Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Rafferty's blade sliced through the God's leg in a shower of blue sparks. She managed to get nearly halfway through on the first cut, and pulled the sword out with a satisfied grunt, allowing herself to think that this just might work.

She had just dodged a second thunderstrike on the way in. The skin on her left side was still hot and flushed. If this was going to work, it had to work fast.

Rafferty spun and swung again. The blow bit into the metal, the insides snapping and popping as she forced the blade as far as it would go. She pulled her weapon free again, and the God began to totter.

Control the fall!

Control the fall!

Control the fall!

She leapt back and forth from one of the God's legs to the other. With each jump, a slight flick of the wrist forced the Blue into the tight metal bracelets on her forearms, adding extra oomph to her strikes. It was simple. If the God landed face first, it couldn't throw another attack at her. If it landed on its back, it could.

Rafferty was guessing at the strike points as best she could. She wished that Sheridan were here, even if her hallmate would never have agreed to such a blatant breach of protocol. Sheridan was the queen of angles.

She thought if she could poke it one more time just above the knee, she'd send it down the way she wanted it to go. She jumped.

And she missed.

Balls!

There was no more time. The God was coming down now, and not in the good lacking fire and death kind of way. Rafferty had to get out from under it. She jumped, hit the ground, and rolled. When the mountain of metal crashed, the impact lifted her into the air, and banged her hard against the earth.

Rafferty stood and turned her back on the God. She took one last look over her shoulder, judging the distance. Satisfied, she closed her eyes, and prepared to do what Cody always called "that thing."

Rafferty launched herself straight into the air. As she crested, a familiar sensation spread through her body. Rafferty never felt more at peace, or more like her herself, than she did at the top of this turn.

This moment, right here. I live for this.

She arched her back, allowing gravity to flip her into position. This was either going to work, or she was about to get crispy right here in mid-air.

Either way, Rafferty was sure it would look awesome.

She was diving headfirst now, and everything lined up: The boots, the chest plate, the bracelets, the sword, even the color changing hair band. Rafferty gave a tilt of the chin, the last necessary little movement, and felt the Blue bubble within her, and watched as it exited through the point of the sword. Soon, she couldn't even see her target. Rafferty was plummeting toward the ground atop a blue cloud that simultaneously consumed her opponent while cushioning her own body.

Rafferty braced for impact….

and awoke several minutes later, staring at the sky.

She wasn't dead, so it might have worked. Unless she was about to get stepped on. Curious as to which it was, Rafferty turned her head to the left, which was about all she could manage at the moment.

The God was still there, even that move couldn't destroy something this big, but it had a large hole in it, and it wasn't moving.

Heh. Guess I won.

Rafferty decided she had earned a least a short rest, so she stayed as she was. Not that her body gave her much choice in the matter.

She heard the motorcycle before she heard the nagging, but not by much.
