Sudden Summoning

Sudden Summoning

Henry was just having his breakfast before starting his journey to work. Nothing unusual about his day. Chowing down his cereal when he suddenly felt a bit funny in his body. Something started shredding inside him and then Henry felt nothing.

The Overuniverse sentience was not in a good mood. It existed to monitor the other universes and take appropiate action when needed. There had been increasing unauthorised traffic lately. Cultists. Summoning things. All well and dandy when they were summoning the right way and the right things, but this ritual that had attracted his attention was scribed wrong. Instead of trying to summon a hellhound from the hell dimension/universe, it had summoned a human from the human prime universe. Which had a soul that wasn't protected by this type of transfer. As a result in his universe buffer, he had a nearly destroyed soul. Having a inspired thought, and looping the ritual and changed the creature summoned to a normal creature without a soul and therefore able to be transported without incident. Let them deal with that! Also as an afterthought the soul was popped into a soul recovery program and it was time to move onto the next problem. AAAArrrrgghhh. Damn cultists again.

Meanwhile, in another universe.....

'The summoning had worked' thought the head cultist 'at last the hard work he had put in, from making this cult grow, to putting together this ritual from hard resarch and countless hours work. He would command the hellhound to terrorise the town nearby an-'

In the circle sat a very unhappy hippo. It had been grazing away, in a pleasant deep puddle, just enjoying the day. Now it was hot and dry. PAYBACK MUST BE DONE!

"That not a hellhou-" one of the cultists began before the hippo squashed him dead against the wall. The other cultists were then aware they were trapped in a small room with a very angry large creature that could somehow breech the circle. But the demon creature shouldn't have been able to breach the circle! it was bound! The hippo however, did not come from the Hell universe/dimension and therefore did not care about the circle. Hence the first lesson about summoning. Always make sure what you are doing is correct, or it will end badly.

The Oververse sentience was feeling much better after having dealt with the bulk of his neverending work backlog. A beeping reminder was going off about something in the back of his mind and he suddenly remembered about the soul recovery program that he started 6000 years ago. Evidently, it was finished and a soul was recovered. The Overvese sentience was excited by this, as it would be the first person he would speak to apart from his contemporaries in a very, very long time. Aeons in fact.

Henry came to and was troubled by the fact that he couldnt feel his body or seemingly open his eyes. A stroke perhaps? This was not good. In fact it was awful, but for some reason , Henry couldn't bring himself to panic. All of a sudden a voice spoke out of nowhere. " I am very sorry to have to tell you this, but due to a mistake made in the universe, you as you were, no longer exist. There are options I can offer, including being reborn elsewhere or even as something different. a magic using elf perhaps? I heard this is a popular daydream for a lot of mortals. or perha-" Henry then spoke, focusing on something he felt rather important to know.

"What do you mean I no longer exist? Where am I? How long have I been like this?" The Overuniverse sentience suddenly found itself at a loss. It had never had to explain this kind of thing before and decided to recite the event log that it had in it memory concerning the soul. Henry was hit hard by this. However he decided to ask a question. That being, "Does this sort of thing happen often?" The Overuniverse sentience reassured him that what had happened was a fluke, that had been corrected so that even if someone enacted the same ritual again, the result would be the response that it had enacted.

Meanwhile in another universe.......

If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

The king was looking forward to this afternoon. Having come to power after his father died unexpectedly. (having a knife rammed into your heart tends to do that in most universes.) He had come to the crown and proceeded to drain the treasury dry with his debauchary. To carry this on, he then levied outrageous levels of tax among his subjects, which was not well recieved. An unpopular king, yet clever enough to hire competent hirelings meant that his kingdom ran well, if unhappily for most people. He strolled into the room where his court wizard was setting up a ritual that had been discovered from long ago. It was reputed to summon a hellhound. The king was rather looking forward to this new experience. The room this was being enacted in was a bit small, but should be ok since hellhound were quite smallish and the only people here was him and the court wizard. The ritual was enacted and the king held his breath as a large..... grey creature was standing there? What was it? As he opened his mouth to ask his court wizard the creature stepped out of the circle and rammed the king into the wall. As he laid there dying his last thought was this was impossible as the circle was meant to contain the demon. The hippo very unhappy, proceeded to wreck the palace. The second lesson about summoning, is to always make sure that you are prepared for the unexpected.

Henry digested this news and was silent for a while, enabling the Overuniverse sentience to start catching up his backlog. Bloody hell, someone had used that ritual again, good thing it had changed that. It diverted it's attention back as Henry spoke "What are you up to? I can sort of hear you working away?" The Overuniverse sentience then explained his job, and how it seemed that lately, as more and more civilizations saw the light of day, the busier it seemed to get. Henry digested this and asked another question. "Why don't you have localised troubleshooters to reduce your workload?" The Overuniverse Sentience explained that in fact the other universes had a main god who was meant to do that, but they were getting overwhelmed by the volume as well. "Well, why don't you put people in under them, to focus on regions in the universe?" The Overuniverse sentience explained that it had in fact done this by creating gods for world, but unfortunately due to the programming on this, those gods had ended up being influenced by those who worshipped them and as a result had become unreliable. However, it had not thought about regions. This had possibilites, as since there would be multiple worlds involved it might be that a god of that level could work. It could only conclude the reason it had not thought of this before was due to the workload. Henry then said, "Well, is there anyway I can help you?" The Overuniverse sentience thought about this, knew the human could not take on the postion of this as is, and needed experience anyway. However there was a way forward that could be developed. In the dark, Henry could suddenly see a box with writing in it that said.

Quest Offered

A way forward to create a regional god has been thought of. However this has not been done before

The soul known as Henry is offered the chance to test this way forward and become a regional god. If accepted, he will be made a demigod and sent to a universe to to be trained and talents developed. Further quests will be offered after training concluded, based on the results of said training. This quest will remain foremost in quest log and change accordingly as needed.

Reward - variable

failure conditions - if given up or way is proven false.

Henry looked upon this and signalled agreement. The Overuniverse sentience rejoiced and explanied how this was to be acomplished. First, the change to demigod would be done, with choices to be made by Henry. Then he would be sent to the universe chosen and start his training. It wished him every success, and hopefully they would communicate again other then the quest log in a few thousand years or centuries or whatever. Henry then braced himself for what was to come.
