Freedom in the New World
Being a dev sucks

Being a dev sucks

The second idea was for spellcasting in power armor. “Let us make some paid upgrades for the power armor like allowing for easier casting in the armor, ‘Swift Armored casting’ or something like that. This gives a level 100 caster and a level 100 warrior a more even playing field.”

James had another idea, but it would never be allowed unless it was a cache up item, in a gotcha, or a drop from a world boss. I will have to talk to some of the other development teams later about some of my other ideas. He did not want Yggdrasil to change too much, lest it affect the new world too much, but then again, he wanted ever more to enjoy. Items that can raise the level cap of a player or NPC would be a real game changer.

The fourth through sixth ideas were close enough for his purposes. The ability to make a golem into a guilds weapon and to make a set of armor powered or otherwise into a guild weapon. A change to golems to allow then to possess multiple cores. Being as he had made it so something could be both a golem and powered armor this worked well for him.

“Well those are all my ideas for now, best not to try too much and have it flop on us.” Thus, the work began designing how each world item would be affected by becoming part of powered armor. In that process he, and several others, were allowed access to a dev testing room where he could make the necessary tweaks and changes in a more hands on way.

Some items originally thought to work well turned out to be far harder to work in than expected, and others that they thought would not work, worked better than they could have dreamed. James and the other testers successfully tested every world item that was in the game.

Seeing so many world items he did not know both exhilarated him and frightened him. Seeing all the world items Yggdrasil had to offer gave james both a sense of desire to collect them all and the desire to make sure they reached the right hands.

James knew that if he kept playing, he might eventually obtain a world item that he knew was supposed to be in the hands of someone else. For this eventuality he had a rather simple plan. Sell the world items to the groups or people they were supposed to go to for something, perhaps a favor. He would have to deal with each case as they arose.

The powered armor project was in a word, brutal. It was a week of late nights and early mornings, even the weekend, he only went home twice this week. All that time spent working on the powered armor and the many features that would come with it. He had to take breaks occasionally to refresh his mind and to wash away some of his mental fatigue. On those breaks he would occasionally give Reo a text, just to ask about her day. He had tried to call her once during the day, but that turned out to be a bad idea on an even worst day for her.

On many of his other breaks he would be busy calling the heads of the other development teams. He pitched some of his more game breaking ideas to those leading teams pertaining to what he was interested in adding. Though he and the team devoted to working on the powered armor had been working with the paid item team for the project, the head of that team said he would have to get back to him on the level cap raising items.

When he and the team were almost finished with the update, they had tested the update and fixed far too many bugs and glitches. Far too many were fixes for things that were game breaking or nearly so.

The manager of the power armor project, Takeda, came in the next morning to find james still working at a desk. “Hey James, did you not go home last night?” James jumped at the sudden voice, “It’s ok man don’t have a heart attack.” Looking over his shoulder at the screen he asked, “Is it done already? Did you and the team really get all that insane work done in a week?” James rubbed the crust from his eyes, “Yeah I was just working on some other projects.” “I’m seriously impressed, we will all get raises for sure. As for you, go home and take the day off. No one will give you shit about it, not after this.”

James looked at Takeda managing a small smile, he tried to stand, but found his legs could not hold him. Takeda helped James to his feet as he called his driver to come pick him up. Takeda helped James make his way to and down the express elevator.

“Thanks for the help man. I might have to take more than a day off to get this sorted out.” Said James, genuine in his gratitude and even more so on the time off. “No problem. Thanks to you and your work should all go well everyone on the team will be getting a well-deserved raise, especially you. They will probably use you to help other dev teams out to help everyone get ahead.” Interrupted only by the ding of the elevator as the doors slide open to let them continue their way out of the building. James’ phone buzzed once meaning his driver had just arrived.

“If all goes well the update will launch in about a month gives us plenty of time to advertise to the player base and rake in new players, and its all thanks to you.” By this time, they had arrived at the car waiting out front for James. As soon as they approached the car James’ four bodyguards leapt into action thinking that James had been injured. James seeing their hasty approach and panicked voices he simply raised his left hand, due to his right hand and arm being swung around Takeda’s neck to help him keep upright.

“Its alright I’m just having some trouble walking from sitting so long. Please take me home.” James waved goodbye as best he could as Takeda relinquished James to the custody of his protective detail. James was fast asleep before they had even buckled his seat belt. He dreamt of world items and the mighty people who would wield them.
