The Moss Nymph

The Moss Nymph

"Are you kidding me?" Death demanded.

Artemis stood in front of her. Her arms were crossed and she had a defiant look on her face, though her whole body shook slightly. Behind Artemis stood two nymphs. One that was made from lava, and the other ice.

"Two nymphs? You summoned two nymphs?" Irritation dripped from Death’s words.

Artemis shrugged. "I need to feel safe here. This is how I will." She replied calmly.

"Do you seriously believe you can do whatever you want?" Death put her hands together and took a step closer to Artemis. "Because you can't. I am allowing your species to redeem themselves. But, I can’t believe I’m saying this. But, if you need them here so badly," Death sighed and took a step back again. "then they need to take classes too. They need to integrate. They aren't your puppets, they, like you, are people." Death turned around swiftly. "I am choosing the teacher, so don't even think about summoning your own."

Before Artemis could speak, Death grabbed the insides of her cloak and swished it around. Darkness engulfed her body. When her arms came back down she was in the deep lush forests of Transylvania.

Fog crept into the area quietly. Death watched and listened patiently. She took a few steps into the mossy tree area. "I know you're watching me."

A woman with a very long torso moved slightly. What looked like a tree was actually her entire body. She blinked slowly and stared at Death carefully. "I didn't do anything to the humans roaming this forest," she stated. "So, why are you here?"

"I need a favor." Death groaned. "I know your kind doesn't take it upon themselves to do favors, but you're the only one who can do this for me." Death leaned against a tree.

"Does it have anything to do with my Goddess coming back to our realm?" she asked calmly.

Death nodded in response."Yes, I'm giving the Gods a chance to redeem themselves. Through a school, where we will teach students how to integrate with creatures of Life and Death. Artemis took it upon herself to summon her very own nymphs, polar opposites might I add. I really need someone I can trust to teach these young girls how to think for themselves. I will not allow Artemis to take control of the nymph race like she did in the past." The moss woman kept silent while Death ranted. Death hesitated for a moment, "I hope you can agree."

The woman looked around the area and then walked out in the open to reveal the tiny lives living and growing on her body. A tiny butterfly fluttered into the air. The woman took a seat on a fallen tree trunk. "Nymphs did serve Artemis in the past. She kept us safe from the chaos of the witches. In the end, though, we only serve Life. We've found our true way once again, and I will do anything I can to keep that." Death sighed with relief. "But these young nymphs will decide on their own who they wish to serve. Once they make that decision there is nothing we can do."

"What if they already have?" Death asked.

When Moss shrugged a cloud of pollen fell from her body, and a swarm of insects took to the air. "Then I suppose we hope they haven't."
