Chapter Fifty-Eight

Ow.

Ever since the Zero's black poison had wormed its way into her face, it wasn't unusual for Rafferty to wake up with headaches. So when she opened her eyes the next morning to find her head pounding, she wasn't surprised. When she finished blinking away the sleep and saw the whiskey bottle staring back at her, Rafferty realized there might be another reason.

Stupid cup.

Last night came back to her in scraps and fragments.

She seemed to remember being perched on someone's shoulders, her head scraping the ceiling, laughing really loudly.

Also some sort of game that involved flipping matchsticks, which Rafferty was apparently quite good at, even though she couldn't remember the rules right now. For some reason, this memory was linked to another memory of Seth and Brianna kissing with a comical amount of tongue while Katrin counted to ten.

Rafferty's eyes drifted up, and she noticed the long gash in her wall.

Hey, Kat, I bet you're too drunk to slice this bottle in half if I toss it in the air!

Shut your stupid face, bitch!

Okay, here it comes!

Oooooh, Seth was right.

Rafferty started to roll over and bumped into another human. Apparently, her guests had made good on their promise to stay the night.

All right. It doesn't seem too bright out in the hall. I can just wake them up, shoo them out of here real quietly, and make it down to breakfast like nothing ever happened. Assuming of course, that all of my hallmates slept super soundly and we didn't make nearly as much noise as I think we did. And Trevor must have some sort of putty or something that will fix my wall. He'll complain. A lot. But still.

There was a soft knock on the door.

"Good morning, Rafferty, I have a —- oh, wow there are a lot of people in here," Cody said as she entered the room. She had a piece of paper in her hand.

Rafferty opened her mouth to say something, but only managed a grunt.

"Ok, well I have this, oh, sorry Seth, I'm just going to step over you. Anyway, here's—actually there's someone's sword stuck in the floor over here. Ok, I'll just move around it for now, but that's super dangerous, you know" she continued.

Cody navigated her way to Rafferty's bed. Rafferty looked up at her through blurry eyes.

"Max wanted me to give this to you. You're supposed to meet an important donor tonight. I'll leave this right here—oh, wet," Cody said, setting the paper on a pillow.

"Thank you," Rafferty managed in a voice that would have sounded harsh on a dying old man.

"Yeah, ok, I'm glad you're back, and I'm just gonna— Are these somebody's pants? I'll just put those here. Yeah, I'm just gonna go, and I'll see—ew, ew, ew," Cody said, shaking her hand like she was trying to get something off of it.

"I'll just see you later," she said, hurrying down the hall as she left the room.

Stupid cup.
