When one thought of flying and going through the sky, their mind would immediately go to the bird. A graceful creature, one that could soar through the skies before being shot down and turned into a delicious, scrumptious meal to dine on with friends. However, they still exuded the one thing that all humans desired in their life: flight. Was it not romantic to fly through the skies, to go through the clouds and above everyone else, to look down at the world up above. However, such a thing was nothing more than a fantasy, something that could only be imagined as a dream. After all, humans could not fly, for they had no wings nor mystical power to do such a thing.
Until now. The Conquistador, with the power of his most recently transformed soldier, was able to fly. One would think that the wings granted to them would allow them to achieve such a goal, but that was not the case at all. The monster was able to fly without the use of their body at all. Rather, they could fly around with the usage of the blessing.
There was more, though. The black cloud above their head was able to cover their whole body, becoming something similar to that of a shield. This had the same traits as the smoke that the enemy used earlier: melting physical matter and defending against any mystical attack that would come flying at them. Last but not least, their projectile power was expanded even more.
Before, this was a single blast that would focus all the power to rip the target inside-out. This would apply to the most critical point of the struck object, allowing them to instantly take down anyone within seconds. However, there still needed to be time for the energy to take control, thus giving the victim time to escape from their predicament.
Now? The energy blast would not do anything similar like that. No, what this would do was create a gigantic explosion that would warp the area within the strike zone. Anything that would be in the blast radius would then have a load of divine energy consume their being, before being broken apart piece by piece. Such a thing was far more useful, especially since the effect was immediate.
While yes, this wasn’t a surefire way to kill anymore, it still did damage. That was more important than anything else, especially when they had multiple soldiers coming in to attack. So, with the plan set in motion, everyone got to work.
The soldiers on the ground would all rush back to base with the wagons, making sure to keep an eye out for any ambushes in the case that the enemy soldier had leaked outdated information. While they were doing that, he and his newly blessed warrior would be up in the sky, running reconnaissance and making sure that they would be able to take down any of the intruders with their newly gifted powers.
And with this, the Conquistador had one simple question: was this how angels felt?
Being able to fly without any problems felt… amazing. At that moment, he felt as though nothing was wrong in the world. He was at peace with the way things were going, with how life was going. The feeling of the wind going through his hair, the freedom to simply go wherever he wished without intervention…
This was a dream come true. However, he couldn’t lose focus completely. After all, he had to focus on one thing still: any soldiers that were down on the ground that could threaten his operations. Whatever the case, he kept his eye on the ground and remain focused. He couldn’t let the joy of flying get to him completely and cloud his judgement. No, he needed to ensure that everything was in place.
Though, he could allow himself a moment to enjoy the flight. However, he wasn’t able to do this for long.
Within a good while, he noticed movement. With that, he stopped flying forward, before moving towards the area that he had seen the strange behavior.
There. The small force that the bastard had mentioned earlier was going through the alleyways, all of them heading towards his base of operations. Right, that wasn’t good at all, and he certainly couldn’t let that fly.
He’d have to alert his troops of this situation. With that, he gestured to his blessed soldier and gave the instructions, before going in closer to take a look. He didn’t need to worry about the orders going through, the soldier was fully loyal and would get his orders delivered and done. What he needed to worry about at this instance was taking account of the incoming threats and figuring out what to do.
He kept flying closer, making sure not to make any noise as he did so. As he did so, the view of the enemies got more and more clear, before he had a good eye on them.
They were certainly soldiers, that was for sure. The five that were mentioned earlier were definitely monsters, though they were dressed far more professionally than he expected. They had scale mail armor that covered their entire body, hiding each of their features, minus the face. Their mouths were too large to cover up, which happened to be full of sharp teeth that had barbs on the sides of them. Each of them had gigantic legs that were covered up with a chain mail dress, though there was one thing that helped make him a bit worried: their arms.
Stolen novel; please report.
Their arms were similar to that of humans, but they were covered up with plate mail greaves that were colored completely black and red. That wouldn’t be too much of a problem on its own, but the fact that there were small flickers of flames that were coming off of the pieces made him rather concerned.
He knew the bastard had said these things could jump far and shoot fireballs. Their legs definitely told him that they were capable of some great athletic capabilities, but the fire? He could see that, but more than ever, he had to wonder: was the only thing they could do was merely shoot fireballs? He couldn’t believe it, especially since they all had weapons of their own.
Dual swords, a mace, a war hammer, a shield and spear, and last but not least, a double-headed war axe. Those were their equipped weapons, all of which were made with the same material as their greaves. That told him that these weapons could probably burst into flames as well, which definitely provided some problems as well.
That meant they had a possible defense against his own monster’s attacks. Fire was one thing they could use to counter any melee attacks, as the overwhelming heat could cause damage. Putting all of that in his mind, he focused on the leader of this small group: the soldier that had a lion’s helmet over their head.
This one was covered in full plate mail, though the metal seemed to be made up of some kind of yellow metal with red lines all around. Whether that be from the usage of paint or the material used to make the armor, he did not know. What he did know was that all the abilities he was reminded of.
A strong body that made most attacks do nothing. The ability to spawn metal spikes from the ground. Then there were all the other mystery powers that he was not aware of at all. That was all something he had to deal with, which could be done by baiting the enemy. Though, the last thing that made him pause was the weapon this bastard was using.
A gigantic flamberge was hefted over their shoulder, going far beyond the height of the enemy soldier. That thing had to be double their size, something that made the Conquistador absolutely floored. The fact that this bastard was able to walk around with such a weapon without any problems was insane and threatening. All of this meant one thing: he’d need to be careful about how he proceeded from here.
The best method to move forward was to use stealth here and now. Actually, now that he thought about it, couldn’t he possibly use his divine blessing to take control of the five monsters and wait for the best moment to backstab the fool? They hadn’t spotted him, and he was high up in the air, which meant that the only ones that could even come close to harming him were the monsters.
Launching spikes from the ground certainly wouldn’t do anything, seeing as how he was so far up in the air that there was no way for anyone to strike him from the ground, not unless they had some far-reaching projectile attacks. Wasn’t this the best situation for him to take advantage of?
He wanted to slap himself. After all, he almost allowed himself to be a complete fool, thinking about trying to fight this fool and possibly waste the lives of his soldier when he could simply take care of all of this with stealth. In any case, the only worry was exhausting all of his divine energy and falling to the ground, but that was a simple fix.
He went ahead and flew to the one building that was close to the enemy, before settling himself down on the rooftop. There. Now, even if he ran out of divine energy, he still had the capacity to escape if needed, and he didn’t have to worry about falling to his death anytime soon.
With that, he poked his head over the side to peek at the enemy squadron. Once more, he confirmed that they hadn’t spotted him, which meant this was the best time to strike.
His soldiers hadn’t arrived yet, true, but that didn’t matter. Even if he was spotted, he honestly doubted those monsters could jump above four stories in a single move. He’d have plenty of time to fly away and try again next time. With that, he took a deep breath, before focusing on the one with the war hammer and bringing the might of his soul down onto them.
The monster hadn’t been paying attention, which meant there was no way for it to defend against the spiritual attack. With that, he was able to destroy the soul and change it to his desire, converting the monster to his cause.
There was barely a reaction from the others. The Conquistador couldn’t help but chuckle and grin. Ah, life truly was great.
He started to shoot off more divine attacks. One by one, each of the monsters fell under his control, converting to his cause and becoming his loyal soldier. Interestingly enough, he did notice that he didn’t inherit their fire abilities, something that did make him confused.
These monsters were special, weren’t they? They had an ability and with the way the dead fool had said, they were granted some form of divinity. They weren’t rebelling, either, which meant he had full control of their mind and soul. If that was the case, then why didn’t he have access to their abilities?
Was this because they weren’t given true divine right and were merely warped by failure? Or was this due to the fact that they needed to receive the divine powers while they were under his control? Either way, that would have to come to testing next time. He had the divinity in his hands with that one soldier, he could always simply reuse that blessing over and over to confirm his hypothesis.
In any case, he looked over the edge once more to look at the street. The retinue was going down the road, the full group moving with the wagons, as they had their weapons up, ready for a fight. All the commotion certainly grabbed the attention of the enemy commander, who turned their head towards the noise. They sniffed once, twice, before growling and marching towards the main street, gesturing for their troops to follow.
The soldiers walked with them, but that was because the Conquistador made them. No reason to give the enemy commander any reason to suspect their troops had gone rogue. Not until it was time for the big reveal, anyway.
He couldn’t wait to see the dumb look on the bastard’s face when his own soldiers turned against him.
