Death of a dragon

Death of a dragon

Two piles of eggs lay on the dragon's corpse. The mother had lain her 75 eggs, but she didn't bother splitting it evenly over the whole dragon corpse before dying.

The eggs on the bottom soon turned into charcoal, their lifes not even beginning. The ashed eggs then made the pile slump down, egg after egg pushing into the remains soon were charred by the dragon's heat. However, the eggs on top of the pile were still safe. A dragon stored its magic energy inside its scales, not inside its flesh. At least this variant did.

This dragon had been a unique dragon while it was alive. It's the only lesser dragon who attempted to evolve into a higher being, an ice dragon. For the evolution he needed an everlasting ice shard, only found by ascending up to the 10th island. This dragon only barely survived, taking treasures left and right before escaping to the ground level.

There he laid in hibernation, plotting to burn the 10th island into ashes (or freeze to hell, as an ice dragon does), casually turning visitors into blinking piles of charcoal. It didn't have to fight with any of them - they were as weak and gullible as a baby.

At least, until the noisy chatter of 4 adventurers disturbed his slumber and killed him.

One of them was too strong for him. The adventurer felt like one of the monsters the dragon peeked at on the 10th island. Chattering and laughing as if it was no big deal to fight against a dragon. Fight a dragon! A puny human! That human monster boasted in front of everyone else how he'd slay the dragon with only a beginner sword.

And that was how the dragon died to a beginner sword.

But the dragon was still in the process of becoming an ice dragon, cooling its flesh enough for the eggs to not burn into dust on spot.

All these miraculous events coupled together, a near-ice dragon, overzealous adventurers who didn't take the flesh, and the dumbness calculated risks of a fly mother, enabled 3 eggs to survive at the end. 15 hours passed, and the corpse cooled down to a stand still. The ambient mana was still hanging in the air - the fly colony long gone. But the eggs were still there, and they would survive.

Slowly the three eggs cracked. Soon they would hatch, and a larvae would crawl out from each egg that so miraculously survived.
