"Gran, Gon, Gin, Gan." Jacob half-whispered as he read through the names of the symbols of magic. Actually- Symbols of the Universe had been the name the book wanted him to call them. The book in front of him, the very same one he'd picked up earlier, sat still as he tapped the pages with a soft rhythm, he was alone now, and with no one to talk to, the library had gone back to being silent.
Stacy- or really, Asya had left after she suddenly declared that she wanted to go somewhere else to check on something. If Jacob remembered right, it was something about her family, which, now that the Dungeon is cleared for the month, were soon going to leave the village with their entourage. It made him curious as for who she actually was and he even reasoned that she was the daughter of the Duke or maybe a visiting noble but... that was not a thought that he wanted to entertain for the time being.
Dealing with the mayor was bad enough. Sheesh.
One day, just one day of him not dealing with politicians or their children when he's inside civilization, one day- He'd die a happy man.
Shaking such thoughts out of his head, Jacob went back to memorizing the symbols: Gran, or the symbol of the world, was just a circle with no special features, it had no veins nor did it look like a serpent- it was just that, a simple circle with no other features other than its blandness. Despite that though, its purpose is the complete opposite, and if someone were to tell him that the people of Fanna believed in something like "Don't judge a book by its cover" or some cheesy shit like that- he'd reply that he completely believed them.
Because... where to start?
Gran symbolized everything- from life, entropy, to a house - and because of its shape, it's made it easier for the natives to do so because to them, everything is a cycle and all will come to an end, with the only thing that's stopping things from ending being time, and even then, they also believed that because time itself exists, then it too must be somewhere and thus must also end.
Only for it to then start back up again, and thus repeating the cycle.
Meanwhile, the original where that somewhere is placed is called Dun or The Void, Null- whatever, if it's an all encompassing area of nothingness, then that would be Dun. The people of Fanna believe that Dun does not end, for it already happened- Jacob threw that train of thought away and just stuck to the simplest explanation that he can think of, 'Dun is a stable paradox.' and left it at that. Jacob thought that it is also worth noting that Dun is essentially the end of all things and the supposed world ending threats that the Gods faced back in the old world are nothing in the face of Dun.
Dun isn't really important though and since it didn't have a symbol, Jacob decided it was better to just forget about it and move on.
Which he will, continuing on with Gran, with the circle symbolizing the world itself, which means that with the right "Elements" one can create spells and in this book, there are three starter elements associated with the symbol: Gon, Gin, and Gan.
Gon, the triangle, is power, or what makes things move- wholly different from energy apparently, because those are fuel instead of the act of movement itself- which is different, I suppose. Comparatively, it should be the difference between the moon spinning around the Earth and the gravity that makes it so that it spins.
Both need each other, and without one, the other wouldn't happen.
Gin, meanwhile is surprisingly the square, and that's weird because Gin is technically the representation of anything physical, it's what makes things there and it's only weird to me because thanks to the crab, I guess my [Sharp-Bolt]s are now more physical and in possession of actual mass instead of just directed energy- which Jacob thinks was its original state before the two stabilizing Gins on either side of the inner circle.
If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
So if before his spell is just a very strong gust of wind that is sharp, now it has mass, making it an actual bullet.
He can't wait how that'll turn out against the crab next time they fight.
Lastly, Gan exists and it's... more or less complicated, it's basically the inner circle within the massive Gon that is his spell. And Jacob assumes Gan is suppose to represent inner layers, it is the foundation that makes things stable so that they can carry on to other things. Jacob sighed and looked away from the book, 'And that means the little tidbit that I was gonna say to Asya earlier would've made me look like a moron.'
Jacob went back to shoving his head into the book, 'The magic circle can only have three layers my ass.' He chastised himself.
When he was done reading, Jacob closed the book and walked out of the library, the rest of the book wasn't much, just a whole bunch of basic magic circles for things like [Warm] or [Splash] - things that he didn't really need to deal with at the moment. That aside, Jacob mentally pictured the magic circle for [Bolt] and with his new understanding of how it works, he managed to see what it's actually all about: The triangle-of-triangles at the center was more or less the core, making it so that the spell specializes in speed instead of, let's say mass- because if it was, then it would be a singular square with two circles at its center.
The inner layer of Gan within the magic circle also made some semblance of sense to him, just in a way that made it clear that his spell is now much more better than before. A mark of an upgrade of the spell itself.
Jacob found himself sitting on the fountain on instinct, he didn't really do much to get here, save for moving his legs and letting the rest of his body take control, he was too busy with analyzing his magic circles to really bother with direction at the moment. And it's not like he minded either, the place was nice, the air was calming, and the social atmosphere felt good even with all the stares of varying kinds being directed his way.
The admiration was good but envy and hate? Not so much- to really affect him so much that he'd mind, that is.
The clouds in the overcast skies started to slowly shift as Jacob spent his time under the fountain, it was interesting to see that the people of this village lived as normal as it can possibly get. Seeing them all happy and smiling like the modern-day people of earth was still a shock to him, but he mused that it also isn't as much as it could be.
Eventually, a vendor came strolling by with a wheeled cart full of stuff that Jacob found interesting long enough for him to get up and ask the man to stop so that he can buy some of the stuff, he'd paid all his prior silver to the merchant's guild earlier but luckily, paying the clerk at Bailey's Fur for only half earned him some silver and he couldn't have been happier that such a thing happened.
"I- I don't really think I can take this?" Says the vendor while staring at the silver. He pointed at his stall, I sell stuff in copper prices... a thousand of them-" his eyes moved over to the box with bits of copper coins on it, "- isn't exactly something that I have right now?"
"Nah, it's fine." Jacob tossed him the coin before tossing him four extra silvers, "I'll buy everything," Jacob called a passing kid, once the young boy got near, he bent down and whispered, "Hey, tell your friends that this guy's food is all free." When the kid turned around and got ready for a sprint, Jacob stopped him, "Actually, no, come get a few yourself first."
And the kid did so, Jacob watched silently on what kind of things the little guy wanted for himself: There were only six or so boxes on the cart, all of them fried, and between all of them, then kid picked these little orange balls that Jacob vaguely recognized as shrimp smell-wise, small but long fried fish dipped in flour and spices. Jacob stared at the "fish sticks" (as the vendor called them,) and thought that he didn't see the harm in picking that to satiate his curiosity on the street food of this village.
Food in hand, the kid ran off and eventually came back with a horde of children that Jacob had to manage so that those at the back didn't get left out because the others before them took too much food and also entertain with magic.
He tested out putting the symbol of Heat energy on his [Shield] then and the resulting spectacle made the kids stare wide-eyed. That didn't really stop them from getting near though, but a quick slap on the wrist from the vendor basically shut that down.
