Chapter 32 - The First Batch

Fuyo appeared behind the boy like a tiger stalking his prey. He looked directly into the old bees eyes. He had quite the strong countenance. He was blind in one eye with a sword scar appearing from top to bottom. He lost his eye in battle. Both of his wings were ripped off, there was nothing there. One of his legs were gone and replaced with a wooden one and across his stomach were many sword scars.

Every step he took looked like it took quite a bit of effort to accomplish but regardless, he was the first adult bee to arrive here.

"Hey there, I'm Fuyo. I will be your host today; we weren't expecting guest so early. The food won't be ready for another 60 minutes. We are currently heating up the stone plates and my colleague has just gone off to get everything."

"You're not fooling me are you boy?" This old man was very domineering; he had experienced countless horrors so he was very distrusting against others. But he loved his son, so when his son invited him out, despite the work he had to do he came along. He had doubts about the whole event before he came out because it just sounded too good to be true.

"Of course not sir, I am just a good Samaritan helping to feed the poor." He smiled that innocent smile and frightened the battle hardened old man. "Whoops, wrong expression. Dammit." Fuyo swore in his head. He forgot that his innocent expression in this body was akin to the devil ascending to the mortal plane.

"Ah, very well then. I will wait around." The old man suddenly lost his courage when he saw that face, a person that had been through many harsh battles had admitted defeat.

"Really?" Phew, Fuyo let out a sigh of relief.

A few more adults arrived and Fuyo welcome them. The kids sat around watching the fire burn and heat the hot plates.

It had been 20 minutes already and the plates were nearly heated up. The black and maroon magic carpet descended from the sky and landed neatly.

"How did you land it so smoothly?"

"I read through the little guide booklet again, it says the more times you say Andale the faster it will go. But you can also say Luka to slow it down. That's all I did."

"Ah, so it was that simple? Well then, it's good that you are back. The grill is piping hot, shall we start?"

Tuzai dragged a bag of salt and threw it on Fuyo's back. He dragged it over to the stone grills. She grabbed the 100 liters of oil and also followed Fuyo through.

She couldn't put the items in the bags of holding because they were full so she had to carry them on the carpet.

"Okay, let's tip some oil on the hotplates." Fuyo grabbed some oil and started tipping.

"Tip the oil on the plates? Where did you learn this technique?"

Fuyo remembered that in this world they didn't use oil for cooking, they used it for lamps. He started to sweat because he nearly gave away his secret.

"I, uh.... Invented this technique myself?"

"Oh okay, what does it do exactly?" She was very curiously, they were basically rich now but she still spent 50 silver on the oil. They couldn't squander their money or else they would be poor again.

"It cooks the meat without it burning, it absorbs into it making it more succulent and it adds flavor."

"Lamp oil does all that? Amazing." She couldn't believe it but she trusted Fuyo.

It looked like Fuyo dodged a bullet, he wiped his head and nodded, phew...

The oil came to a simmer and Tuzai withdrew a massive amount of meat from the interspatial ring and cut it up with the sword. The beast meat was many times larger than a cow so it took quite a bit of effort. After a few strikes she stopped and took a break, then continued until there were many pieces of steak.

"Okay great, let's get cooking." They threw the steaks onto the grill and started cooking.

"Ew, are they going to make us eat beast meat? He wasted our time."

Ten or twenty adults that had come out started walking away; Sakura's parents also turned to leave but she stopped them. "No Papa, Mama, it's really good, trust onii-chan."

They looked at her with concerned eyes but decided to stay back with her anyway. They weren't concerned about the food, even if it was a lie and it tasted disgusting they didn't mind because they were used to starving. What bothered them was her calling a stranger onii-chan. How long had she known this guy? No longer than a few hours.

The smell drifted into the air and spread out, the kids that stayed behind were mostly the ones that had parents that had yet to arrive.

Drool started forming at the corners of their mouth.

"Mama, Papa, can you smell it?" Even they couldn't help but drool, beast meat? Is something like that really good?

They had tried beast meat before; in fact many bees had tried it because they were starving and had no other choice. They would sometimes come across dead beast in the forest and they would try eating their flesh. But it was impossible to eat it raw, it made them vomit endlessly.

Cooking wasn't foreign to them, they would often create herbal soup by boiling water but vegetables weren't a common commodity and cooking meat had never been tried before. It was a human invention so they had no knowledge of it.

Just by the smell they could tell it was good. "Tuzai can you use your qi and sprinkle salt over the meat, not too much and not too little."

"Baka, you make me do everything and exhaust up all my qi. Even with the pills, it doesn't recover the mental strain I feel from overusing my power. Hurry up and open your meridians!" She scowled at him but she was happy inside, it felt good to be depended on.

The first batch was ready and waiting. "Okay everyone, who's first?"

Some of the other bees were a bit hesitant, but the first group of kids that tasted the meat first came up with their parents, somehow they had convinced them to stay. Sakura came along with her parents and also the one eyed; one legged wingless old man came forward with his son.

They took their giant pieces of steak and took a bite. Simultaneously the spectators heard sounds. But it wasn't the sound of "mmmm..." or them uttering words like "delicious" and "perfection".

It was not the sounds of happiness that Fuyo expected; it was not the sounds of delightment that Tuzai wished to see.

It was the opposite.
