20 : The More You Know

(Lave POV)

Holding the paper that Amice handed me, I looked blankly at a slightly demonic take on my face. “Look Lave. Aren't you cute in this picture.”

I really do wonder what is going through this girls head. “... They gave me horns...”

“It says here that you are a leader of the Demon spies that have came to this country in order to kill Humans.” Gran helpfully explained.

“But I don't want to be involved...” I whispered accusingly at the paper.

“Involved in what?” Asked Amice somehow braking out of her fantasy world.

“Nothing.” I sighed. Really this couldn't be any more annoying. You know what, I refuse this fate. You will not drag me into this problem. I will go home back to my quite life as a mercenary.

“But you know, I wonder what this whole Demon thing is about?” Amice asked while we walked down the road. “I mean its been hundreds of years since the last time anyone has seen one. And that was before the Imperious Church existed.”

“There used to be Demons?” Asked Gran.

“Yeah. Apparently there used to be far more monsters as well. However they where mostly wiped out when the Demon Lord was killed.” Amice shrugged dismissively. “I'm surprised you haven't heard it.”

“... I just never got the chance.” Gran said.

“Hm, well its not that interesting. Supposedly there was another race called Demons. We lived alongside each other for years. However one day a Demon decided that both races couldn't exist at the same time. They rose an army and attacked us. As towns after town fell, a Hero rose to help the us Humans. He fought against the Demon army. Finally after four years he killed the Demon Lord. With out the Demon Lord the Demons where weak. We killed them all, and no one has seen them since.” Amice concluded with a smile.

“Though I suppose some could have escaped, but by now there is no way there is enough to build an army.” Gran looked to be deep in thought.

After leaving the mountain range Amice had visible relaxed. Before we had to travel through the forest next to the road so that we wouldn't be seen. However currently we are leisurely walking down a dirt road that seems to be well traveled. In fact Amice appears to be a little to used to running.

“... Amice, why are you so calm even though we are wanted by the church?” I asked cautiously. Even though we have been traveling together it has only been nine days, and only the last four days have I been able to understand her.

“Well of corse I'm calm. Its not like this is the first time I've had to run from somewhere. Also I am not wanted by the Church, you are. But worry not. Even if the entire world wanted you dead I would still follow you to the ends of Terra.” Amice's eyes shined. “No matter what happens I will be there. Making sure not a single scratch falls upon your flawless skin. Which shimmers in this harsh summer sun. So perfect...”

I violently hurled a knife at Amice while shaking. I am afraid that if I let my guard down she will pounce me. Honestly it would be easier if she was trying to kill me. At least then I would know what to do. As it is I'm lost on how to handle her.

Amice smoothly dodged the knife with a large smile. “Ah, you are so shy.” She cooed. Pulling the knife back with a shudder I kept the wires wrapped around my fingers just in case.

“What did these Demons look like?” Asked Gran who had apparently decided to ignore the entire situation.

“From what Dad told me they look very similar to us. The only difference was that they spoke a different language and had very intricate tattoos.” Amice pondered. “However if you ask someone from the Church they will tell you that they where horrible blood thirsty creatures bent on mass slaughter. Which I guess holds some truth since they did tried to wipe out the Human race.”

I frowned looking down at the paper in my hand. A different language and has intricate tribal tattoos? “Isn't everyone a follower of the Imperious Church? Why would your Dad say something different then everyone else?” Asked Gran.

“Who knows. However I believe that Dad is more accurate then just stating that they were all blood thirsty creatures.” A cold glint entered her eyes. “Plus we all know that history is written by the winners, and we won.”

“What? Upset that you can't see any Demons?” I asked jokingly while folding the paper up as small as I can to fit in one of my pouches.

“Yes I am.” She declared. “It is so unfair. I want to see Demons. Can you imagine what they must have looked like? Ah, what I would give to talk to one...”

“So Gran you a Demon?” I casually asked while Amice rambled on in her own little fantasy world.

“No.” He replied while raising an eyebrow. “If anything you fit the description way more than I do.”

I chuckled softly. “I'm not a Demon either.” Though I have fought beside a few. “However I do seem to meet the description of one here.”

Gran watched me closely. “I have been wondering this for a while Lave. Where do you come from exactly? You speak a language I have never heard before and I have traveled quite a few places. Also how did you learn Common in only one night.”

I glared at Gran. “It is none of your concern Duine.” Really its as if the gods are against me. To send me here and then tell me I look like their Demon race. Don't kid me. As if I could be a Demon. “Just focus on what you need to do. Isn't your mission more important?”

“It is, but I am also very curios about you.” Gran replied with hard eyes.

I scoffed. “Worry not. I will not impede your mission. However you will get no information from me.” Gran and I stared at each other for a while before he sighed.

“So be it.” We continued walking quietly down the road listening to Amice carry on about what the Demon race must have looked like.
