Collect the World - Book 2 Chapter 39

Chapter 39

Sharn joined the military almost two hundred years ago as a young orc.

Early in her career, her superiors noticed her talent and gave her the opportunity to join an elite legion within the military. Since then, she prepared for the opening of the Grandsky Realm, undergoing grueling training.

It was all for this moment.

The Undead Hydra she flew towards was the greatest foe she had faced in her entire life, and yet, she didn’t hesitate to perform her duty. Power flowed out from the amulet around her neck and into her body, raising her stats to the point that she wouldn’t die instantly.

Rushing up to the undead monster, Sharn gripped her warhammer and swung fiercely.

BANG!

The sound of metal grinding against metal rang out as her weapon clashed with the Undead Hydra’s claws. Sharn grunted and took two steps back, her warhammer almost flying out of her hands from the collision. From the looks of it, the stats of the Undead Hydra were slightly above hers, even with the War array.

“Again!” Sharn shouted, using Intimidating Cry, a skill that empowered her next attack and weakened her foes. Advancing, Sharn smashed her warhammer into the Undead Hydra’s hand, knocking it aside and giving her a window to push forward.

Just then, her Danger Perception skill warned her of an imminent threat.

Sharn slid to a halt as the jaws of one of the Undead Hydra’s heads snapped shut in front of her. Kicking off its nose, she jumped back and avoided the Undead Hydra’s second head from crunching her to bits.

Sharn’s eyes widened in alarm as the third and final head arrived above her.

Thinking quickly, Sharn manipulated her innate gift and increased her weight a thousandfold. She dropped to the ground, crushing the spine of the Warg Hound she landed on.

Without delay, Sharn spun around, tossing her weapon toward the Undead Hydra.

She transferred her innate gift’s weight increase to the weapon a moment before it slammed into the monster.

BANG!

The Undead Hydra’s chest caved in as it flew backward from the impact.

Upon landing, the monster climbed to its feet, roaring angrily.

When Sharn saw her attack had dealt 4% of the Undead Hydra’s health, she knew she had a fighting chance. Recalling her weapon with a skill, she was about to rush forward when other monsters intruded on her duel with the Undead Hydra.

WHOOSH!

At that moment, a dozen enchanted weapons came from behind Sharn. They cleaved through the monsters surrounding her while roots burst out from the ground, pushing the monsters between her and the Undead Hydra aside.

“Good!” Sharn charged forward and empowered herself with Last Stand, a skill that increased her defense depending on the number of enemies nearby. After a few steps, she jumped off the ground and flew high above the Undead Hydra.

Leaning forward, she activated Heroic Descent.

As she plummeted, she utilized her innate gift, increasing her weight to the limit.

In response, the Undead Hydra raised a head and opened its jaws, wanting to swallow Sharn whole.

Sharn showed no fear as she fell straight into the Undead Hydra’s mouth, and due to her massive weight, she slammed into the back of its throat, blasting a hole straight through it. Her momentum carried on as she collided with the Undead Hydra’s back.

BANG!

As if a mountain had landed atop the Undead Hydra, it sank into the ground, its bones cracking from the impact. A few even shattered.

Although Sharn’s innate gift increased her weight, it didn’t affect her movements. While pinning the Undead Hydra to the ground with her body, she repeatedly smashed her warhammer into its spine, sending bone shards flying with every blow.

Eventually, the spine gave way and broke down, turning the monster immobile.

Just as Sharn was about to celebrate, the Undead Hydra split apart, turning into three Undead Serpents. Her joy was short-lived as they surrounded her.

Meanwhile, back on the Blockade, Keith did his best to prevent any monsters from locking down Sharn. He was so distracted that he didn’t notice the monster horde had reached the bottom of the Blockade.

“Don’t let them damage the wall!” An officer shouted, startling Keith.

To his left and right, soldiers bravely jumped off the ramparts and engaged in close-quarters combat with the monster horde. Keith’s eyes grew bloodshot when he saw the intense fighting. The monsters outnumbered the defenders five to one, wounding many soldiers within a few clashes.

Taking a breath, Keith recalled his conjured weapons, deciding to support the people below him instead of Sharn. He focused on maiming or crippling the monsters instead of going for the kill, wanting to alleviate as much pressure on the soldiers as he could.

Thankfully, the celestial grade Arsenal of the Desert didn’t disappoint Keith. Even though the monsters had a level advantage, it still cut through their flesh like a hot knife through butter. Keith’s actions immediately gave the soldiers a breather.

However, Keith was one person, and there was only so much he could do.

As the fighting continued, Keith witnessed one death after another.

Filled with self-blame, Keith glanced at his status, observing that he had spent five million mana so far. Initially, he planned to consume ten million mana a day, but with how terrible the battle was looking, he couldn’t give a slimeball anymore.

Keith pointed forward.

A second later, fifteen Laegur Beam arrays appeared over the heads of the soldiers in front of the Blockade. Lined up in a row, they fired simultaneously, sending fifteen rays of death into the monster horde. Each beam pierced through a dozen monsters before running out of energy.

For a moment, the fighting in the vicinity stopped.

Everyone watched as a large section of the monster horde toppled over, dead.

Keith felt his senses numb after consuming one and a half million mana.

Yet he didn’t stop there.

Using Quickdraw once more, he conjured another fifteen Laegur Beam arrays in a different area where the fighting was severe.

Again, another section of the monster horde dissipated, leaving behind loot.

One time…

Two times…

Three times…

Keith conjured thirteen waves of Laegur Beam arrays, wiping out almost all the monsters within his line of sight in exchange for almost twenty million mana.

After performing such a spectacular feat that left all the nearby troops wide-eyed, Keith staggered and fell over, utterly exhausted. Spending so much mana left Keith feeling hollow as if someone had dug out the essence of his being.

A nearby defender, a middle-aged elf woman, knelt beside Keith, asking loudly over the sounds of battle, “Are you okay?!”

“I’m out of mana,” Keith replied in between breaths.

“Hang on,” the elf grabbed Keith’s shoulder and hoisted him to his feet before helping him to the back of the ramparts, where a support unit took Keith off the Blockade. Keith’s vision blurred as someone carried him to a medical tent behind the Blockade and placed him atop a makeshift bed.

A nearby doctor approached, their eyes flashing with a blue hue. It only took them a moment to discern Keith’s condition. Turning to a nurse, they said, “He’s almost acquired Mana Sickness. Let him rest.”

At this point, Keith fell unconscious, unaware of what happened after.
