Chapter 8; Threat within the shade

Chapter 8; Threat within the shade

> Julia, the first to fall at the hands of the mad god.

>

> As the god of eternity, her powers were obviously born of eternity. Practically unkillable she remained as the first of the old gods, a woman turned god that ruled the world for millenia.

>

> Her hegemony lasted long after the other old gods ascended, though her reign was not without hiccups due to rebellions and confrontations from other old gods.

>

> Though her reign fell to the subjugation of the mad god, as the first of whose authority graced [Memoire of the old gods], for she was not amongst the most powerful of the old gods; rather the one most difficult to kill and stubborn in her revenge.

>

> Though only half of her authority lies within the blade, as a fault of the mad god's inexperience. Though he quickly learnt from his mistake, and such a fumble never occured again.

----------------------------------------

After only a few tests, he had found that pushing too much mana into a slime, it would shatter.

But, the higher in the D-chain- The chain that a D slime has to go through to gain more power, mostly in the form of endurance- The more mana a slime could bear in the acceleration process, but also that it required more mana for the same amount of slime core.

Luckily though, it seemed that the increase of mana intake was faster than the increase in mana requirements.

Truthfully, it was a shame that he had so little mana, otherwise he could've- Theoretically- Mass produced nuclei supporting slimes.

A real shame.

But it was still nice to know that if he let slimes live long enough that they'd be able to see somehow.

It wouldn't be too much of a problem to create a ton of slimes and hope one or two would live, with how high his mana regeneration had become, the sole mana of one slime- A regular slime in particular- Was pocket change.

Otherwise, the amount of slimes he was producing in the slime plains would be unsustainable.

Though, Falc did want to know, could a slime with a nuclei think?

If so, then he could give a thinking slime more muscles, set new templates of muscles beyond or intersecting the original which would allow a thinking slime to jump around differently, more aggressively.

Currently a slime's jump was static, consistent, so that one of those mindless, seizure-chasing, slimes wouldn't be able achieve their one goal in life. Which they were certain to do if given the chance.

With the notification from a subordinate part of himself, he noted that room 6 had finally had the rough schematic put into the material realm.

Falc paused his slime contemplations, and considered what he could do to it to make it cause the most averse reaction in his persuers.

Ah, yes, let's make all the stone as uneven and rough as possible. He concluded, after seeing that the wobbly parts that he included in the tunnel because he wanted to get it done quickly caused a negative 'Response' in sentients. Maybe a few spikes too? He wondered for a moment, before nodding and including it too.

Then he returned to his thoughts, about a slime being able to think. After merely a moment, an experiment came to his mind and went back to slime apostle 1- Long may he reign- and ordered one thing; Use only one muscle.

And, it did- Tried to at least, since every muscle was somewhat interconnected and constricting one of them would pull others with the first. But that was fine, at least it could try. But, he did need to make sure this came from the nuclei and not the level slime apostle 1 had gained.

So his mind's eye turned back to the little cubic room next to his own hidden room, and- Failure.

Apperently this other slime was dumb, but it could see, which was still good enough.

Taking that into account, he began to think of what he could do with the excess mana he now had to spend as to keep mana regeneration going- It was a lose it or use it budget, and Falc would rather use it- But Falc was averse to paying the fee of making slimes with skills, at least as a means to avoid reaching the maximum of his mana pool.

And making more slimes as a hope to pause sentients was foolish, since the slimes seemed to do nothing except act as a slight annoyance and distraction. And even if they lived long enough to form a nuclei, all they could do was jump about if he didn't add a skill, and their current jump wasn't fast enough to not be dodgeable if not paying attention- Or not trying to dodge at all if you consider that 'Slave'.

There were also no skills that he could buy which could be consider 'Good', even if he had more than ten essence now, which was growing at a slightly faster rate due to the off weakling that one of the few acid slimes were killing out of pure luck- Except slime apostle 1, Long may he reign.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

If he could just make sure a slime can live long enough to gain a nuclei Falc wouldn't have any worry over certain experiments, but seizures were not good for a magically animated blob of weird water.

Falc had to think for some time, before he had the idea of just ordering a slime to do absolutely nothing! A slime can't kill itself, have a seizure, or anything else that could kill it if it just didn't do anything at all!

He created a base slime in the little hole where the other test slime with a nuclei was housed, and commanded 'Stop doing stuff.' It worked for a moment, but the very next it returned to what it was doing. Falc tried once more but keeping a piece of himself focusing on the slime's inferior mind- If you could even say it had one- And seeing if that did that anything.

Sadly, it did.

Why sadly? Because then he'd have to constantly put a part of himself out of action until a nuclei was created.

----------------------------------------

It was a sad day, someone had died to a slime. But luckily, he had died with at least a modicum of honour, as a few minutes later after everyone came over the shock brought by a man's face being melted by acid someone used .

A kid, a mage specifically. Truly, some great thoughts were brewing up in that small noggin. To have the thought of inspecting an acid-spouting slime to see what it was, no one else even thought about it on account of it being a slime of all things; I personally assumed it was just a lucky acid slime who was favoured by initiative. But shamefully, I was wrong;

Slime apostle 1 Common

A slime able to produce and expel an acidic fluid enlightened by transcension, and crowned by its creator.

Weakness; Aspected attacks.

Sadly, we only read this screen minutes after the horrifying incident, having ignored the small mage's words. Having mostly looked at it only for him to finally shut up about it.

But this, this made the choice to allow him into the expedition fully warranted.

But even with a harrowing foe hiding within the mass of slimes hiding behind our torch's light, we continued into the darkness in hope of helping other adventurers that had remained during the shift.

Surprisingly there were actually multiple who hadn't even realized there hadn't been a shift, unlike other dungeons where there was at least some kind of a quake as a forewarning this one had shifted silently. Did the dungeon focus on that instead of developing monsters? That wouldn't make sense though, common dungeons shouldn't have enough sentience for that...

With the question silently swirling in my mind, we came about a daunting discovery; A corpse with flesh molten from bone. It seemed that slime apostle 1 was a more prolific threat than any of us had believed, or there were more which wasn't that surprising honestly since it literally had the number '1' in its name.

With the latter being agreed upon unanimously, we continued our trek along with our tagalong adventurers, only to warn our fellows of the new dangers hidden in this previously harmless sanctuary.

With light as a marker in the shadows, we quickly found more than a dozen adventurers, a good few choosing to be prudent and allowing us to escort them back to the exit of the plains, though I suspect that was most likely due to having enough slime nuclei.

What surprised me most was what came out of the mouth of an adventurer, bragging about how he had found a stairway; A way to the lower floors, an abyss that swallowed all the light that his torch produced.

Hearing this my fellows could not help but want to go to the stairwell, to enter the depths of the dungeon with greed in their hearts. But even then, I still held steadfast and made sure that the adventurers were brought to the staircase at the entrance of the slime plains.

But merely my descision nor my command could stop the others, and such I was forced to promise; 'We shall have the adventurer guide us to the stairwell after we have brought the others to the safety of the tunnels and explore further, that I promise.'

But suddenly, as one of them left for the exit, climbing the steps; A ball of acid hit them right in the head, a horrifying- And disgusting- Sight.

I quickly rallied the expedition team together, quickly processing where the acid was shot from and charging towards it in order to judge the evil slime apostle for its sins, finding nothing except a slime with a complete nuclei; Being killed before the kiddie mage had a chance to {inspect} it.

After such a dastardly ambush, utmost caution was adhered to as every slime in a radius of the stairs was reduced to a gooey mush.

Having made sure that the fear within the adventurer's hearts had been squashed, with the directions of a cooperative man who hadn't gotten his face melted off, we courageously went towards the lower floors that awaited sentient presence.

After a long travel, and multiple returns to the stairway which had just recently had a torch permanently placed at its foot by my command, The large cubic hole leading diagonally into the stone and rock revealing a staircase.

Just walking down would be idiotic at best, and since we had a fire mage on hand, I commanded for a fire ball to be shot down into the dark stairway; As to reveal its hidden secrets.

What I saw in the revealed darkness was a staircase with steps far too large, along with what seemed to be another stairway going up at the end. With no form of danger put before our eyes, I threw out caution and started to trek down- Yes, it was a trek, every single step was around the height of my shoulders; Going down isn't just having a bigger stride.

Standing at the bottom, another fire ball was shot up for clarity and it showed the same as before, stairs going up in a steep angle with steps far too large for average traversal. It's as if this dungeon is trying to make the most uninviting pathway ever. With my thoughts tinted with annoyance, I shook my head and steadfastly helped by weaker brethren up the hike. Especially the mage kid, since he was the only person with .

Though worrying new quickly reached my ear by means of an {Agile seeker}, that there was deep pit at the top. Words that could cause great distress in any expedition leader, though luckily, since it was still basically on the first floor, the trek back would at most take a quarter if we take our time- Though it would still be annoying to go back through the stairs.

With plans to save time and effort, I quickly commanded the pause of all ascension and brought a mage up to the top; Revealing a little cubic room with a hole in the middle, which was another abyss revealed by fireball... It was too deep for someone to climb back up with a reasonable amount of stats without a rope; It didn't even show anything properly due to how small the pit was.

I quickly said after clicking my tongue; "Everyone, it's a deep pit, get back down!"

Multiple audible groans could be heard, along with a few soft curses- Me included.
