Stacy had been fun, talking to her was insightful and Jacob, from her outlook on books and her opinion of them (and her, to put it bluntly, a staggering amount of book recommendations,) to her way of talking that gets him going to even her knowledge of magic, Stacy had been outright amazing and for all she was a scholar of Horos, that reflected on her being abundantly smart.
"I completely understand this..." She said, pointing at the [Shield] magic circle that Jacob drew on her notebook. Because for all his worth when it comes to talking about magic, he actually managed to eke out a conversation with her because he manage to visualize the magic circle for one of his spells and conveniently, he drew it out for her to inspect.
"...I think." Stacy added inaudibly.
"Sorry, I didn't catch you on that. Can you say it again?" Jacob asked as he snapped himself from the visual of [Shield]'s magic circle, "I-"
Stacy suddenly raised her hand as if she gave up, "Okay, I give up." She mirrored Jacob's thought on her sudden gesture, "I don't understand what this is. At all."
Jacob rubbed the back of his head and laughed. He paused for a second, thinking, wondering about how he can possibly pass himself off as the talented "prodigal mage" that the villagers know him as, another second pass and Jacob had to answer or else the confused stare of Stacy would turn into suspicion, "Okay." He managed to say with more confidence than he thought he could muster.
Reluctantly, he drew a circle, "You know what this is?" He asked, because he sure as hell doesn't.
He's just basing it off of the mental image that he he's seeing right now, one that belongs to [Sharp-Bolt] which after leveling up, had changed its magic circle drastically for some unknown reason, Jacob chalked it off to his encounter with the boss crab from the Dungeon and at this point, he's just confused as for whether or not this will happen again if he fights the boss next month.
Right now, the image for the spell's magic circle are three pairs of triangles condensed at the center of a circle, with another circle... circling the... triangle shaped trio of triangles, and then there's the two small squares on either side of the magic circle's interior, directly on top of the line of the inner circle's lines, overlapping with it in fact.
'Why is it so confusing?' Jacob thought with a frown a more horrific one replaced it- It's not gonna get worse when he knows about magic, will it?
Again, Stacy's words pushed him out of his thoughts, "Of course I do."
Jacob held back a smile, "Right, so what do think that the circle does that this hexagon doesn't?"
"Uh..." She frowned, "I- I know I've seen something like this before. More similar but... I don't know, I forgot about it-" Convenient Jacob thought, "- and for your question then obviously since the circle represents the world... that means that this Hexagon is a medium of sorts?"
The world and medium- welp, that didn't put him closer to the answer that he wanted but it's progress. After thinking about it, Jacob can see the semblance of the so called "World" on the magic circle, if his own theory is to go by, then the outermost magic circle should represent the planet and if that's the case then what are the triangles? The Squares? And then... then there's the other circle inside of the "world", a layer? Maybe?
"Right, well, yes- Hold on, let me get a magic book, what's the lowest one for this village?" Jacob said with a calm tone that betrayed all of the regret that he feels from not thinking about this sooner.
You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.
"It should be the one about the basic magic circles, nothing spell worthy, though." Jacob nodded and left to find said book, he managed to scry it out in some pristine looking aisle that have a lot of children's book and that pretty much sums up all the things that Jacob knows about magic: He's still a kid knowledge wise despite his apparent power.
He went back to Stacy's table and plopped himself on his original seat, directly in front of the girl. He put the book on the table, right next to the empty wild west one that Stacy had, then plopped it open, "Okay, so, let me see here..."
Jacob started flipping the pages, idly noting that he can easily read the words and letters which he already guessed as much, with the Gods just allowing everyone to speak the same language, even him, it wouldn't really get past him that anyone literate can understand the little scribbles that were this world's alphabet. Regardless, with him being able to read, Jacob managed to confirm one of the few functions that his Cognitive stat had given him and it was pretty good: Apparently, he can read pretty fast now.
Anyhow, with him being a fast reader, all it took for him to read the pages of the various symbols needed to make a magic circle is a few seconds and a word or two from Stacy, who seemed more than happy to allow him to do so.
"With Circle being the World-" Jacob pointed at the circle empty while simultaneously reading the page's contents, "- this means that the hexagon is energy." He explained, which in hindsight, should've been obvious, he is an [Energy Mage] after all. though not really know just what kind of energy it is.
Stacy's eyes widened and she snapped her fingers, "Oh. My. God." She said with a disbelieving tone, most of which is directed at herself, "That makes so much sense!" She threw her head down with a shout of- "Wait!" - and then when it went back up, a brown book was between her fingers, "This here is a book for second circle mages, and now I know why it's so frickin familiar!"
She slammed the book loudly and Jacob stared at the librarian, who seemed to be more than happy to let them be. "See her!?" Jacob turned his gaze back on Stacy, she was pointing at another Hexagon on her page, one that Jacob's pretty familiar with, "This is it!"
"That's exactly it." He nodded, finding no trouble with lying through his teeth.
"It's strange though, I don't see any of the symbols for the energies anywhere?" Stacy asked with a tilt of her head. She pressed her index finger against the paper, then she started to move it across the thing one by one, going from a series of green bubbles (which Jacob assumes either represents chemical or alchemical energy, he's honestly not sure which of both.) Three series of arrow lines pointing in two different directions, (Probably- definitely kinetic energy,) then another one in the form of fire (chemical, heat, whatever.) Then another series of arrow, this one pointing downward, (Gravity... energy?)
After Gravity the circle starts to go back up going from a muscular arm with an arrow that made it so that anyone reading would know that its flexing (mechanical energy, Jacob is sure of that.) Then upwards is a volcano (Geothermal,) and then finally, the sun, (Which is just Solar. Something that Jacob himself personally planned to invest on when he was going to grow old or some such.)
"Not for the time being, because all you need to do in order to fix that is something simple- add the corresponding symbol at the center of the magic circle and you'd be good!" Jacob's smile was genuine as he said that because he is currently cycling through the symbols on his own magic circle. Guess he can change it after all.
He really was getting sick of the yellow color.
"So you're telling me that you can have a [Shield] spell that can interchange its element?" Stacy replied with a skeptical eyebrow, "You know that it's pretty understandable for me if I suddenly said this to you and you don't believe me right?"
"Of course," Jacob said reassuringly.
"Then give me the benefit of the doubt," Stacy replied.
"And I will." He retorted. Then said, "By the way, just curious, where did your name come from?" That has been nagging him for quite some time now, because out of all the things that had been alien to him all this time, it wasn't the hair- they're definitely unique though, - the tone, or anything else that he found strange, it was the names- Those are what has set this world apart from his.
At least in his opinion.
"Well, It's from here," Stacy, if that's even her name, replied while tapping the book, "Stacy Garland." She said, "I think the name's pretty neat."
"So are you just gonna keep it?" Jacob asked.
"Yep! Not like anyone's gonna take it right? Anywho-" She raised her hand, "Name's Asya, nice to meet ya," She had a shit eating grin as she said that.
