Chapter 16 The Aftermath

Chapter 16 The Aftermath

When the Sound of endless notifications ringing in Daimon's head started to go off, he let out a large grin, knowing that it was the sound of the Wyrm's timely death beneath him. Slightly injured by the fall and laying upon the corpse he stood up and sat down beside the crater created by the huge crash and entered meditation to recuperate from his wounds. Meanwhile, Albert who stood upon the cliff was giggling uncontrollably at the foolish human who fought a monster much stronger than it once more and walked away unscathed after defeating the creature.

"How much luck does he have to win that battle, anyone else would have been terrified by the beast and fled for their life. Remarked Albert in between his hysterical giggles.

While meditating Daimon felt a sudden spike in his core which caused him a small amount of pain, looking at his core he was able to see that it was in the process of changing.

Core has been upgraded to level 2

The system and pain broke him out of his revelries by informing him of what was taking place. His core had upgraded however, he had no idea as to how or why the upgrade had happened.

When the core finally completed the upgrade his body began to change, his muscles contracted growing more powerful and defined, his bones and skin grew slightly harder and the blood circulating his body traveled at an increased pace. It was a painful process, having one's body change and grow rapidly even if it was only minuscule changes, the pain would have brought him to his knees had he been standing.

Recovering from the pain he stood up and began sensing the energy in his body. Moving around and getting a feel for the changes showed him that he had gained a small power boost as he simply felt healthier and stronger than before the battle, it almost made the pain worth it. The changes within his core had however been more extreme, as a few rounds of mana manipulation showed that he could now call upon more mana, control it easier and even feel it in the air around him slightly more than he could before.

He began to look around for Albert to ask him about what caused the change to no avail as the orb was nowhere in sight. The lack of help from the annoying orb was starting to get on his nerves. Pushing his feelings to the side and finding himself almost fully healed, he decided to first scout the area as he didn't want any incapacitated creatures to heal and attack him. Walking around he saw that a few of the bodies on the ground had been out of range of his loot bot so he decided to do it manually. How did loot work though? He questioned did they have to be his kills? If not could he loot them? Well with only one way to find out he rushed over to a shard of the rock giant above ground which had remained after the Wyrm pulled it under. Placing his hand upon it and using loot, he was shocked to find that it did indeed elicit a response.

Rock Giant level 38 Looted as it was not your kill loot reduced by 50%

"Well, that answered that question". exclaimed Daimon as he appeared happy to get at least something from the corpse.

Hearing a peeved sigh coming from behind, he turned around and came face to face with an aggrieved Albert,

"Dam scavengers it seems every world has them, little pests", he exclaimed.

"What do you mean Albert?" questioned Daimon in response to the riled up Albert.

"Every world does not have the same classes, for example, this world could have a fire mage class whereas another world won't, however, some are universal, one class in particular which fits the requirement is called scavenger, it is an extremely distasteful class which allows one to harvest other lifeforms kills with a 100% loot rate, while providing next to no other benefits, only the lowest of the low would choose it and your actions disgust me". Replied Albert.

"Hey it's just free loot, no need to be so harsh would you prefer it if I just let it go to waste". Remarked Daimon. Albert failed to respond so to appease him Daimon mentioned that if he would lighten up on the subject he would buy him something nice from the shop with the funds. This elicited a predatory laugh from Albert, which made him feel that If the orb had a face it currently would host an evil grin upon it. The next words from Albert cemented that idea in his mind.

"Well due to the success of us cores being granted a companionship with other lifeforms to help and guide them the system has deemed us as an independent entity and allows our companion to purchase upgrades for us in the shop", replied Albert in a hearty tone.

Daimon felt like he had just fallen into a trap, bringing up the shop and typing in core companion he was met with a notification,

Core companion not found access denied.

"Ah damn I forgot about the contract" exclaimed Albert who now sounded extremely dejected.

"What contract Albert?" questioned Daimon.

In his vision, a contract appeared

Contract with core companion

The core Albert would like to offer you a contract of companionship, if accepted you will live together and thrive together.

The core Albert has bindingly promised to help Contractor Daimon Santos with all of his needs without issue.

The contractor will be obligated to protect the Contractee to the best of his abilities should the need arise and remain loyal to the system.

Any breach of the contract will result in severe consequences

Accept Decline

Looking over the contract Daimon Laughed "Albert this contract states that you have to help me with all needs without issue, won't that be a huge problem for you considering your attitude"?

Albert scoffed "What attitude" he exclaimed. Sensing Daimon's stern look he said in a more relaxed tone that it wouldn't be a problem and that he would help. So Albert what does it mean by 'protect you'? I thought you said that no one hurt or see you"?

"Well some of the upgrades are impressive, there are ways to give me a body, Upgrade my processing speed, and a wide range of other things". Stated Albert excitedly.

"Ok here's the deal ill accept the contract however you better help and no more giggling like a crazed girl! replied Damion.

"I will help you but the other request is not going to happen" replied Albert instantly.

Almost unwillingly Daimon hit the accept option on the contract and without warning a link was formed between Daimon's core and Albert. That was when the voice of Albert sounded in his head. "No, you should have warned me" Cried Daimon. As the Companion System entered his mind making him aware of the details involved in the process. Their mind was linked. Daimon stood horrified as Albert giggled inside his head. "What have I gotten myself into" exclaimed Daimon as he regretted the decision immediately.

When both finally calmed down Daimon delved deeper into the connection and realized that he could now hear and sense Albert within a distance of 500 meters, if Albert's sense of distance was to be believed.

"Ok time to get looting Albert, can you point out the unclaimed bodies, and ill loot them, also if you could show me the still living creatures we can finish them of quickly".

Whether it was the contract or maybe Albert was having a good day he floated of and hovered above the bodies for Daimon. After a quick round of looting and slaying injured creatures, he had harvested a total of 50 non- kills which the loot bot hadn't collected and finished of 20 creatures who were on their last legs. The endeavor earned him...

"Albert, what do these cores do"?

"The cores can be used for many things, such as enchanting equipment, trading, refining your core, and alchemy.

"How do I refine my core? Also, it leveled up to level 2 after the battle can you explain how it happened"?

"Well yes now I can, the system would not let me mention it before the contract was signed. Firstly your core can level up by using it like a muscle, this is what happened to yours, with use it will level, this involves using your mana abilities, physical stats, and the ambient mana in the air. And lastly, items, Items such as the beast cores can be refined while meditating to increase the level of your core. This method however can be slow, a level 2 core such as yours would require a huge sum of level one cores and a lot of time spent meditating to absorb them all before it progressed to level 3. The opposite however is also true if you have a core one level higher than your current level the process will be much faster. I must warn you however if you try and absorb a core more than one level higher than what you possess your core will shatter and you will die".

"What are the benefits of upgrading my core though Albert, and how much are these worth".

"The benefits affect your body as a whole you will gain a better grasp of mana, an overall increase to your stats, and better control over your body. In terms of worth, with how scarce they are right now a level 1 core should be worth 700 Star coins, a level 2 will be worth 4000 Star coins, And a level 3 will be worth 1 Planatary coin, which is the equivalent of 10 thousand Star coins.

Daimon's jaw dropped in shock, "that's a lot of money" he exclaimed.

"Not really replied Albert maybe at your basic level however you will soon see that even a rare skill purchased from the shop costs thousands of Nebula coins, the ones you looked at were all common ranked" snickered Albert.

Finally understanding the value of money and his core, Daimon ran into another problem, yes he was rich however all of the money was sitting in a pile on the group he couldn't store it anywhere, yes they were small however there was 9000 of them.

Pointing at the pile he looked at Albert and asked him if he had any ideas, Albert rapidly told him to buy a spacial pouch. Activating his watch he went on the auction function on the store and search for the pouch however it came up with no results. Frowning he did the same search directly on the store's site and was shocked by what he saw

Spacial pouch common weight reduction 50%- holds 300 items, Currency stacks physical materials do not. - Cost 1 Planetary coin-.

The damn system wanted 10000 Star coins of him! he was outraged. Albert sensing his anger spoke to him and said that the pouches usually don't drop from low-level beasts so most planets won't have any yet, meaning that the system can see them for a huge price. counting his stocks he only had 11200 Star coins, gritting his teeth he hit purchase and watch as the mountain of gold before him disappeared in a flash of light and got replaced by a small pouch.

Not willing to speak about it he began heading towards the loot box hoping to recover at least some of his losses. Getting closer to it Albert exclaimed, " oh I missed one". Zipping over right below the cliff he found the extremely injured Burmese python. Upon seeing it Daimon realized that this was the creature that had impressed him during the war. Albert, what were my rewards from that battle? He grinned.
