Shifter's evolution Ch.2

Shifter's evolution Ch.2

Thrown away to an orphanage at birth Dallan was a mutated one who because of the difference in his parent's species was born blind and mute, he had black hair and light brown eyes while his ears had smattering of fur, feathers, and scales.

He was only three years old when they began lessons on hierarchy of the great lands, he knew he was at the bottom as not only is he predominantly a canine species but also a mutated one, without the ability to see he knew his fate was one of horrors.

Although children are all taken care of they are tested at the age of 13 for their potential and if their tribes have no use for them then they will be sent as a sacrifice to be consumed for others to advance, so he at the mere age of three was already set for death and once he turns thirteen his fate will be set but for now they will try and teach him to change forms so as to check which level of sacrifice he will be.

The higher grade a sacrifice is the more worth given to a tribe the following year and can raise entire tribes up, only criminals and one like him are done like this but some criminal children or even children of outcasts are sent for it making it so those up high have a guaranteed to receive at least one a year.

"One transforms by tapping into the Evo energy within one to change their form, the more forms you have the higher your evolution level."

No explanation on how to do that is given though that is because each person has their own means of doing so and teaching another your style may even cripple them then help them, meaning the explanation is basic and all they can do is let the talented show themselves.

It takes anywhere from one day to a year to change all based on one's ability to feel ones Evo energy though the more energy the faster, so quick transformation is an early sign of one's level.

The boy decided not to try in class to sense his so called energy as he knows if he is a talent more people will watch him to make sure he doesn't run before being sacrificed, he may be three years old but he is far ahead of the others in intelligence but his lack of ability to read hinders him from advancing further then the teachers lessons.

Their rooms are simply all carved into a cave that housed the orphans, and they all stayed huddled for warmth except for him who is excluded by the group, meaning he has a cubby in the cave to himself to train at.

Sitting in his cubby he just sits there trying to feel the so called energy and he does quickly as he had already felt it to an extent before this but simply ignored it due to being unsure of what it is, the teacher only said to direct the energy from one's mind to their body to transform and one will be able to control the transformation by imagining what they think their animal is but that is not possible for him.

So, he directs the energy through him but simply thinks of wanting to run fast, he feels a strange shift in his balance along with three new appendages on his body, he is uncertain of what creature he is, but it must be horrific.

He shifts back to elven by imagining returning to normal, it seems to work as he pats his body for any extra things.

He had sensed and transformed in a matter of minutes meaning he is a massive talent by the teacher but he will last till the end of the year before showing them to protect his chances to run away, though he wonders what creature he is as doesn't think dogs would grow him three new appendages as they are said to only have five but he has 7.

Laying down to rest as he feels quite exhausted, he doesn't realize that only legendary grade beings should be capable of transforming so quickly, and that is due to them sensing their energy earlier and so can shift as soon as the training begins.

The lessons continue on talking of the great beings above and about how to make different items for basic living such as ropes and traps along with basic hunting means, he can barely keep up with the traps and crafting but the hunting is beyond him though writing on the clay tablets is easy he has heard of paper and is joyed his tribe only uses carved writing or he may just not be able to at all.

Another night comes and he begins to shift into his animal form while out in the forest after sneaking out to use the restroom, he only needs to claim bowel problems for his long time to be overlooked as it is common problem for the orphans like him to fall ill.

He had shifted then immediately left the animal form due to worry of being discovered even if the other children usually wouldn't pay attention he would rather not have risked it, now shifting into the animal form he feels the change in the air around him and the scents flooding in along with the way the air fluttered his fur but the biggest thing he noticed now that he isn't worried about how to return to normal is the not quiet feel but feels like it.

The area around him is still but there like the water they are forced to bathe in for the celebration of sacrifice, he can feel small dips in the water around him like something is moving causing a ripple.

He tries and bite the small ripple to his right and feels blood enter his mouth as a squeak and scratching comes from whatever he has caught, he is unsure which animal it is, but he does know the energy in it is thin but as it bleeds out the thing, he senses decreases.

He decides to simply eat it without any cooking or even killing it as he fears the thing in it will be gone, he swallows it in one bite thanks to his mouth being able to slightly unhinge like he heard snakes could.

He felt full and decided to return for the night as a small wave of sleepiness comes over after the fresh meal, he is not used to being full so having a full stomach like this is new to him, so he shifts into elven form and returns to his hidey-hole to rest and digest the meal.

The next day the teacher continues to give us time to try and find our energy while also begin active hunting practice for us so we can contribute as soon as we turn thirteen, I focus on my senses and notice the sense of last night though there is much weaker when in my elven form then animal form and wonder why this is but can only learn on his own as he can't risk raising wariness for when he escaped.

He hunts small creatures at night to eat and with each passing time the small energy present in him increases in small amounts, he noticed that although he can sense some animals not all are felt by him.

Last night is a good example as a wolverine had attacked him and he only knew because of the sudden gust of air near him and him returning to elven form to get help, he wondered what the difference was between them but realized quickly what it is as all the elven people had it but only some animals did.

It was Evo energy that allowed him to sense what animals where evolved and which hadn't, although some Evo creatures changed in looks or color most don't simply becoming slightly faster, stronger, or better at hiding.

Others are only able to know if something has Evo energy when they eat it and from what he can feel in this entire forest versus what the hunters come back with he knows that they are unable to hunt the more hidden ones, meaning eating what you know has Evo energy like other elves is for the best to guarantee advancement.

He started only able to shift in two forms but over this past two months he now can shift himself into a partial form that let him sense like in animal form while still keeping elven shape.

The first person to transform did with a supposedly wolf shape making them able to become a hunter and even maybe be accepted into a higher tribe as a hunting wolf if he is good enough meaning his future is good if he can find enough Evo creatures to eat.

The fourth month comes with a change as I finally gain enough Evo energy from hunting small creatures to advance and with it my ability to sense Evolve, when in my animal form I can slightly see lines all over though unsure what they are for.

The sixth month comes and goes with many finally transforming with most being dogs with a few wolves though one becomes a bear and is told they will be able to attend the hunting academy in the higher tribes, hunting creatures at night and letting them digest through the day allows me to increase my energy quickly and soon I feel the so called evolution change once told by the teacher.

"An Evolution change is when the amount of Evo energy in the body reaches its max level and begins to either break down or adjust to the energy, if you adjust then you will rise in species even healing from traumatic wounds."

That night he spends not hunting but just lying in his animal form trying to calm down from the energy rushing in him as he advances, that night is the night he sees for the first time though it isn't like how others described it but rather like seeing lines of things outlined in front of him and unlike how others said it would be the only saw one angle not two.

Finally, he got the chance to see the outline of the creatures he caught and the trees he ran through, the wings on his back he could now make out and the tail behind him had him grinning as he got a hint of his own look.

The eight months came and went with him earning a half form along his partial form and runs around able to see in it though he can't see in his partial or elven form being able to do so even in two of four forms has him in joy, he wonders how his eyesight will improve in the future advancement.

The 11th month and the end of when one can usually transform comes and he remains not transforming making his tribe fear he may not be able to at all and if so then he can't be a sacrifice as the Evo energy is pretty much non-existent in him, the teacher tries to make him spend more time trying different methods such as running until he is exhausted and even once throwing him into the middle of the forest for the night to induce the transformation.

Only those able to transform are allowed in the orphanage so just as the end of the 12 month comes he puts into action his plan to change but not into his true animal form, the more Evo energy one has the more control on their form they have and so when he transforms for the 'first' time he only looks like a normal wolf with some scales and feathers on him.

He now has till the age of thirteen to figure out how he wishes to survive from now on, and he already figures he will simply hunt on his own and use caves but until he is powerful enough to deal with the truly dangerous creatures staying in the tribe is for the best.

Many sighs in relief when they see the form and even seem happy at the fact, he is a wolf as it would seem like they are actually giving a better sacrifice then they actually are, attention tappers off and the other ignore him once more.

Hunting at night in his animal form he learns how to control his body and energy in many ways like to sneak better and to enhance his speed and strength like the animals around him do, he does this by copying the way their energy flows and implementing it himself though it took several times and training himself to adjust to the ever change in his body.

Eating and napping while memorizing what is done in class so as to try it out himself in the forest when he is alone in half form making use of his semi-ability to see, he makes his first set of clothes and wicker baskets and grins in success at his first catch in a trap.

Tracking through scent in this form as well as learning how to identify things when he can't see is where his further training comes in as he teaches himself how to hide more features like the scales and feathers on his ears and wolf form.

He needs to be able to blend in and disappear in any cities he may need to pass through to go west to the higher lands where the more dangerous and higher grade Evo creatures are, he has heard from passer-byes that one can make a good living on even the weakest creatures there if they can hunt them and so he has decided to head there to live after running away.

Besides there if someone spends months in the forest most won't bat an eye and just assume they are trap hunters or trying for higher game.

He also learns that the things he has hunted and ate wasn't necessarily good as he learns in class that the first thing he ate was a poison rat thanks to the species having a unique energy feel allowing him to identify it when the teacher showed it in class as a non-editable creature, he learns through this that he is immune to most things that are poisonous and even when being bit by venomous snakes he is perfectly fine.

It is like he is immune to most things which means his options for survival is much wider than others, he can sell the game others want and eat what they can't.

He learns what others eat and how as most creatures aren't meant to be edible unless cooked which is why only the things with large amounts of energy can even be consumed for it by others, he realizes his immunity to most things gives him the biggest gain then even his ability to sense energy better than others.

Learning where he is different and how to hide those differences is also how he learns he supposedly has a third eye in wolf form though the tribe passed this over as the main reason I am blind, I figure this is why I can see in the half and animal form. He learns to hide it as it is truly the biggest give away to who he is and will be something they seek when he runs away, after all a sacrifice running isn't unheard of but they hunt them down and give them painful deaths when found.

Looking like a black furred normal wolf was easy though he had to learn how to act like he can see in this form, he learns he can replace certain parts if they are similar and so the third eye replaces his left eye.

His third eye is pure white making it seem like he is blind in it, funny since his other eyes are brown and are the ones he is actually blind in, but he can claim the reason he is at the mountain is that he can't find work elsewhere due to being half blind and so came there despite the risk.

He is now 8 years old and after eating for the night returns to the village to sleep for a bit then attend classes when he sees a massive ripple a bit away indicating a higher grade Evo animal but it is now heading in the direction of the orphans cave and he now has to make a decision kill it or let it go and pretend to be dead, he looks to the bag he carries with him every time he comes out hunting with a months worth of supplies in case of emergencies and thinks of the fate of the other kids and decides that although they ignore him he won't leave them to die for it.

He runs to the village and screams of a large thing running into the cave and he escaped and ran this way, the tribesmen immediately come running and I am told to wait back.

By daybreak all but two of the children are safe and put into the backup housing around the tribe for in case of emergencies like this one, but many people are now looking at him and whispering as word spread, I was in the forest for release purposes and somehow knew the creature was coming nearly ten minutes before it did or many more children would be dead.

In large tribes it is known some are blessed with the ability to predict attacks and help the tribes prosper and now whispers spread if that may be why I am blind, some even mention the third eye may even be related to it and so I am put with the chief for the following days and am not allowed to go out alone even for relief.

People begin to help me by pointing me in directions and even giving me small pieces of Evo meat from the creature we hunted, two weeks and the rapid shift in position for me is clear as day but so is the fear.

I request to go on the next hunt with the men to help them find good food to return with and they seem to be happy with this and it is a good thing for them as if they can send enough Evo energy meat they don't need to send a sacrifice, it is better to wait your time then run at the earliest convenience hunting has long taught me that so I will wait till my prey's guard is down before making my dash to freedom.

They keep close eyes on me during the hunt and I point to different areas with the higher-grade Evo creatures with only two being poisonous but can be cooked for some energy, we come home with five Evo energy creatures, and many are celebrating the lack of need to sacrifice.

When the official returns during the beginning of winter we are all bathed and dressed to greet him but instead of in the back away from prying eyes as a humiliation I am put in front next to the hunters.

The man comes in while animal form and it is a bird form with four wings and two sharp talons nearly the size of a wolf making it clear why it was sent to pick up the sacrifice, there is around fifteen animals all with high Evo energy in them for the sacrifice but many of our own people have been able to eat the weaker ones we caught to grow.

The tribe is flourishing and nearly twice the normal amount is now pregnant with child, usually if two are pregnant it is good but now five are with child and we think a sixth one may be, but it is still too early to be sure.

The man who comes transforms and looks at the sacrifice prepared as though making sure it is what it should be and after taking a small bite out of each, he picks it up and leaves making us all sigh in relief, we now don't need to send a living sacrifice to fill quota.

Winter is filled with many happy and not hungry as the food and grain saved over the spring and summer was enough to let none go without at least one meal a day and with us doing little more then sleeping and waiting for spring no more then that is needed to keep us healthy and going, as spring comes and the ice and snow melt away my 9th birthday passes with the others as the cubs of the tribe come to greet the world.

The women we thought may be pregnant was and so six new faces enter the tribe and talks of building more homes and setting better defenses comes with our newfound prosperity, we hunt two high grade creatures and as it is too early to be viable as sacrifices, we feast on ourselves and nearly half the tribe advances into three forms that night.

We hunt the weaker ones so as to save the better ones for near the sacrifice and like this the whole tribe is happy and the younglings even have some of our Evo meat while the mothers have some and the milk produced has trace amounts for the children they feed meaning they will have even more potential when learning, the enhancement even eating small amounts of Evo meat over long time is starting to truly show itself now.

The spring fades to summer and we begin to dry our meat, vegetables, and fruits for winter and the cubs stand soon making many happy at their quick progress.

We prosper but the darkness creeping is also there.
