As always, Jacob's expectations about what a "medieval" city is supposed to look like took a massive hit to the face when he passed through the 12 foot tall wooden gates that was placed in between the walls of the Lezatian Dukedom. Everything, as always, had been a culture shock for his poor mind, as he took in the sights, Jacob couldn't help but compare what he's seeing to modern cities- Sure, it's not really what he'd consider as "advanced" technology wise but the magic of the world more than made up for the lacking qualities that technology usually offered.
Cars and highways didn't exist here because the place is simply too small however, there are massive roads dedicated to merchant carts and carriages, horses and the like were here too, and they also have their own little roads where they're free to ride out however they want, Jacob compared it to the bicycle only parts he'd seen in minor streets back in the modern cities, and like the bicycle paths of the streets there, the horses that run through their dedicated paths are slow and careful to make sure that they don't run into or trample each other as they made their way through the city.
The traffic there, Jacob noted, is pretty fast compared to the streets where the people are just walking normally and a quick look at those parts led him to see various flea markets filled with stalls manned by people who are selling goods or services, in some area, he noted that he saw a brothel with women standing in front of it and in another, he saw a restaurant that's frequented by wealthy looking merchants.
A butcher shop here and there was spotted, tanneries stood right next to them. Places that sell clothes, both normal and enchanted were also found along the streets. Other buildings were also there but Jacob didn't really have the time or mood to look for anything other than what he thought is interesting and useful because apparently, word spreads pretty fast and now that he's entering the more crowded parts of the city, Jacob spotted a fearful face or two on the citizens walking alongside their wagon.
Shooting spells at a group of people and killing an armored man who begged to not be killed usually gets someone that sort of reaction but it's not like it was his fault back then, they basically asked to be shot with spells when they decided to start throwing stones at him and the man deserved what he did for charging at him with a sword, if Jacob didn't have any more Amp for his spells back then, then he'd be the one who's dead and it's not like the people here would be any more susceptible of being scared to the fact that the sword wielding man is also capable of stabbing them if he felt like it.
Though, Jacob assumed that the man can probably be dogpiled by the citizens if he ever decides to do that.
The same should apply to Jacob as well but then he's riding with the Knights of the Dukedom which means that the guards nearby would probably help him if that happened. Then again, from what he's hearing, the citizens think that Jacob is a criminal prisoner that they're bringing in instead of someone that the Kaxa and his group consider a friend.
"Where are we?" Asya suddenly asked and Jacob turned his head to face her to see that the girl now looked fine, though she was still laying right next to the stuff they had on the wagon, the tanned Warbeast hide she was covering herself with looked pretty heavy, it looked thick with all the fur but Asya didn't seem to mind the weight so Jacob assumed that it's probably pretty comfortable, especially since that she wrapped herself around it and is basically sleeping on and covering herself with it.
"I think we're close," Jacob answered noncomittaly, he didn't really know the layout of the city and none of the knights they are riding with told him about it. He can check whether or not they're near the Duke's mansion with [Locate] but he's not really gonna do it unless he needed to, there's a real chance that the house is warded with something that'll detect his spell, and since there's no point because they're gonna go there anyways, him casting [Locate] is basically a baseless risk that doesn't really get him anything other than a potential headache.
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
"Is that so?" Asya replied weakly, she tried to sit up but she quickly fell back down to the heaps of items around her, "ugh." She groaned and Jacob looked at her in concern, which she quickly waved off as she forced herself to sit up, when she did, she held her arm out and Jacob stared at her, "Water please?" She asked, pouting, "Usually you give people who just woke up from being sick water."
Jacob took out a small jar of water from his Port and handed it to her, Asya started gulping it down without caring about the fact that she was now staining the Warbeast hide she covered herself with, when she was done, she sighed in relief and smiled at him as she handed his jar back to him, "thanks," she said.
Jacob nodded, "Glad I could help."
Their walk continued until they basically reached the richer parts of the city, the crowd of people started to disappear and the stalls and markets got rarer and rarer until the streets were empty of them, there are still horses and other ridden animals around but nothing else other than that. The walk, by now, has gotten calm, just like the people surrounding them- he'd prefer this sort of thing, the noise and talks of everything back in the main parts of the city had been annoying, and the fact that the citizens kept bumping into the wagon and their Bastillion didn't help with matters either.
Slowly, the streets and the houses changed, sceneries started to look better and the walls started to look more luxurious, buildings started to possess balconies and the windows started to shrink, by now, they have left the market-esque parts of the district and have gotten into the parts where the houses and buildings are nothing more than personal homes for the people living here, the men and women here didn't need to sell stuff and turn their houses into a store because they already have money, either from saving it until their retirement or in a rare few cases, because they had connections to the merchants Guild who basically supports them financially until their interests and assets run dry.
Here, everything looked clean, polished, and well maintained. Things don't look as bleak and they don't smell as bad as back in the outer parts of the city, the canals that run on either side of the street and in front of the houses are basically covered with actual stone, keeping the smell trapped inside them. When Jacob asked about how the people here do maintenance when the canals get clogged, Asya was the one who decided to answer him.
"Fairly simple- strong acid." She replied, shrugging, "Alchemical acids basically make sure that any clogs get broken down, setting the canals free from any clogs and in the case of powerful stuff or even dangerous creatures, then artificially created slimes slither down there under the guidance of [Summoners], [Tamers], or [Rangers].
"So what happens if something hard to kill starts living down there?" Jacob asked as he stared at the spot where the canals are supposed to be, "What if a Dire Rat decides that they're gonna start living inside the canals?"
"First," Kaxa answered him, "Adult Dire Rats aren't small enough to fit inside these tunnels," he explained, "and second, if a juvenile Dire Rat thinks that living down there is a good idea, they're gonna start regretting their decision the moment that they get bathed in acid, it doesn't matter if it's a slime or alchemy, they will die."
"I get that." Jacob said, "I think."
So there wouldn't be an infestation because of the lack of space and even if there is, then the usual maintenance method that the city employs is more than enough to clean the infestation out. Jacob kept his eyes on the sides of the street, wondering what would happen if something that can resist both of those methods- like say, a magical mold or something, - decides to start living in their and making the people sick? What would the city do then?
Hell, a powerful [Wizard] can probably make something that can live down there and wait until he wants to conquer the city, what then?
Jacob shook his head and went back to staring at what's in front of him, Kaxa's back was as calm as ever and from what he can see, the man and his knights seemed powerful and competent enough that they can probably drive off anything dangerous enough to threaten the city.
