A Wendigo

“But I am more than willing to bet that it's probably a… Wendigo.”

“Wendigo?”

“Yeah a Wendigo,” Xavier replies with a nod.

Klaus frowned, “But aren't those mythical creatures rooted in the Algonquin Folklore, primarily associated with the indigenous people of the northern forests of the Atlantic Coast and the Great Lakes region of the universal states.”

“Yeah.” Xavier nods in affirmation. “Everything you said so far is quite correct. Well, of course apart from the fact that they are no myth.”

“Alright,” Klaus shifted, a hint of skepticism still in his voice. "Let's say Wendigos are real. What do we have on them?

Xavier exhaled, eyes narrowing.

“Cannibals. Humans who result to cannibalism in extreme conditions, and well the hunger kinda warps them into something monstrous.”

Klaus listened attentively, the lightness in his expression gone.

“Cannibalism… and it has to take place in a frosty region?”

“Exactly. The cold somehow… facilitates the change.” A kinda further supernatural transmutation.

Klaus's eyes drifted, lost in thought.

“I've heard this before…" He stood suddenly, striding across the room.

“Dad. He talked about them.”

He yanked his father's old journal from the shelf and flipped through the pages with frantic precision, until he found the entry.

-I saw traces that made me believe I was after a Wendigo.-

Just like I thought. “It's real. Dad hunted one.” Klaus exhaled sharply.

The memories slowly came flooding in. He remembered that day with great clarity.

When he was close to clocking seven.

He heard his dad talking about hunting a Wendigo.

It could be said that he started hunting at a young age.

Young as in… when others his age would be climbing and jumping, crying for sweets and playing games around. He was both glad and well...not that glad about it.

He let out a melancholic sigh before dropping the journal.

Xavier felt a cold chill creep down his spine. If Dad hunted one. Only the gods know just how dangerous it's. His thoughts trailed off, dread settling within him.

Klaus let the journal fall shut. He let out a breath, tension think in the air. The dimly lit room casting endless shadows on the walls.

“Alright, guess we already know what we are after.” Klaus finally spoke up after a long slightly uncomfortable silence.

“Yeah. Now we just have to confirm if we are really after a Wendigo.” Xavier's voice was quiet, the weight of the task sinking in.

For one he really hoped they weren't dealing with a Wendigo. And on there other hand...if they were really dealing with a Wendigo just as he had suspected. He hoped he got enough information on it. Just enough to gank it.

The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

Klaus ran a hand through his hair, sighing.

“Alright. We'll figure it out tomorrow.”

“Right now, I am crazy famished.” He added, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.

Xavier chuckled lightly, but his mind remained focused.

“I think we should be careful if this is a Wendigo.”

He finally spoke after a few seconds of constantly rubbing his temples.

Klaus, who already removed the upper part of his cloth, with his six well-defined parks in full display and was busy caressing it, suddenly raised his head.

“Uh… and why do you say that?”

“Well, the lore says they are great at mimicry.

So…"

“Hmm…indeed, this might prove to be more difficult than I previously thought.” More difficult.

Klaus muttered, eliciting a nod from Xavier.

“But well, how hard can it possibly be? Its weakness is something we have in abundance.”

“Fire?”

Xavier questioned with a raised brow.

“Yeah.”

Klaus nods in affirmation. "And instead of using silver bullets, fire seems to be the best option.”

“Probably,”

Xavier muttered with a nod of his head.

“No…not likely, definitely.”

Klaus chuckled lightly, "We just have to get it to an open area, and then… it's done for.” Klaus snapped his hands together, perhaps to pass across the intended information.

Xavier didn't respond but his mind was racing.

Klaus always acts like it's no big deal…but I know him. He's just hiding…it…"

He sighed lightly, a light smile crept up his face as he shut the laptop.

Klaus's stomach grumbled in dissatisfaction.

“Hey, Xavier, can we get something to eat now? This stomach of mine isn't really in a good state.”

“Yeah obviously.”

Xavier chuckled lightly, eliciting a light laughter from Klaus.

“Alright, so is it the same old burger?”

Xavier questioned, just a step away from leaving the room.

“Of course, they are the best after all.”

Of course they are.

Xavier lampooned inwardly.

…Who in their right senses would believe bacon burger to be the best food across the world?

That's just…" Xavier allowed his thoughts to trail off for a second there.

Lightly shaking his head. He proceeded to open the door.

“So…two or three?”

Xavier questioned, considering the fact that they had been on the road for close to two days.

“Um…Yeah, three should suffice.”

Klaus replied with a subtle nod, before collapsing on the bed.

Xavier smiles, closing the door while humming a song.

Sung by a famous rock star back on Earth.

A few minutes easily clocked by, probably around ten minutes.

Xavier finally got back, opening the door before slowly closing it.

He handed the burger to Klaus, who hurriedly jacked it away from his hands.

“Alright, alright, take it easy. No one is taking it away from you.”

Xavier shook his head, leaving Klaus to battle with his burger.

“Aah.”

Klaus let out a light exhalation, his voice a mix of relief and pleasure.

“Now… this is what I'm talking about.”

Xavier simply shook his head with a smile.

He placed the bento box on the table, then sat down on the chair, before slowly digging into the salad.

“You still into salad?”

Klaus questioned, his gaze lingering on his brother for a few seconds.

“Yeah… why do you ask?”

Xavier was about to speak but suddenly stopped halfway, subtly nodding in affirmation.

Clearly paying attention to table manners/ eating etiquette.

But the same couldn't be said for Klaus, who continued speaking while having a load of burger, crispy bacon, and cheese in his mouth.

“Well…nothing.”

“Oh-okay.”

Xavier simply shrugged it off. Who knows what's going on in that mind of his. He thought, a smile finding its way to his face.

A few minutes passed by before both brothers finally finished their respective food in silence.

The rays of the crimson moon slowly dipped into the room, banishing away the endless shadows that lingered in the corner of their eyes.

Klaus let out a light yawn before slowly closing his eyes as he lay on the bed.

“Good night, Alexandros.”

“Good night, bro.”

Xavier replied with a light smile.

It had been a long time since his brother or anyone last called him by that name.

A really long time…

He had a light smile on his face, an indescribable feeling coursed throughout his body, whilst his heart surged with indescribable current of emotions.

He couldn't really describe this strange, distant yet familiar feelings in words, he just knew that it felt great and he wanted it to last forever.

Cleaning the table and everywhere else, with a light beaming smile on.

He dropped onto his bed afterward.

Letting out a light yawn, he slowly closed his eyes.

They had to sleep as early as possible.

Knowing they only had a few hours to rest before the hunt began once again.

For how long exactly…

Xavier pondered on this for a long time before his mind slowly wandered off, drifting into a deep slumber.
