Turn 79: The Rise Of Machines And Medicine

Turn 79: The Rise Of Machines And Medicine

--- Maya ---

After her recent excursion to Anavi’s fight club, and her attempt at best the Bloody Ballroom, Maya was forced to once more confront the fact that she needed more power. And not the Dakka kind of power, but the energy generate by her COMP’s Generator() program to fuel all of her other programs.

Which is why she spent several after school’s tweaking the various variables of her program in the hopes of finding something that would generate more power for her to use and decrease how many days it took for her COMP to recharge.

(The sooner we get this done, the more heroic things we can get done in a month.) She told herself for the umptenth time, as she forced herself to continue to focus on a project she was quickly becoming bored with.

(Ugh, there has to be a better way of doing this…) Her inner Madness whined, more fed up with the monotony than any other part of her. (That’s because I’m the fun one and this is not fun!)

“It really isn’t…” She couldn’t help but agree, after all there were only so many ways to make a program breaking reality to break it even further in a singular direction. “But we need to get this done, so unless you’ve got something even more important to Mask work than upping our energy we’re stuck working on this.”

(Mm, give me a second… I’ve got something just. Let. Me. Remember…) Her inner passion told her, before reminding her that, (The healing herbs are done and that means we can build a med-bay!)

She paused for a moment, before opening a little monitoring program for her bio-pods and finding that, yes, her healing herbs were in fact done growing. Meaning that she did have a different project equally as important -(Actually more so considering how many bruises I’ve still got.)- to her Mask career than the tedious work she’d been chipping away at for three days.

(Salvation is at hand!)

Finally having an excuse to slack-

(Ahem.)

(I mean…)

Finally having a decent number of Healing Herbs stocked up and stored away, Maya decided that it was finally time to work on something that really fit with her lair’s whole hospital motif. (Actually, does it count as a motif when our base is inside of an actual hospital?)

(Eh, the hospital is abandoned so it’s not really a hospital anymore is it?)

(It’s a debatable point on the matter.) Her inner logic admitted.

(Fair enough.)

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

(Anyway…)

After several hours of work and shifting through the various hospital tools her DM’s had found while cleaning the hospital up, she put together a room that with a bit of M.A.D. mag- (Hiss!) (Hiss?) (Hiss hiss!)- a bit of M.A.D. science… would let her heal her various aches and bruises. Or barring that allow them to heal far easier than they would if left alone, as well as actually converting the various medical supplies she’d built up into a more usable form.

“That should do it.” She nodded, dusting her hands off and looking around the room that was a fairly solid mimicry of a doctor’s office… if only because it actually was a doctor’s office at one point. “Hey, I cleaned it up.”

(You had the LCMs clean it up.)

“Well, I moved the stuff that was too heavy for them!”

(You tried to make the DMs do that, but then remembered they aren’t here right now.)

“Not helping!” She told herself.

(What are you talking about? I’m clearly helping you win this argument… I’m just also guaranteeing that the other you loses it.)

“If you don’t shut up I’m going to lose it!”

(Isn’t it a bit late for that?)

“Hiss!!!”

Having used her club activities as an excuse for why she wasn’t heading home after school when her mamá picked her up, she found herself being dropped off at the M.A.D. club. Something she couldn’t exactly argue against given her mother’s… situation.

After making her way inside -since her mother didn’t want to leave until she was safely inside. (Helicopter parent.) (Don’t.)- she found the idea of simply walking back out once her mamá was gone to be a little too awkward for her. (But at the same time I don’t feel like settling in here either…)

She had plans for what she wanted to work on and delaying them was giving her a bit of a headache. Especially since it felt like she was on the verge of discovering something or making a breakthrough of some kind given how excited the whispers were being. (Need something to distract me…)

(Mm… Ooh! Did we ever find out what was up with the whole robot uprising thing?)

“No… we did not.” She realized, careful avoiding Carol who she was fairly certain was the reason why Kim refused to elaborate on ‘the incident’.

Which is why instead she made her way to Melvin figuring that her -(Does he count as our mentor here? We spend a lot of time learning from him?) (Sure why not?)- her mentor would be able to tell her something about what she was labeling a fairly concerning incident.

“Oh, Maya, what’s up?” Melvin asked as she knocked on the door to his work space. “Don’t think we’ve got a lesson today?”

“We don’t but I was kind of hoping you could answer a question for me.” She admitted.

“Sure if I know the answer.” Melvin shrugged, before resuming his work.

“So… What can you tell me about this whole robot uprising thing?”

Melvin froze for a moment before coughing into his hand. “Uh, is Carol around?”

“No.” She frowned.

“Right, well uh, that is a bit of a story… so, uh, help me wrap this up and when you ask afterwards I’ll tell you, okay?”

“Okay…” She nodded, feeling like she was missing something but not entirely sure what it was. “What exactly are we working on?”

“Nothing too complicated, just need some help rewiring these circuits before putting them back into their casing.” Melvin explained. “Easy stuff, just a bit mindless and boring.”

“Fine…” She sighed, before getting to work.

Work that was in fact extremely boring and mind numbing, enough so that at some point she just checked out and let her whispers take over more or less as she spent the next few hours taking apart and putting back together the various devices her mentor put in front of her.

“Alright, think we’re done here for today.” Melvin eventually yawned out as he stretched his arms out. “Good job, kid. You mind cleaning up while I drop these off with Carol. You can head home when you’re done.”

“Yeah, sure.” She waved him off as he left their workspace for the umptenth time to drop off the various projects they’d been working on.

Once she was done, she spent another hour waiting for Melvin to come back, before she finally realized, “That motherfucker ditched us!”
