Colossus' Dream
(56) Pain.

(56) Pain.

POV Narrator

The tsunami-sized waves crash and tumble into each other, like terrified insects fleeing for their minuscule lives. In the bottomless ocean, the dark shadow grows exponentially larger. The Gods’ expressions widen in disbelief; an unexplainable sight developing before their shining eyes.

Like a peerless mountain growing from the ocean’s depths, the Colossus rises to his full size. Around his waist, clouds linger like a white belt. A green forest covers his whole back, seemingly unaffected by the sudden change in orientation. Towering above the other trees, to the same height as the Colossus’ head, an unusually large tree rests on his shoulder.

Cries of shock fill the group of Gods. They’ve always been in control and knew about everything of the world, but the Colossus’ sudden appearance shakes them to the core. Outside Zohn’s house, unable to stay hidden with the island’s violent rumbling, Achous stands rooted, his legs shaking with fear.

Towering ten kilometres into the sky, the Colossus curiously observes his surroundings, a thought running through his mind, “Well, this is a first; how did I wake up in the ocean, didn’t I go to sleep on land?”. In front of him, a status screen appears.

The Colossus’ eyes widen in excitement, “Zohn is going to love these new powers. He was extremely interested last time I told him about the evolution powers.”. Unmoved by his new powers, the Colossus calls out energetically, “Zohn, where are you? I’ve got a surprise, which you might want to hear.”.

The Colossus’ voice rumbles through the air, but no one replies. The Colossus waits a few seconds, confused by the silence. From the sky, the voice commands, “Attack!”. The ball of essence launches itself straight towards the Colossus’ towering figure.

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

The Colossus observes the approaching attack. Unable to understand the situation, he calls out again, “Zohn, what’s going on?”. Unfortunately, silence is his only answer. Instinctively, he raises his right hand towards the approaching attack. With a deafening rumble, they both collide; the shockwave forces him a step back, the earth rumbling under his enormous weight.

His granite brows tighten into a deep frown. He slowly lifts his right hand, an unfamiliar feeling of pain, pulsating from its broken surface. Time seems to slow down around the Colossus, a deathly silence enveloping the world. He looks towards the giant tree on his shoulder and asks robotically, “Jeffery, where’s Zohn?”. The tree, with one of its branches, gloomily points towards Zohn’s courtyard.

The Colossus’ eyes focus on Zohn’s house, ignoring the trembling avian. In the centre of the courtyard, Zohn’s aged body lays motionless, a small tearstain adorns his wrinkled brows. The Colossus shouts in panic, “Zohn, wake up!”. The goliath remains motionless.

Unseen rage corrupts the Colossus’, kind heart. His gaze, overflowing with hate, rests upon the shocked Gods; his mind subconsciously targeting the only possible culprits. With unkempt sadness, he shouts at them, “WHAT DID YOU DO TO ZOHN?!”. Around his towering body, an impossible amount of spirit essence instinctively gathers.

In the sky, an unfamiliar feeling of fear sweeps over the group of Gods; their minds stunned by this insane sequence of events. The voice hastily commands them, “Quickly, form a barrier!”. The stunned Gods spring into action, Ages of experience guiding their actions.

In the sky, a multicoloured barrier of elemental essence takes shape, blocking the way between the Colossus and the Gods. The Colossus’ expression remains unchanged, a low whisper escapes his lips as he concentrates the spirit essence on his fists, “These people are worse than dust.”. With an earth-shaking step, the Colossus punches towards the Gods.

His essence covered fist slams into the hastily constructed barrier. Like a fragile plate, the barrier shatters on impact. The resulting force pushes the Gods back. An ugly expression rests on each of their perfect faces, this humiliation scarring their egos.

The Colossus’ rage subsides slightly, a newfound feeling of heartbreak overpowering his anger. With the giant tree’s help, the Colossus gently rest Zohn on his giant hand. His booming voice grows soft as he pleads desperately, “Please wake up Zohn, now isn’t the time to sleep. Didn’t you swear that you’d be my companion until the end of time? You can’t break that promise, I won’t allow it!”.

In the sky, the Gods’ expressions turn strange. One of them asks, “What should we do? Do we attack again?”. Another God replies, “We have to do something.”. None of the Gods move, unsure of what to do next. After a minute of silence, one God asks doubtfully, “Do we really have to kill it? It’s never done anything bad before we attacked it. Hell, we didn’t even know it existed until now…”.

Suddenly, the voice responds, “We will proceed with our attack. It doesn’t matter whether this being has done anything wrong, the fact stands that we can’t allow any possible obstacles to get in the way of the designs.”. An unenthusiastic sigh escapes a God’s mouth, but no one objects.

The Colossus’ legs grow weak as he collapses to his knees. A giant tsunami erupts around him, but he ignores it. The Colossus’ full attention rests on Zohn’s motionless figure, the world around him turning seemingly empty. A tearless cry sounds from his granite mouth as he says, “A life without my dearest friend, is a life I rather not live.”.

The Colossus looks up at Gods as they prepare their second attack, but he does nothing to stop it. After a couple of minutes of preparation, the Gods launch their second attack. The ball of elemental essence flies towards the motionless Colossus, a strange melancholy permeating the air. Slowly, the Colossus lowers his head, his kind gaze forever resting on Zohn.

With the attack a mere hundred meters away from the Colossus, a golden barrier suddenly springs up around his giant body. From the surroundings, as if it’s speaking to every single creature at once, an alluring, feminine voice gently says, “The final Age has come to a close, and the end is within sight. There’s no need to cry my child, his time has not come to an end. Now, stand up; You’re my firstborn and meant for so much more than you’ve ever realized.”.
