[31] The Idiots Guide To Vile Magicks

[31] The Idiots Guide To Vile Magicks

“How am I alive?” asked the rat in actual coherent english.

[Milestone achieved, check Status for reward]

“Errr, I brought you back.” said Bobby, undistracting himself from the reward notification and getting over the fact that a rat could actually speak English rather than the incomprehensible rat language that he seemed to be able to understand.

“You… Brought me back? To life? From death?”

The rat sniffed its fur. “And why do I smell of pickles?”

Rho Dent stepped forwards to speak to her ancestor, “Oh great Wat-haf Wedon, we sought out the saviour to return you to us, your descendents now number in the hundred of millions.”

“No, no, no, you got my name wrong, it’s What’ve We Done.” He switched to the rat language and told her off before he clocked the other thing she’d said.

“Hundreds of millions? Taking into account the average rat litter size, and the age of maturity we should be way past that… I see then we’ve hit the natural limit for how many rats this city can sustain, how long’s it been?”

“You’ve been dead for just over a hundred years.”

Wat-haf Wedon sat still for a second and then began laughing, he continued to laugh until it developed a slightly awkward vibe. Then Gary walked in. “Is that a zombie rat, why is it laughing?”

“Ah another human,” said the greenish rat, making Gary take a step back when he realised he understood it. “I do appear to have been resurrected,” he turned to Bobby, “I don’t get how you performed this feat though, science can’t have developed that much while I was gone.”

“I used magic.”

“Hahaha I don’t believe you, well keep your secrets then, I’ll discover them eventually.”

“How are you this intelligent?” Bobby asked.

“In 2100, Cubecorp decided to try and endow human intelligence to animals, because while human experimentation is very frowned upon, your race has no qualms doing it on any other creature.

I am the first successful creature to have the full intelligence of humans via ultra compressed brain matter, machines were needed in my creation, hence none of my ancestors quite have my levels of intelligence.

By the time they realised they had succeeded in making a creature as intelligent as themselves I had already orchestrated my escape, and helped release all the current subjects where we fled into the slums known as the undercity.”

“Their levels of development are terrifying,” said Gary, “That must have been way before the megacorps completely took over all the governments, I was involved in the last few conflicts between those three and what was left of the old european union, there were weapons that shouldn’t exist involved in that war, I saw supersoldiers and guns that deleted matter. After winning the war they made all the survivors sign NDAs.”

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

The ferret left the group of rats and approached Wat-haf Wedon, looking at the small cubecorp tattoo visible on its side and revealing one of its own. “You’re the reason it was so hard to escape then?” It spoke in the rat language.

“Oh, another test subject,” said Wat-haf, switching languages again. “Are they still running the experiments?”

“No, I’m from the last batch, I only managed to get out because they got lazy about security when they were shutting it down.”

“They shut it down? How long ago?” Wat-haf asked quickly.

“It was about forty years ago, ferrets have a much longer natural life span than rats and the modifications they made to our genes to improve life span have gotten better over the years.”

Wat-haf went silent and looked slightly nervous, “If the experiments are over then they found out what they needed to know and no longer have a use for us.”

“What were they researching?” Bobby asked, feeling slightly tense himself.

“Consciousness.” The dead rat replied.

The whole group shuddered and went silent as they considered the implications. Supersoldiers, guns that delete matter and they have probably figured out how to make beings that are more intelligent than us? Bobby suddenly found himself fearing the megacorps. He would eventually have to face them himself on his current path, who knew what they were capable of if even mysteries rooted in magic like how consciousness works had been unpeeled by them.

He would need all the power he could get his hands on.

Feeling nervous about his future prospects, Bobby Brought up his status.
