----------------------------------------

The shadow spectre is formed when the soul of a sapient, living entity is siphoned out of their bodies and placed in a contained area with a high concentration of mana. The superfluous mana corrupts the trapped life force and embitters it into a shadow of its former self.

For this reason, shadow spectres are often fascinated by life and naturally want to latch onto souls that shine the brightest in their glowing, yellow eyes.

It is important to note that this process can only be possible if the soul used had sapience before extraction (i.e. most humanoid species). The life essence of the soul thereby deteriorates when it is reformed by the mana; sapience is a requirement to leave the shadow spectre with enough cognitive ability to function properly after the transformation.

The shadow spectre can shape its body into a multitude of forms, including a shift between ethereal and corporeal forms. The corporeal form becomes vulnerable to physical attacks, but also lets the shadow spectre deliver attacks through advanced [Bend Shadow] tricks without draining its mana heart.

In ethereal form, the shadow spectre can only be attacked with magical attacks. It has capacity to pass through almost all non-magical materials, making it an amazing natural assassin. Because of their creation requirements, shadow spectres are rarely naturally occurring. More frequently, they are deliberately created by people for malevolent purposes.

The shadow spectre is not only a costly monster to create, but an inefficient one as well. As this enemy deals its own onslaught of magic, it will drain its mana heart and also the source of its life force. Even though shadow spectres have some powerful magic capabilities, they are not regarded as particularly dangerous to properly trained mages.

It is important to not to let a shadow spectre get within a quarter of its vitality, or else it will be at a higher risk for the magical equivalent of self-destruction. This phenomena is guaranteed at one tenth of its vitality remaining. This is one of the shadow spectre's most prized features—its willingness to dispose of a target at the cost of its own life.

The mana heart is also the most vulnerable part of the shadow spectre in which to deal critical attacks.

Beware: the shadow spectre will consume all of its remaining mana and try to haunt its opponent with one last attack before its death.
