Chapter 9: Fan Bing

**Xishan City Base.**

A middle-aged man with mutton chops sat at the head of the conference room, flanked by two attractive women. The women were feeding him grapes, and the man wore a satisfied, leisurely expression.

Just then, a soldier rushed in and reported, "Sir, the supply collection team has returned with a truckload of supplies!"

"Hahahaha! Excellent! Where’s the team leader? Bring him in—I want to commend him!"

The man smiled with satisfaction.

This man was none other than Meng Changkun, the leader of the Xishan City Base.

Before the apocalypse, Meng Changkun was merely a small-time officer in the army's logistics department, essentially a warehouse keeper.

But after the apocalypse began, as chaos consumed the world, a seed of ambition began to sprout in his heart.

He quickly rallied a few loyal followers, seized control of the arsenal, and called a military meeting.

After killing two older officers who opposed him, he solidified his position as the leader of the base.

"He’s just outside. I’ll go get him," the soldier said before turning and running out. Shortly after, a figure walked into the room.

It was Dong Liang.

"Greetings, Commander!" Dong Liang entered the conference room and, after glancing at Meng Changkun’s scene, grimaced slightly before bowing respectfully.

"No need to be so formal. Tell me, how difficult was the supply mission?"

"It was challenging, mainly because the truck makes too much noise, which easily attracts hordes of zombies. If that happens, things get tricky."

Dong Liang hesitated but ultimately reported the situation honestly to Meng Changkun. After all, gathering supplies was a life-or-death matter—not something to joke about.

Meng Changkun sat in his leather chair, stroking his stubble before saying, "Alright, here’s the plan. From now on, you’ll be in charge of all ten supply collection teams in the base."

"What?!"

Dong Liang was stunned. He had just been promoted without any warning—it was unbelievable!

"If you need anything, just let me know, and I’ll arrange what you need," Meng Changkun said, his small, sharp eyes glinting. He then waved dismissively, signaling that Dong Liang could leave if there was nothing else.

Dong Liang immediately understood, stood up, and walked out.

As soon as he left, the air in the conference room became heavy with a sense of debauchery.

...

The sky gradually darkened, and a few scattered stars appeared in the night sky.

Renault looked up at the red moon in the sky, feeling a bit puzzled.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

A blood moon?

It didn’t make sense. It was only the second day of the apocalypse—how could there already be a blood moon?

He shook his head, then went back to his room to sleep.

According to his memories from his previous life, the blood moon wouldn’t appear until the fifteenth day, and every time it appeared, a new evolution would take place!

High-level zombies, evolved beasts, and even plants would evolve!

The blood moon raised the overall strength of the entire Earth, giving humanity a chance to catch its breath.

Overnight, everything quietly began to change.

The next morning, Renault woke up.

He mentally called for a check-in, and the familiar notification sound echoed in his ears.

**Ding! Check-in successful. Congratulations to the host for obtaining an area radar!**

A radar?

Renault looked at the high-tech-looking circular device in his hand, and information instantly flooded his mind.

**Area Radar:** Detects the position of all living creatures within a 200-meter radius!

On the radar’s display, several red and green dots appeared.

Red represented danger—zombies—while green represented humans, the survivors.

"So that’s how it works. It looks like there’s someone living in the house next door?"

Renault was surprised. He had assumed there were no people nearby, but with the radar activated, he discovered he had a neighbor.

He got up and walked to the neighboring house, knocking gently on the door.

"Who is it?"

It was a male voice, cautious.

"I’m your neighbor from next door. Do you know little Alice?" Renault replied. If this was indeed a neighbor, the person most likely to be familiar with Alice would be a good way to break the ice.

**Creak.**

The metal security door opened a crack, revealing a chubby face. The man’s small eyes darted around nervously before he spoke to Renault:

"Come inside. It’s not safe out here."

Renault nodded and followed the chubby man into the house.

It was then that Renault noticed that the entire place was filled with military supplies.

The chubby man grabbed a knife from the coffee table, his eyes cold as he stared at Renault and questioned him:

"How do you know little Alice? From what I know about her family, you don’t seem to be part of the picture."

Huh?

What’s going on? Does he think I’m a bad guy?

Renault was briefly taken aback before explaining, "I passed by her house and saved her. Alice is still staying at her house."

"Damn, why didn’t you say so earlier? All that neighbor talk almost scared me to death."

The chubby man quickly sheathed the knife at his waist. His cold demeanor disappeared, replaced by the friendly manner of a sunny boy next door.

Through their conversation, Renault learned that the man’s name was Fan Bing.

He had loved military-related things since he was a child, but after the apocalypse began, he found himself terrified—even unable to kill a single zombie.

Renault found it hard to believe that he had just met a military-obsessed couch potato.

"Well, if that’s all, I’ll head back."

Renault stood to leave, but Fan Bing hesitated for a moment before standing up as well and saying, "Actually, I’ll come with you. I haven’t seen little Alice in a while."

And so, the two of them left the house together.

The sun was rising, casting a pale light over the ground.

"Whoa! There aren’t any zombies outside? I thought it was still the apocalypse."

"There are still zombies. Just don’t cling to my leg—they’re not nearby right now."

"Damn, that was a false alarm! Renault, can you please explain things all at once next time?"

Renault couldn’t help but chuckle at Fan Bing’s exaggerated behavior.

The two of them arrived at Alice’s house. Fan Bing looked around in confusion, scratching his head as he asked, "Is this really Alice’s house? It looks so different."

He wandered around the living room on the first floor, touching everything and exclaiming in amazement.

"Wow, this defense setup is incredible! It’s simple yet sturdy!"

"Renault, did you do all this?"

"Man, I’m really impressed now—you’re seriously hardcore!"

Renault shook his head and headed upstairs, where he found Guo Haoyu holding a spatula with a serious expression. In a low voice, Guo Haoyu said:

"Shh, this time I definitely heard something downstairs. Boss, just watch—I’ve got this."

"Don’t be rash. They’re friendly."

Renault scratched his head, feeling a bit relieved.

It was a good thing he stopped Guo Haoyu; otherwise, the two men downstairs might have ended up fighting each other.

"What? These are your friends?"

"No, they’re here to see Alice. Is she awake?"

"Yeah, she’s already up. Alice never sleeps in."

At that moment, little Alice walked out of her room in pink pajamas, looking sleepy-eyed and drowsy.
