Chapter 23: A Dance of Vine and Flame

The figure of Remus blurs into motion and the wave of flame passes through where he stood only to strike the stone wall near the gate. The flames flicker and become a spiderweb of frost across the gray stones. Marshall blinks quickly not seeing where the Owl man went. Pyra only growls before channeling a [Pyroblast] in one hand, and twisting her fingers on the other.

"Well, that was exciting, especially since you are still at a low level." Remus' voice carrying on the air, and the two look up to see him hanging from the roof of a building near with his feet. Not even looking a little ruffled from the attack, "I was hoping to take you in for questioning, but I see that you will have to be--" a screaming ball of plasma explodes where he was just hanging, sending the roof into the air and in pieces. The flames from the attack only smoldering the pieces of wood, and frost once again claiming much of the impact. Marshall looked up first before looking around, and spotting Remus back in place by the gate. Pyra noticed as well and swiped her hand several times in the air, a haze forming around her, and her skin seeming to lose a vibrancy to it.

"I say, can a man have a mome--" The blue-white cage of flames cut Remus off again, and Marshall saw the clothes on the man smolder and burn, "Fine then." He spoke before lifting up his hands, and vines lashed out of his body to dispel the flames. Though they were charred and frosted from the attempt. Pyra had already charged and released another [Pyroblast] after the [Ember Shaping] had held the Shaman. This time vine met flame, and the resulting explosion sent Marshal flying back along with Pyra. His back slammed against a building and it shifted slightly, though his back hurt far more. Glancing around the first thing he saw was a hole in the ground, and Remus getting up to his own feet. He didn't see Pyra but the sudden heat and wave of roiling fire from his left gave him a good indication on where she was.

"I am not sure what I personally did here..." Another vine snapping out to launch the man into the air, and out of the wave's path, "But I feel like I am missing something." He says as a blast of plasma crashes into him.

"I was not in a good mood." Pyra responds, he voice filled with a level of rage and her aura blazing. Most of her hair was black with burning lines like embers blazing within. Though Marshall was pretty sure she was running out of mana, "Then I see someone watching me and it felt like an attack. So I will put that threat down." Her words confirmed his suspicions, she would only talk to give her mana time to recover. Though most would have been dead from only half those spells, and yet it didn't surprise him when a very burnt cloak hit the cobblestone road.

"I see, well since you are low enough on mana to talk for a moment," The figure of Remus, now cloakless, lands on the street after the cloak. He glances down to the growing pile of ash, "I liked that cloak..."

"You have a very short window to talk, starting now." Pyra responds, and Marshall is both impressed and confused at her confidence. Stories put Remus at level 18 to 20 and a master of his class. His raw stats would likely let him lift the wall up and walk under it. Yet, it was hard to not notice the patches of burning feathers, and spiderwebs of frost along his body. As well as the look of worry on his face.

"Well, I felt powerful waves of dungeon magic here, and thought I had missed a new one being born." He says, sitting down on the ground, the embers seemed to be crawling across his body. Was Pyra's attacks like a form of poison? "See, beyond wanting to kick all the humans from the Realm I like to greet new dungeons. It is part of the old old job of a Shaman." Pyra raises an eyebrow at him, and Marshall decided she also wondered at the truth of his words.

"It's true, humans aren't from THIS Realm, and they have done nothing but hurt everyone in their time here--" He is cut off by Pyra forming another [Pyroblast] and launching it at him. He tries to stand up, but one of his legs breaks near the middle and he falls to the ground. Marshall's eyes widen as he realizes what is going on, just as the blast consumes and explodes the body.

"That wasn't Remus," He says to Pyra, who is looking less angry though she turns towards him.

"Explain." She says with a flat tone, though her hair starts to revert to ash and black.

"As a Shaman Remus can control plants, and I bet one of the things he can do at higher levels is create plant Golems. That thing we fought was Remus controlling one. That's why he didn't feel any pain from your fire, but didn't notice the damage before his leg gave out. Which also means we should probably just head out of town here fast. There might be another Golem on it's way." He finishes, surprised that she seemed to be calming down. Knowing that your enemy was playing with you or not really dead usually made people more frustrated.

"Alright, let's go." She says, barely looking at him before turning to walk towards the gate. Then, she stops to look around at all the damage from the fight. Burning wood and roofs here and there, the wall heavy cracked and with ice coating it. The large hole in the road, and the pile of ash that used to be a Golem. Pyra was still working through her feelings at the System, but it hit her how she wasn't living up to her namesake at this point. Her name meant 'Flame that brings Joy' and all around her was just ruin. Her fire was constantly bringing pain and sorrow at this point, and she decided she would worry about it later. When they were far from this place, and maybe not until she returned home. It hurt to think about such things, and she did have a journey to complete for her Mother as well. Maybe should would find answers out there, like the girl in the story. A wise wizard would share his secrets and wisdom, and all would become clear. Though that Shaman would have to be watched out for. She did break his stuff after all.

Marshall watched her walk, stop, and then continue walking again. He worried about her even more now that he was sure about her origins. She had just been through a lot, and was actually less than a year old. Even if their adventure was smooth from here out, it was likely that she wouldn't deal with what happened today. Her hair and aura gave him the feeling that she would suppress the pain and grief until it burned her up just like it did to the Golem. One day she would go to step and her leg would shatter, and all her bravado would blow away as ash. Resolving himself he decided he would do what he could. He wasn't any less troubled, but he at least knew that he could give her advice that he would have gotten from his elders. Even if he couldn't find it in himself to move past his own, maybe it would give her the strength to not fall when she stumbled.
