Chapter 24

After petting Dog for a few more seconds, Denise walked over with a warm smile and embraced me. “So what’s the news?" she asked. I assume you found Joe OK."

“Yeah I sure did,” I said. I have a couple drone projects for our budding artificers too, patting the pack. I want to run back to our house and see if our emergency supplies are still there. I’ll need the boys' help getting through everything I piled up against the cabinets. Then I want to take them out to my mom’s and let them start trying to repair these drones if possible. We would very much like to get eyes on that place and see if anyone is actually living there.”

“I don’t know how I feel about the kids being out there in the middle of nowhere,” Denise said.

“It’s not in the middle of nowhere baby, and I actually think it’s probably safer out there than in the city." Alex said they didn’t even see very many people causing problems after the first day. Besides, Alex and Frank are there. Frank is a level six warrior and Alex is a level five Druid. I know you still don’t have the same understanding of class concepts as we have, but trust me when I tell you that Alex is powerful. I’d choose a Druid over a warrior any day. And don’t get me wrong, Frank is no slouch. He was given the Warrior class for a reason.”

“I know," she replied. I just don’t like any of this and it worries me.”

“I don’t like it any more than you do,” I replied.

Denise slapped my arm and said, "You are full of it." You’re having the time of your life right now. I remember you sending me some meme that said something about a zombie apocalypse and pretending not to be excited. Well here’s the apocalypse and what’s more, it’s zombie free. So you can stop pretending.”

I chuckled, “ok fine, I am a little excited. I mean I have an epic sword and all. But I do understand the dangers and worry about the children. But, hell, should we even call them children anymore? The boys are fifteen and seventeen, close to being adults, especially now that society is collapsing. And both of them are proficient with firearms. I saw to that myself by taking them to the range and letting them shoot everything I own. Mike and Isadora are both twenty-one and Alex is nineteen. We can’t keep them locked up in the house anymore. We need them to get stronger, especially now.”

“I’ve been thinking about Mike a lot," she said. "Do you think he’s OK?" she asked looking into my eyes pleadingly.

“I’m sure he’s fine," I replied. He has some of the best training money can buy. Don’t forget he’s stationed with a Special Forces unit.”

“But he’s not Special Forces," she retorted. "It's not the same thing.”

“No it’s not," I said. But it’s still pretty good. I remember when I was stationed at Bragg, we had a number of projects we completed for the 3rd and 7th Special Forces group. This was back when Bragg had two groups. But while we worked for them, we were allowed to train at some of their ranges with them. Although the training was very minimal, it was very informative as well. Now think, He has been stationed with them every day since graduating from jump school. And… let’s not forget that one of the prerequisites for his job was completion of Military Police school first. If I know Mike, we’re going to see him very soon.”

“There’s another thing,” I added.

“What’s that?" Denise asked worriedly.

“We need to acquire more weapons and ammo, I said. And I think I know where to get them.”

“And where exactly would that be?" she asked.

“We’re planning to raid the PD tonight, I said.”

“You’re going to WHAT?" She exclaimed.

I ran her through the discussion I had with Joe and the guys and the plans we had made. Just like Johnny, she was apprehensive about it. However, to her credit, she saw the wisdom in the plan before I even finished explaining. “So when the guys get here tonight, I finished, can you cook us up some of that love? That buff of yours is going to come in handy.”

“I guess what they say is true then, she scoffed. The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”
