Book 1 Ch. 4: Entering the Rat Men Cave

The sun already high in the sky by the time Alex made his way to the rat men cave. The reason he took so long was because Alex wanted to prepare a few things before going. First off, since the enemy was a rat based creature, they would have good eyesight in the dark so he doubted there would be much if any source of light inside the cave. So Alex made a few torches out of cloth from the rat men’s clothes, dried grass and twigs, and long thick sticks. Because of Darak and his underlings being smokers Alex had a habit of carrying a few lighters with him at all times.

The other thing was that he managed to salvage a set of armor from the rat men he let bleed out yesterday. Alex had spent some time in the shallows of the cove washing the blood off as well as trying to get as much of the stink out of it. Though he managed to get the blood off, the smell not so much. He could only endure the smell, after all, in a dangerous situation, any extra protection could be the difference between life and death.

At the moment, Alex was wearing a set of rather typical steel armor like something out of a medieval movie. Thanks to the fact that his physical abilities had increased the armor didn’t weigh too much to him. Taking his strength into account Alex had chosen a two handed war hammer as his weapon. The reason was although the war hammer was heavy, it didn’t need much technique to wield compared to a sword or spear. He only needed to hit his opponent to display its power. Though Alex knew it really wasn’t that simple, in the end, it would be easier for him.

Alex glanced over at the Glutton and sighed with a faint smile on his face. This morning Alex had woken up to two surprises. The first was that he noticed Glutton had grown slightly bigger and had grown a sixth head. The other he discovered while he was washing himself of the sweet he had accumulated over night. His own physical appearance had changed somewhat. Alex now had more defined muscles and was a little taller, but that wasn’t the most shocking part. What took him by surprise was that his hair had changed to a dark crimson red and his eyes had changed to an emerald green. Even his overall looks improved, before he was at an average level in looks, however now he could be considered slightly above average.

He suspected the changes at least to his muscle gain and height had to do with eating Glutton’s fruits. With his overall appearance changed he had no idea what could have caused it other than maybe it involving the awaking of the Throne of Unstoppable Nature.

Alex lightly sighed and put the thought aside for later as he rounded the corner to the cave. In front of the cave, twelve rat men stood on guard. Alex noticed these rat-men had slightly better-maintained equipment and looked somewhat tougher.

Could it be because of Alex wiping out so many of them yesterday the rat men are taking more precaution? Alex was interested as to how intelligent the rat men actually were, but at that moment, it didn’t matter since they would soon be dead.

Alex walked out from behind the rocks with an arrogant smile on his face and the rat men instantly turned to look at him. their eyes burned with anger and caution, though they didn’t know who Alex was, the pressure coming from him was enough to make them feel uneasy.

Alex normally wouldn’t have been so confident in his actions as to directly appear before an enemy like that and would rather avoid conflict if possible. However, over the last few days from the battles he had been in Alex had gained a great deal of confidences, or at least, that is what he thought. The real reason for his sudden change in attitude had to do with the awakening of the Throne of Unstoppable Nature as well as the voice that had been whispering to him in his mind. The combination of the two had changed him almost completely overnight.

With a sneer, Alex made a gesture with his finger indicating to come at him. The rat men’s anger increased a great deal at the sight of Alex’s provocation, their instincts told them to kill the arrogant human in front of them.

With shrieks of rage the rat men charged Alex, their weapons raised high. As the rat men approached, Alex didn’t seem worried at all. When the rat men were ten meters away, Alex removed his war hammer from the holder on his back and lowered his stance. The rat-men laughed to themselves, this lone human thought that he could take them on, ridiculous!

Compared to just yesterday the rat men were a lot slower in Alex’s eyes to the point they were as fast as an average man in his eyes. Just as Alex and the rat men were in striking distance of each other Alex jumped back. The rat-men thinking he was scared vigorously pursued him. Alex continued to hop backward until he got to a group of rock then stopped. The rat-men didn’t care as to why he stopped they only knew it was a chance to finally attack the slippery human.

Suddenly the rocks behind Alex trembled and Glutton burst out like a wrecking ball smashing the rocks to pieces. The sudden appearance of Glutton took the rat men by surprise, but they didn’t have enough time to react before Glutton began his feast. Four of the closest rat men were grabbed and ripped apart as Glutton’s remain heads lunged out to capture more prey. The rat-men panicked in the confusion at tried to run.

Alex taking advantage of the confusion brandished his hammer and crushed the skull of one of the fleeing rat men. With half of their comrades killed in an instant the other rat men moved even faster in their hysterical fear. Sadly they didn’t get far before a group of thick grayish brown roots erupted from the ground and impaled them.

The fresh rat kabobs squirmed seeing their entrails smeared on the roots. They cried out weakly as Alex and Glutton approached. Alex passed the rat men without a second thought and said in a calm tone, “remember not to waste food ok.”

Glutton made a sound that was sounded like a mix of a grunt and a chirp signifying its understanding and joy as its heads drew closer to the speared rat men.

The sound of crushing and ripping came from behind Alex as he continued towards the cave’s entrance. Alex was slightly surprised before he would have been somewhat squeamish from the sounds of Glutton eating, but now it didn’t affect him at all and it made him feel uneasy that he hadn’t cared at all about the death of the rat men.

Once again he sighed while shaking off his current thoughts. There was a time and a place to think things over. A calm smile once again appeared on Alex’s face when he tossed his thoughts aside.

Once Alex entered the cave, he saw that there were veils of bluish crystals on the walls. The crystals glowed faintly lighting the cave just enough for Alex to see. Slightly irritated that he had taken the time to make his own light source Alex preseeded with caution. Glutton silently followed behind Alex acting as the radar and navigator since it had it's <> skill.

After only a couple minutes, dozens of rat men came scurrying from the depths of the cave. Alex without a second thought moved behind Glutton. He waved his hand and vines sealed the top completely trapping the rat men inside. Because of the wall, the rat men couldn’t make use of their numbers and had to run between the walls three at a time. Because of this Glutton could take its time eating them three at a time.

When the rat men started to become too numerous, they swarmed through the funnel-like tunnel faster than the two could kill them. Alex used << Root Lances>> to skewer a dozen rat-men that were running through the path he created. At the same time, this cut off the way to reach Alex and Glutton allowing them to deal with the rat men in front of them without having to worry about reinforcements.

Once the two had cleared out the rat men, Alex unsealed the path and allowed more rat men through. This process had continued for an hour before Alex leaned against the wall breathing heavily. Throughout the battle, Alex had gained a few levels so he looked at his status page.

Yesterday Alex had discovered that the effects of Glutton’s fruits doubled the growth rate while with the awakening of the Throne of Unstoppable Nature all his physical stat’s growth doubled yet again while his magic and magic resistance were now 4 times.

(X4 = Physical Stats / X4 = Magic Stats)

To him, this growth was quite terrifying, but it wasn’t a bad thing in the least since it only meant he would grow strong four times faster! What was just as eye-catching was that his percentage of control over the Throne of Unstoppable Nature had already increased by 2%!

Because he had leveled up so much Alex’s mana supply had skyrocketed. If he had used the tactic of creating the two walls and roots to block the path of the rat men he wouldn’t have lasted for more than a few minutes. Now he fought continuously for an hour. Really, his growth was ridiculous. Alex wondered if his stat growth would increase for each Throne he awakened, that was a thought that made his shake with excitement.

After resting for half an hour, Alex decided to move deeper into the cave. To get rid of the rat-men that were on the other side of the blockade he had created Alex used <> to kill half the rat men then removed the walls and made a new wall that was only six feet high. This forced the rat men to climb over it, but Alex and Glutton would be waiting for them. Between Glutton’s always moving mouths and Alex’s destructive hammer swings the remain rat men were cleared in ten minutes.

Continuing deeper into the cave the path split into three ways. Using Glutton’s superior sense of smell the way to the left had the most rat men, the right had the fewest, and the center didn’t have any but a different smell from an unknown creature.

At the moment, Alex only wanted to grind levels so he went to the left, which had the most enemies. The path wasn’t long and at the end, it opened up to a massive cavern that had three layers. The bottom floor which was the smallest could fit two football fields side by side and still have some place left. The next two floors were rings around the first and were only had half the space of the first floor. On each level were hundreds of holes most likely those were the homes of the rat men.

When Alex entered the cave, a large group that liked to number around a few hundred rat men were waiting. With a glance to the side, Alex saw that smaller and thinner rat men were hiding in the holes peering out nervously.

“Those must be the women and children, huh.” Alex’s cool voice echoed throughout the cavern even though he had spoken softly.

The women and children shook when they heard his voice and the rat men males stiffened before they began to prepare their weapons. It was obvious they were afraid to fight though Alex didn’t really blame them since he had already slaughtered quite a few of their comrades.

Exhaling deeply Alex, turned around and left the cave. Seeing the women and children tugged at his heart strings. When he saw that the rat men defending that village like area, he saw that none of them were warriors. Maybe because of him being from another world, he didn’t believe in involving noncombatants in war. Though the situation wasn’t a war, his morals told him unless they attack him to leave them alone.

Down the right tunnel, he did find rat men. However, they were all six feet tall and built like bulls.

“What the hell, who gave these guys steroids!?” Alex said with a bitter smile.

Not only were these rat-men bigger their equipment looked several times better than the previous rat men. Alex had a feeling these rat-men wouldn’t be nearly as easy to handle as the ones before.

One of the large rat men sniffed the air and turned to Alex. It stared at Alex with a look of surprise for a moment, then rage.

It opened its mouth and to Alex’s surprise shouted in a rough voice, “Human here hurry kill!” the rat man’s cry alerted the others nearby and Alex cursed.

“This is going to be annoying! Glutton get ready to eat your fill!”
