained silent.

The Moon King then sighed before turning his attention towards Ferrum.

“Thee described the kingdom as being fractured. So I will give thee, both of thee, ten years to rebuild.” The King said before instantly returning to the throne.

His eyes then shifted to Kulea, but they moved passed her rather quickly.

“Leave. All of thee. And return only with good news.”

Everyone, including me stood to leave, but Caligo remained on his knee.

“Go, son. It would be irresponsible of me to overlook half a millennia of failure.”

“But father… it has been so long.” Caligo said, his voice weak.

I eventually grew too distant to hear what was being said and so I walked up to Sidus, who accompanied me to the exit.

We then left the hall and I glanced at Sidus to find that he was making quite the pained expression.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, snapping him out of his trancelike state.

“Oh- it’s just… I’ve never seen Caligo that angry.” He said as we walked down the corridor along with everyone else.

We eventually reached a chamber with countless teleportation platforms.

Sidus took me to one and instructed the operator to take me to the prince’s palace.

“We’ll probably be there soon.” He said before the space around me shifted.

My eyes widened upon seeing countless Hands standing in front of the platform.

Standing in front of them was Lham and he looked at me with panicked eyes.

“Is it true?” He asked.

“Has the Moon King finally returned?”

I slowly nodded and for some reason, it seemed as though no one knew how to respond.
