Fusion Talent in a Monster Taming World
Chapter 2: Headless Statue

Chapter 2: Headless Statue

It was a new day, the deadline for the exam was approaching. Felix wasn’t worried about it. Even if he performed badly, it’s not like it would matter. As a person with connections, it would be a shame to not use it.

His worries were something more superficial as he stared at his body in the mirror.

‘There are too many tattoos on my body.’

These tattoos were imprints of all the monsters he had contracted. The imprint for Mu was a small red 3-pointed crown on his heart. Felix’s case was pretty normal. Monster Tamers could contract an unlimited amount of monsters.

They could also store their monster in their dimensional space, called the pocket dimension. It was only accessible by Monster Tamers, and when a Monster Tamer dies. The contract on all their monsters gets cancelled and all the monsters in their pocket dimension gets released.

The only thing stopping them from contracting so many monsters was strength, wealth, and connections.

Luckily for Felix, he had the latter two. While his strength was still developing, he believed he could stand at the peak of the world once he figured out how his fusion talent worked.

All humans had the chance to awaken a talent at 14. Felix was 18 now, and had already graduated from high school. Although he didn’t particularly care about getting a higher education, his granddad told him it would be beneficial to him.

So that old man involuntarily signed him up for the exam.

If Felix were to compare to a normal human just physically, he could easily crush them with just brute strength alone. He couldn’t even remember the amount of monsters that he had contracted at this point. But all these extra monsters were basically fodder to help boost his physical strength.

Mu was still his strongest monster. The other monsters were simply too weak compared to Mu.

Finished checking upon his fair-toned body, Felix went to the living room and turned on the TV with a remote. He already got an ant to heat up a breakfast for him, so he simply waited while watching the TV.

“A student from the Eastern Continent is noted to be taking part in the Western Continent Central Exam. Countless speculations about who this mysterious examinee is circulating online. With many heated debates speculating about their identity and their monsters.”

Hearing what the news reporter lady was talking about, Felix couldn’t help but let out a sigh of exasperation.

‘Great, more strong opponents.’

Anyone who participated in a foreign country’s exam was a genius with confidence in their strength. This culture had been going on for decades. With the main goal being trying to flex on the other country. This has led to a situation where native participants gang up on the foreigner.

‘Hopefully, I avoid this foreigner. I’d rather not get into pointless fights.’

Felix was a very willful person who liked to do things in stride. He didn’t like to put too much effort into things he wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about. He’d rather this exam be a breeze, where he could put minimal effort into while getting what he wanted.

With his eyes fixated on the TV, he couldn’t help but break contact when he smelled his breakfast.

It was a burrito with stuffed eggs and sausages inside. Felix had no cooking skills, all his food was pre-packaged items he could easily heat.

Not embarrassed about his lack of culinary talent, he ate the burrito in happiness.

His phone’s ringtone interrupted his breakfast. Seeing who was calling him, he couldn’t help but rub his eyes.

‘Dr. Alvin, man, I don’t want to talk to him right now.’

Dr. Alvin was very enthusiastic about him. He was a researcher under his granddad’s command. When he first met him, he spent 8 hours with him doing experiments with his fusion talent.

Picking up the phone.

“What do you want, Alvin?”

“Felix, my boy, listen to me.”

Hearing his loud and cheerful voice made Felix’s hand instinctively hover over the ‘end’ button.

“Yeah?”

“I asked your granddad for two rare monsters. I believe that these two monsters are closely related to each other, but maybe a split in the past caused them to be separated. I wish to use your talent to see if I could fuse them.”

Hearing what he said, Felix couldn’t help but be intrigued. So he asked in an inquisitive tone.

“Oh, what are these two monsters?”

“Headless Six Winged Statue and Excalibur’s False Replica. I believe that if we fused them together, we could make a stronger monster that could easily help you crush your exam.”

“Alright, I’ll meet you at the lab in 2 hours.”

Hanging up on the phone, Felix couldn’t help but be intrigued. Although this wasn’t the first time that he heard of this statement from Dr. Alvin, his curiosity was still there. Even if countless failures had ground down his enthusiasm.

His fusion talent wasn’t a simple process. Although he could technically fuse two different species of monster together, it didn’t guarantee that the process had a 100% success rate. Not only that, the fused monster might be even weaker than the original materials.

Alvin and Felix were putting many theories together behind his fusion talent. Trying to figure out ways they could increase the success rate of the fusion process, at the same time trying to fuse and create stronger and better monsters.

They had a few successes. The monsters were stronger than their original materials, but did it really matter when the new monster was stronger than their original materials by a few percentages?

Felix was looking for a qualitative change, not to mention that none of the successful monsters had the strength to rival Mu. They were also crippled with no chance of getting stronger, too. Their body was very unstable, effectively cutting off their evolution, and he couldn’t fuse more monsters into this already unstable monster.

After he finished devouring the burrito, he washed his hands and called for a ride.

2 hours later, Felix was being enthusiastically dragged around by a tall but rancid-smelling researcher in a lab coat. If he didn’t know of this person’s personality, he would assume that he swung the other way.

The person who was dragging him around was Dr. Alvin. He was a very pale man, with messy hair that hadn’t been washed in days. His eyes were sunken and his cheekbones were very high. Felix was already accustomed to his appearance.

This was a private building that was owned by his granddad. The entire floor and walls were sparkling white tiles. Maybe it was because he frequented this building so much, but the smell of antiseptic had grown on him.

While dragging him around, Alvin warned Felix.

“Felix, be careful, the statue is quite strong, so when contracting it, you’ll have to subdue it first, same with the sword.”

“Alright, I’ll be careful.”

Alvin nodded while explaining passionately.

“This might be the results that we have been chasing after for the past few years, Felix. Can you feel the blood pumping through my veins?”

“Alvin, I’m still surprised your body can function like a normal human.”

Although Dr. Alvin was a mad scientist, he still cared for Felix’s safety. Which was something he appreciated about the man.

It was not until they reached a room that was heavily restricted and monitored did Felix finally caught a glimpse of the two monsters he was going to be experimenting on. The room was divided evenly, with a thick wall separating the two monsters away from each other.

On the left side of the room was a white statue whose height was approximately 2.5 meters tall. The statue’s material seemed to be made of marble with delicately designed carving depicting a robed person with six wings behind his back.

Its hands were interlocked together in a prayer motion. But the most striking thing about the statue was its head, more specifically its lack of a head. The head of the statue was cleanly cut off, with no signs of damage, almost as if the statue was always meant to look like that.

On the right side of the room was a sword sheathed in a rock.

Borrowing from the legend of King Arthur, the sword was plunged deeply into the rock. The rock looked just like a regular rock, but the sword was what stood out the most. It was a marble, cross sword, with many religious patterns on its hilt. The blade of the sword that was sticking out of the rock was clean and sharp looking, with no carvings on the blade.

What stood out about the statue and the sword was that they seemed to be made of the same material. Even though they were different species.

“Alright, open up the door. I’ll test its strength.”

“Just be careful, although it looks like a statue. It moves abnormally fast.”

Felix would rather not fight the statue by himself, but it was necessary. If you wanted them to acknowledge you, the best way was to beat them up yourself.

Alvin methodically took out the many keys inside his coat before he found the right one. Walking into the now unlocked room, Felix couldn’t help but be surprised. As a marble fist was already heading towards his face. The moment he stepped inside the room, the statue had moved with such speed that its fist was a few centimeters apart from caving his skull in.

The heavy collision between the marble fist and flesh caused a fine blood mist to flurry around the room.

When the bloody mist parted, it revealed the perfectly intact figure of Felix. What wasn’t intact was the red ant that had its head exploded from the punch from the statue. Seeing the damage caused by the statue, Felix couldn’t help but anticipate what would happen when he fused the statue and the sword together. How strong would the new monster be?
