The rattling of pages could be heard, as Quartz shifted through them. Once in a while the jade cover would scrape against the table it rested on, if those pages so happened to be turned to quickly. (So I could hunt wolves without it raising any flags.) Since he did not have a core, he would have to take up hunting monsters in order to make a living, but people without cores could only hunt low risk monsters. The wolves he had just read about were the strongest thing a none core individual could hunt. That was with plenty of training in weapons, although what mattered was results. Quartz would be able to sell the bodies to the hunting guild. Because he was now sixteen cycles old he would have to live on his own soon enough, but for the time being he could stay at his parents as they too piety on him, that however would not last forever.
A grey wolf held its head high in the air, its nostrils flaring. It had caught the scent of a human. Swerving through the tree lines, its agile body curved forward, as it reach its destination. No core meant the human posed little risk to its life, or at least that is what it thought.
A symbol under Quartz arm shimmered with a yellow hue, as he traced pure mana over its form, completing the arrow. Having tried this with the basic elements first, he had decided to use one of the more advanced ones, which was very practical for this battle. As the yellow arrow zipped towards the landing wolf, it crackled with an electric current. This arrow embedded itself into the wolf’s chest, causing all its motor functions to cease, as the current plagued its body. “That went better then expected!” (I still need to finish it off though.) The arrow had only halted its movements, Quartz needed to come up with a means of ending its life, while preserving its body. Flashes of his own death flooded his mind, as he contemplated how to take a life. (That’s it!)

Inspired by his own death Quartz set off to work on creating a new symbol. A half circle of wind mana could be seen at the edge of both arms. Fire mana circled him, as he used it to trace over both lines at once, he stretched out both hands, as though he had been attempting to hug the wolf. This caused the spell to create a circle of hot air around it. However Quartz was not done yet. Having erased his fire and water ball spells from his finger tips, he shot out small balls of lighting at the outer rim of the hot air circle. Friction from these lighting balls passing by, caused the temperature to rise exponentially. This in turn ended the wolf’s life, not a trace of oxygen for it to breath.
The bodies of the wolves began to pile up, as Quartz perfected his art. “Alright I guess that will do.” Once more he created a new symbol, this time using plant mana. The pattern was that of twisting lines woven together. It worked exactly as he had hoped. Vines rested on the ground, which he fashioned into a harness, dragging the wolf pile behind him.
The clerk at the desk turned her attention to the door. Three loud knocks rattled away at its surface. “Coming!” What greeted her was shocking, a young man, who seemed to be no more than sixteen cycles smiled as he introduced himself. “My name is Quartz, how much can you give me for these?”
