Tell us a little about yourself- How did you get to be a professional artist?
I have always drawn since I was a little kid and of course, I read comics. They were an incredible influence on me as an artist growing up. Still are.
I began to attend comic cons when I was in high school. They provided an incredible opportunity to come face to face with so many artists I idolized. I remember being completely awed(& scared out of mind) that I could just go up and talk with them. They were my heroes. Now they are my peers and I'm still in awe.
It's a long story but, one project just kind of lead to another for me. I feel fortunate to do stuff on a professional level that I've loved since I was a kid. Keeps me young at heart.
Take us through the GodHunters cover- How do you get started? What tools do you use? Anything you're particularly proud of?
It all starts with the treatment. This was a very enjoyable read that brought some great visuals to mind.
Once I get "it" set in my mind it goes right to some quick thumbnails to see if I can capture the feel and compose it. I normally work out a couple of concepts. Once I'm satisfied with the direction of the thumbnail it's pretty standard procedure. Pencils to inks. Scan it and color in Photoshop.
I think if I'm proud of anything it's that I was bit rusty going into this one. I've had a "side hustle" that's kept me from drawing regularly. It felt good to get back to get back in the saddle.
Where else can GodHunters fans see more of your work?
I do some work with my brothers(Matt & Kevin) who are also professionals. You can see our work at universe-m.com.
Quick, name five artists you admire that everyone should know about.
Dang...only 5? Okay! Adam Hughes, Geof Darrow, Travis Charest, Moebius and Mike Mignola. Visual masters.
Obligatory last question- What advice do you have for any aspiring artists reading this?
Share your work. Post it. Go crazy with social media. Connect with people who share your passion. If you love to draw comics you must attend comic cons. Take your work. You will never have a better opportunity in your life to talk with pros and get feedback on your craft. Do what you love!
