Volume 0: Chapter 5- Fate

Desolai carried her scythe by her side, as customary for Shinigami. So when Nur asked for it she was a little surprised.

“Why would you need it?” She asked. The tone of her voice seemed rather different from the tone she used. It was meek and gentle instead of cold and commanding.

“You will find out in just a second.” Nur grabbed the scythe from Desolai’s hands. She was surprised by his bold action, yet there was nothing she could do against him. He was out of her control, and interference with uncertain fate. Unlike normal people, his time of death was uncertain, so she effectively held no power over him other than the supposed authority as his boss. Yet at this moment it seemed as if she wasn’t in control of him at all.

He took the scythe and slashed with it at the chain on Asul Jem’s neck. When he slashed he concentrated on making the blade tangible. This allowed him to cut the chain. The scythe was incredibly sharp. It cleaved through chains as if they were butter. No longer held by the chain on her neck, Asul Jem’s body fell on the ground. She was in crawling position, with her body so weak, barely able to move herself.

“Nur, wait, Shinigami can’t interfere!” Desolai pleaded.

“Can’t or won’t?” Nur asked. He no longer seemed like a meek servant, something seemed to awaken a strong urge within him.

“I can’t.” Desolai replied.

“I see. So you, a Shinigami, can’t interfere, physically speaking, right?”

Desolai nodded.

“Then it’s a good thing I am not a Shinigami!” He boldly declared with a thumb on his chest.

“But the death is the fate that awaits her; you can’t just change it…”

“Why not?”

“Fate is set in stone.”

“Then I will take that stone and crack it. Then throw the pieces into the river.” Nur said with a bold expression.

The true nature of interference, having no fate set in stone. It was already strange that he exists outside of fate, but if he interferes with fate of another, the consequences were unpredictable.

“You can’t be serious…” She watched as he took weakened Asul Jem and lifted her up. He put her on his back. She was barely conscious, with eyes only able to focus on the face of someone lifting her up. ‘Another torturer? No he seems different…’ Her consciousness was fuzzy. While her eyes were unfocused she was hearing bits of the conversation that didn’t make much sense.

“I am completely serious.” Nur said while carrying the injured Asul Jem. “By the way, can the people in the building see her if I am carrying her?”

“No, once someone within Shinigami dimension touches outside object, the outside object enters the dimension as well. What do you intend to do with her?”

“I will give her a chance.” Nur replied. He was no longer acting angry, instead determined and set on his goal.

Desolai was at loss for words. She knew that as interference Nur would have an unusual effect upon anything he interacts with, but she didn’t think the effects would be so apparent so soon. And the worst part was she had no power to stop him.
