Turning around I said, "Names." In a somewhat depressed voice.
"We have none." They said.
"Of course, you don't. Okay, you," Pointing to the male, "are Marodon. And you are.... uuummmm, we'll go Vivian. Okay Marodon organise the," quick appraisal, "Base Demons, come up with better name me, into 3 groups those who want to be warriors, those who want to be life-shapers and those who don't want to be either. Send the life-shapers to Vivian and the unknowns to me." He started shouting, teach him how to voice project. Time for some more planning. The warriors Marodon will train same with Vivian and the life-shapers, the unknowns will be used as various labour and that should take care of it.
40 minutes later...
Okay about 100 warriors, a bit over 50 life-shapers and a bit less than 150 unknowns.
"Marodon, train the warrior candidates for a couple days then send them out in teams of 5, if your gonna do team related stuff, then have a sixth non-combatant. Vivian, train the life-shaper candidates, we need them all, also this order stands for all, if you find any wildlife, it is to be capture unless it possess a severe risk of injury to you."
Quickly I was left with the unknown's, I know from memory this was one of the places that had a lot of iron and some other useful metals, gold not one of them.
Preparing my voice, I finally said so all the unknowns could hear me, "Get into teams of 4 any leftover I'll decide what to do with you." It took a bit for them to get into teams, most getting with whoever was nearest to themselves, in a spacial manner not the human way, like white people with white people or people with blue eyes with people with blue eyes. anyway had 3 left over 2 females 1 male, didn't take much not of them after that but I made them the overlords of the unknowns.
"Ok, all of pick a number 1, 2 or 3. Got it? Ok 1's over there, 2's there and 3's there." Pointing to my left towards the ocean, then in front of me and finally to my right. I had roughly equal numbers considering I only had 35 groups.
"1's, you'll be gathering food as in berries and the like, any animals you find are to be captured if possible. 2's you'll be taking down these tree's, " I said gesturing towards the trees behind me, there were relieved faces from the 1's and 3's, some of the warriors and life-shapers along the beach were laughing at the 2's, gotta punish them later. Continuing, " 3's you'll be digging a lot of holes further inland, in the dirt, do it right and we'll be sleeping in there, don't and you'll be sleeping neck deep in fairly cold water." After that I got my overlords to pick which group to follow and order around.
I spent the rest of the day, teaching a couple 2's how to dig up some of the younger tree's and to get a bit of wood, I taught the other 2's the use of simple tools to assist in cutting down the trees. The 3's I couldn't do much and the 1's were gone until dusk, so I got the warrior candidates to try and lift some of the larger trees out of the ground in teams of 5. Obviously, no one succeeded but it taught them, don't look down upon anyone under my care and also how to lift. Maybe improved their strength a bit.
The 3's only had a few holes done, what'd I do with the excavated soil you may ask. I got them to pile it up and make some fairly large earthen walls along the beach, can't really call them earthen as we're not on Earth. Anyway, the earthen walls were for a later use but I had those teams sleep in the holes they dug and shore up any potentially weaknesses in the design. I slept in one of the team’s hole's, wasn't the most comfortable but it was tolerable. Had a few fires going in the night the holes, I think I'll call 'em burrows, retained heat well but nearly smoked some stupid teams out.
I spent another week doing this before Samuel decided to show.
As you've set-up a decent camp that has become more permanent, you have the option to establish your military staging ground here. You can have as many as you want.
Accept?
"I accept." I said with no hesitation and was then met with this.
You are now the Overlord of the Coastal Demons, the only Demons currently. By being an Overlord of a unique race, you've unlocked a variety of bonuses.
All Demons no matter what origin or background, will automatically listen to you but can still disobey you.
For ever Demon born under your control you gain 2 Army Points or AP. AP can be spent in AP Store for various Army System related goods.
2 evolutions for those under your command
A grimoire on pole arms
A grimoire on survival that constantly updates (Survival in every kind of place, also you really shouldn't get this, it's too OP)
A full Overlord armour and weapon set
500 units of food
3 buildings
Building rewards simply allow you to spawn in a building that you'll be able to upgrade using mana, qi, chi or physical materials or another building upgrade.
Probably should check my status. It'll be right. After few seconds of thought I decided to evolve Vivian and Marodon, give the pole arms grimoire to Marodon along with the survival grimoire, use one building for a storage hut that I placed 10-20m into the tree line, another on a lumber mill and placed it near to the storage hut, I don't know how well that'll work and used the final for a shipyard that'll serve as a dock for a while.
Now when all those changes came in a fair few were surprised but I quickly calmed them down, the 3's also got more teams with them. My armour set was, surprisingly advanced. It was big, made to make whoever wears it to look bigger and more intimidating, no shield though but 4 swords. The helmet looked as if it were made to fit me perfectly, so bonus also had a pair of horns sticking out not very big though. The chest piece was pretty thick from my point of view but had a thin layer of some sort of foam and maybe some small bits of metal on it for a small bit of protection. The upper arm pieces left my, I'll call them elbows, exposed and the bottom arms had no armour on at the shoulder so it was kinda pointless. The forearm pieces covered my forearms up to the wrist and looked solid enough my hands had no armour though. My legs would be fairly well protected but, my speed would be hindered a bit. The shoes didn't exist. The 4 swords were about 1.5-1.6m long with a small circular guard, single edge with a sharp tip.
I tried to don the armour, emphasis tried, but it was too heavy for me to lift and put on. So, in confusion I checked my status.

The Mortal God's Barrier: A barrier skill used by The Mortal God himself, it blocks any attack coming from a being below the level of God but can only block so much damage. Higher levels increase the amount of damage blocked and eventually can stop 1 attack from a God. (Mildly incorrect info)

Yeah. Sentients in the pre-sentient era. Logic has abandoned us.

"Samuel... I think what you've done is illegal."
No, perfectly legal.
"I'll take them all." I said already rearranging my short-sighted plans to factor in these new additions.
Cannot afford slave 1 and 2, do you accept the terms of slave 3?
SHIT. Unfortunate. Sighing, I said, "Yes. Also, can I take out a loan and pay you back?" Please say yes.
Affirmative. Transporting Slaves and people to your location.
SUCCESS! Wait hang on a minute. "Samuel, I demand to speak to the insane bastard who put me and my friends here."
Suddenly the world turned white, a familiar colour by now. In front of me was someone who looked like me only a bit taller and mature and without any acne. The Mortal God. He had a neutral expression and was looking me directly in the eyes. He then started to pace around breaking eye contact, giving me the feeling of an evil villain’s monologue.
"It seems that the mind-altering effects have worn off, Mister Powers." I saw that one coming.
"Ok, I'll stop now. So, here's the simple explanation as to why you killed a lot of people and didn't really care that much. I fucked with your head by putting a little bit of me into you. It made you less morale and ethical, whilst also making you less likely to question what was happening. In other words, more accepting and adaptable." He continued to pace around, and my paranoia is gaining ground. Taking a deep breath, he continued to speak, "There were a few reasons for that, most important being, seeing how far I've strayed from my initial intentions. The answer is, pretty far. The reason I don't send you back or fix everything is... I'm dead." With that bombshell, he turned to face me and considered my eyes, giving me a feeling of dead seriousness. Continuing with that, "Yet, I'm not in Hell, not bullshit Christian, Jewish or Islamic Hell, but the afterlife Hell, because of that fact, I'm only the SECOND most powerful being in existence, most powerful God, but not the most powerful being. I can't kill the cunt who killed me, as I can't access Divine Magic and he and I know each other so well that we can't gain the upper hand in a fight. I also expect a second war of the Gods to happen soon. As such, I may die and I've done a lot in my life, I've been a God for nearly as long as the born Gods have. Only 2000 or so years off. Because of those reasons, I need a successor, someone who is similar enough to myself that I can rest easy, and ideally, someone who can enjoy what I've done in my long life."
Picking up from where he's left off, I said in 'I see' voice, "That's where I come into play."
"Exactly. But of course, gotta have some fun first. So, this world you’re on, is obviously, one of many in this galaxy and by extension universe. Here's the fun part. This universe is a server for a game I made many eons ago. One of 50 actually, all for the same game, this server you’re in is the server for the most active of players, only 5 hours max a day is not spent playing which means everything is much more difficult and realistic, so real that it is real." Now, he's piqued my interest. "So, my plan is to have you be an NPC, and fuck shit up. You eventual become a God, fight in the second war and if necessary, replace me."
".... How am I to say no to that?" Seriously, how can I?
"You don't. Anyway, here's how you reach Godhood, the quick way. Kill a lot of things of greater and greater power and then absorb that power and make it your own. Now when you become a God, you'll already be a God of mortals and demons, so go for something fun, like war or battle, space or time. How do I do that? Simply, focus on those aspects of their power and your own. Hopefully I'll also gain those domains. Don't ask for the long way. Now when I send you off, that'll be to train you in a variety of areas and give you an idea on how to raise and manage an empire. Please name it the 'Demon Empire' that way I'll get more power. And if I get more power you get more power." My paranoia is creeping back in, mostly because I'm agreeing to what he wants me to do but I don't really have a choice.
"So, name everything Demon, and get a power boost, is that the way this works? Cause if so, that's fairly easy." My tone was very questioning, kinda has to be but everything was setting off my paranoia today.
"Pretty much. Now, who do you need to watch out for? Ah, yes, ok, here we go. There are three beings you're going to need to watch out for, from least worse to get me: That-guy-whose-vocals-cords-I-tore-out-so-he-can-only-roar-and-growl-because-he-was-a-squeaker, my-our-your Grandson and finally, The God of Cowards. My-our-your Grandson is a fucking psychopath that wears armour with the same colour scheme as my armour, kill him as soon as you see him. The rebel, just bully him about 'for humanity', also, unless you destroy his soul, he'll keep coming back. The God of Cowards, he's the one cunt who can kill me, so contact me and if you do manage to kill him. Let's just say the Second war won't be a war." I'd have thought that with that ominous tone he'd have left but he's still here, or rather, I'm still here.
"Uh, anything else?" I asked after 30 seconds of silence.
"Nothing that needs to be said now. Later. Well, good bye." And with that I was back where I'd been but a few minutes ago.
Granting rewards for quest: WAKE UP
10 Stat points
40 DP
2 Skill points
Refined body
30 Biomass points
2 Evolution points
".... Samuel, when did I accept this quest? Also, what are biomass points and evolution points and skill points?" Still don't quite trust Samuel, but gotta use what you got. I think refined body is neatening up my body, kinda want that.
The quest is giving to all who get sent here as an NPC. Generally, they don't wake up ever. Biomass is used to upgrade your body, add organs, etc. Evolution points are used when your evolving or beforehand for greater effect. Evolution occurs every 100 levels, you get 1 evolution per level. Skill points are used to buy or upgrade skills and traits.
"Ok, fuck around with that later. Assign 4 stat points to strength, 1 to endurance and 1 to perception." Gotta keep some in reserve as per usual. Now, where are my... There they are.
"Whoever is David Gold, go over to Marodon, the tall horned guy. Help him with training the warrior candidates. Grimly get some of the 3's to set up shop. Slave 1 and 3, patrol around the camp, food will be available in a few hours. Elizabeth, take some of Maradon's best students out to capture wild life, alive. Slave 2, you’re with me." David Gold, was a fat human. Messy hair and just reminded me of a corrupt official. Grimly was a dwarf, beard and red hair, plate armour and a fucking war hammer. Slave 1, I'm calling him Dovahkiin, was almost naked only had a loin cloth, a shit tonne of muscles and scars all over. Slave 3 was fairly similar to Dragon-born, he just had decent clothes, now I really want to deal with those guys. Elizabeth was a short woman in 'noble' attire, black hair and dark skin. I'm worried that she may be a bitch to myself or my subordinates. Slave 2 was a Cat-girl. Can't say it any other way. I'd say she's average height and is very malnourished, blue hair not gonna question that.
"Who are you?" That was David, really giving me the corrupt official vibe.
"Aye lad, who be you?" Obviously Grimly in true Dwavish fashion. Like the guy already.
"Yes, master." That was all three of the slaves.
"I am Elizabeth Smith, and I demand to speak to the contractor not some, savage!" Tempted to kill her. Very tempted.
"I am Heath, I am the contractor and under the contract you will do what I say as long as it does not go against the contract. Any arguments?" I really didn't like Elizabeth, maybe she'll warm up to me later.
"Okay lad, who am I grabbing?" Grimly, your voice is soothing.
"The 3's, the guys digging holes, grab a team and get them to build a workshop to your specifications. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of material for you to work with." With that he walked over into the woods and presumably, stole a team.
"David, big-horned guy, now." I stated, interrupting any questions he was going to ask. Probably should make sure Marodon knows this guy is below him.
"Now then, Elizabeth go grab a team of warriors and get me some animals." I said in a... aggravated tone.
"How do you propose I do that?" She asked in an obnoxious voice.
"Freeze them or encase them in ice and slide them back here. Pretty simple." How fucking stupid is she?
"Magic doesn't work like that. I can lower the temperature of something but cannot freeze it, that's high-level arch-mages." I see.
"I see. Well, it does work like that, you remove a lot of heat from the surrounding area to solidify water into ice thus encasing the creature in ice and restricting their movement." How stupid do you have to be?
".... That... might work?" Ok, I think the arrogance was just a mask.
"Do I need to explain to you, how the universe works?" I probably do.
"What can you teach me?" Never mind it's back.
"Everything is made up of tiny things called atoms, the colder something is the slower they move and the hotter something is the faster they move. So, reduce the energy or heat in water to make it ice." I wonder will she now treat me unrealistically as a master or what?
".... I.... See. Then I shall be off." That's more realistic. Then she walked off in the direction of Marodon.
Finally, the part I was after. Turning to my right to face Slave 2, I said, "You’re a necromancer, correct?" She nodded to that. Continuing, "I'd prefer it if you spoke, unless your vocal cords have been removed in which case, how much DP will it cost to replace them." I don't think she'll speak, at least not for a, "Yes, master." Never mind. Well her voice wasn't scratchy from disuse or anything like that, actual quite pleasant.
"Cool, now then I need you to teach me necromancy. At least the ability to use magic." Anyone could've seen that coming.
"... Necromancy is illegal in the Kingdom." She stated bluntly. Doesn't understand the situation, also how do I understand her language? I imagine she'd have a different language than I do.
"Fortunately, we're not in this kingdom you speak of. So, teach me necromancy. Unless it'll limit my magical options in the future." I hope it doesn't.
"Yes master. Necromancy is the art of raising the dead or converting the living into the undead. They have a variety of uses and types. To start you learn how to channel and manipulate mana." Before she could continue, I interrupted her. Seemed disappointed at that, maybe even a little fearful most likely due to what happened in my conversation with the Ice mage.
"Ok, can I channel mana into my body to improve it or similar, also can we move into the shade away from the sun? Like right over there." I said pointing to a decent sized tree 30m away to the left.
"Of course, sorry master." If we go by the stereotypes, she's probably been a slave for a short while. That or the stereotypes are wrong but whatever.
So, under the tree for several hours learning magic and channelling it we were, before Vivian and Marodon came over to confirm some stuff.
"Heath, we have trained our groups to the best of our abilities. We were wondering, what do we do now?" Asked Vivian, also a very pleasant voice.
"Yes, I forgot to give these to you. A Grimoire on polearms for you Marodon. Sorry Vivian I didn't get a choice in these but for both of you I got an evolution thing. I give that to both of you. Enjoy." Vivian and Marodon proceeded to pass out and start convulsing on the sandy ground. Quickly calling over several warrior candidates, we managed to get them in bed and looked after by some life-shaper candidates. All the while Slave 2 was following me.
"I apologize for that Lillithia." Yeah, I've learnt very little about her besides her name in those hours. She was banished from her clan which is why she doesn’t have a last name.
"No, master. Can we continue with your magic education?" In those few hours, I've observed that she likes teaching. I wonder why.
I spent another few hours learning and practicing mana manipulation before everyone returned to base, due to the lack of a burning ball of gas in the sky. Elizabeth and the team she stole returned with 37 animals, small and nearly dead from the cold but alive. I spoke to a few of the warrior candidates that were on guard and their observations confirmed my suspicions that Dave is a corrupt official, 7 attempts of bribery nothing serious. They got weird vibes from Dovahkiin and the Orc I've decided to call Jon until I get a name from him. Marodon and Vivian were still under. All-in-all, it was going pretty well.
Mate, this is TDG. Your two commanders currently under-going the evolution process are kinda going to die without sufficient biomass a.k.a food. I've lifted the restrictions off with how you get it in them but you still gotta get the food and put it on them.
".... How much do I need.”? I asked after I understood the implications of what was in front of me.
5000 each, equates to about 1 tonne of food each.
"I CAN'T GET THAT!" BULLSHIT!
Your gonna have to. I wish you luck.
"FUCKING CUNT, YOU FIX THIS!!" Bastard put me here he can at least fix this problem. Also, my people were looking at me weirdly, no time to rectify that.
"Get me a lot of food NOW! And bring it to Marodon and Vivian." After I ensured they were moving off to get food I went down into the burrow that was housing them.
The burrow was the largest 15 meters by 15 meters by 4 meters. A fair few bedrolls bought using DP, lined the walls along with two beds, upon which rested Marodon and Vivian. There peaceful, sleeping forms brought me some comfort, until the delivery guys arrived. It wasn't much, maybe 2kg all together. Nowhere near enough.
"How long do they have?" I asked hoping for weeks if not days.
2 days and counting.
SHIT! Marching outside under the moonlight, I shouted incredibly loudly, "ALL WARRIOR CANDIDATES, MAKE SOME HUNTING PARTIES AND SEND THEM OUT. FOR THE NEXT 2 DAYS AND NIGHTS, UNTIL EITHER BOTH VIVIAN AND MARODON HAVE GOTTEN THE REQUIRED BIOMASS OR THEIR DEAD!!!!" I just noticed that I can shout for as long as I like which means, when I'm pissed as I am now, I just keep going until I've said all I want. Marching back in, in a calmer manner, I set to watching over my two commanders. Now that I'm in a much calmer state of mind, I'll appraise them.
Name: Marodon
Level: 1
HP: 25/25
Race: Demon Warrior 1
Class: General (By default)
Class: Warrior
Highest Stat: STR
Lowest Stat: CHR
Name: Vivian
Level: 1
Hp: 15/15
Race: Demon Life-shaper 1
Class: Logistics Officer (By default)
Class: Beast-tamer
Highest Stat: CHAR
Lowest Stat: STR
So, my draw from that is, Vivian is being weakened by having the LOGO class, she should also be deployed with the warriors to capture wildlife. Marodon needs to have soldiers under his command and I need to level up appraisal.
2 Hours before Marodon's and Vivian's death....
I've called off the hunting parties, instead I've sent them out to capture wildlife and bring me plants. My slaves are managing the place and Grimly is forging what he can with the materials I bought with DP. I'm currently wearing my armour and well, I'm already getting sentimental. The white blankets that cover their bodies, look evil and menacing to my eyes. Their pillows, assassins waiting for the right moment, their every breathe and exhale, seem to be their last. I realise now, I'm kinda fucked if they kick the bucket. I gave Marodon a grimoire on pole arms so that the Warriors will already be able to use spears and such somewhat proficiently, without that we've got to puzzle that out on our own. Sure, I could use DP for manuals, but nothing teaches quite like a grimoire can and Dave, probably just can't teach them at all. The earthen walls and ceiling of the burrow seem ominous to me. In a final fit of desperation, I tried to manipulate mana into biomass on them for the umpteenth time. Unlike previous times, I felt something responding to my wishes, it felt like mana but at the same time completely different. Mana feels like a heavy water whereas this felt like a gas, easy to move but I moved very little of it. I tried to consolidate it into a more solid shape and, contrary to my expectations, it became a solid with but a thought and then in the stupidest moment of my life, I imagined biomass as a concept and pushed it into the now solid whatever-it-is. It changed to be what I thought was biomass. Then, in my infinite wisdom, I pushed it into Marodon and Vivian. The results of which shocked me out of that state of mind, fortunately the magic was already done.
Marodon and Vivian were fine and had evolved massively.
