Chapter 6: A Mysterious Gift

A few days later, John went into town with his mother. John’s mother then went into a store in the town, she then told John to wait outside since she was going to be quick. Waiting patiently on a bench outside on the left side of the store, John watched the people of the town going back and forth; some off to their jobs while others just going about their day. Just then, he heard a strange voice calling out to him from the other side of the store, the voice sounding hoarse.

John then approached the other side of the store and came to an ally where a crippled man sitting against the wall, wearing ragged clothing and his face and head covered in a cloth hood, “Hello there, boy.” the man said. John cautiously went up to the man and asked him what he wanted.

“I want to give you something.” the man replied.

“I’ve heard about these people, never trust them.” John said in his mind. “What is it you want to give me?”

“It’s a gift that was passed down from person to person. Granting them eternal life.”

“What kind of gift.”

A heavenly gift,” the man said pulling the hood off of his face, revealing a face that looked neither young nor old but had facial details of an older adult like white hair and many wrinkles, his face was also partially deformed. “Although, some have called it… A curse. But I don’t see it that way.”

“Why do you want to give it to me?”

“Simple, you’re young. You have your whole life ahead of ya; you’re the perfect recipient for the gift.” the man said reaching into his pocket. “Look here, boy.”

The man then showed John a small, oval-shaped, diamond necklace. John remembering the words of DeathKill, quickly refused the offer, but the man insisted he take it, “Come on, you won’t regret taking it, it’ll change your life forever. For the better.” The man said handing the necklace to John. John then looked at the necklace, then back at the man’s face which was a creepy smile due to his face deformity. “I mean, DeathKill did say that if it was blue I shouldn’t take it, but this one is white.” John thought about it before agreeing to take it, “How much?” he asked.

“That’s not for me to decide, the gift will decide what price being worn by you is worth. Just don’t let anyone else wear it, as the gift will always find a way back to its master.” the man replied with a cackle before giving the necklace to John and crawling away. “That was weird.” John said to himself before going back to the bench to wait for his mother.

After waiting for what felt like an hour, John’s mother exited the store and told John that their final stop was the town clinic. Like last time, John waited outside and while waiting, he closely inspected the necklace, “It’s just a diamond necklace.” he said. “Maybe he was just talking about another necklace, there’s no dragon symbol on it.” John’s mother walked out of the clinic, John quickly put the necklace in his pocket. “Alright, John; let’s go home.” she said happily, her face having a bright glow to it. They then headed back to the house.
