Winnie the Kelpie

Winnie the Kelpie

Lorelei walked out into an open field next to a lake. Wild horses grazed nearby. A few of them scattered across the area, but there was a rather large group of them near the center. Standing behind the group was a more massive horse. Lorelei walked towards them, but when the horse noticed Lorelei’s approach it began to walk towards her. It gracefully turned into a woman as it got closer to Lorelei. The woman’s thick hair was long and light brown. She had brilliant brown eyes and sharp facial features.

“Oh, Lorelei.” The woman and Lorelei hugged. “I have missed you.” They pulled apart, and the woman smiled sweetly. “How are things?”

“Not well, Winnie.” Lorelei sighed. Winry’s face fell, and she took a step back. “Death, and I need your help. All Life and Death creatures will fall if we continue down the path of war and destruction that we seem too stubborn to leave. We are setting up a school to bring the creatures together, and we need teachers with particular skills in being around all types of creatures.” Lorelei tilted her head, “You know, without all the bloodshed.”

Winry smiled slightly. “All creatures, you say? If I’m not mistaken, does that mean you’ve found another Kelpie? We are so rare these days.”

Lorelei nodded slightly and smiled, “Yes, his name is Roan.”

Winry’s eyes lit up. “Oh! A male Kelpie! So much rarer.” she clapped her hands together excitedly. She dreamily stared past Lorelei. “Is he beautiful? Male Kelpies are so beautiful!” Winnie grabbed Lorelei’s hands and tugged her closer to stare into her eyes, searchingly. Lorelei stared back, expressionless for a moment before she simply shrugged smugly. Winry sighed exaggeratedly before she grabbed Lorelei’s cheeks. When Lorelei smacked her hands away, Winry raised her eyebrow theatrically, “I see. I guess no one will ever-”

“Are you gonna help us or not?” Lorelei interrupted her, and Winry gives her a sneaky smile in return.

“I suppose so!” she hummed happily.

“Please don’t get involved with Roan. We need professional behavior.” Lorelei crossed her arms, “I hope this is the only time I have to tell you this.”

Winry slumped over slightly, “Ugh, if you say so. That’s no fun, though.” Lorelei rolled her eyes. “Just because you have your one and only, doesn’t mean you can stop everyone else from finding theirs.” Winry snapped at her but lessened the bite by sticking her tongue out. One of the horses that surrounded them gently bumped their head against Winry’s side, and she turned to look at them.

“It seems like you’re wanted,” Lorelei said softly, looking at the gracious beasts that surrounded them.

“I am.” Winry hummed again, “Don’t keep such a sour look on your face, Lorelei, it might freeze that way.” She closed her eyes as she turned back into a horse. Lorelei watched them run off towards the lake’s edge before she sighed. Emotions flooded her as the cold winds sent a shiver up her spine.
