Chapter 29: Even the best plans

Luke saw Jace bounce as soon as the meeting was technically over faster than anyone but him could follow. It was kind of amazing seeing how quickly Jace could move at the time, given a large number of chairs between him and the door, especially when he was hungry. Luke gestured for the leader of Haven and her representatives to follow him to the backroom in introducing them to Tabitha and Elizabeth.

As he had explained during the speech, they were going to help Haven while Luke helped Norwich. After both of the other towns were safe, everyone would group back together and defeat the last lieutenant as that was the most likely time for the general to attack them.

Sarah and her attendants filtered into the backroom, where Elizabeth and Tabitha were waiting, with Luke following after. Once everyone found their seats, Luke nodded towards his squad leaders to introduce themselves. Tabitha and Elizabeth shot up and stuck their hands out towards Sarah. "It's a pleaser to be working you, ma'am; I'm Tabitha." "Names' Elizabeth." Sarah shook their hands and responded. "The pleasure is all mine. It's nice to see the people I'll be working with for the safety of my town." Sarah gave each of their hands a hearty squeeze and a good shake. "Now, let's get down to business to protect my town. I'm a front liner with a buff. My buff increases the stat of my choice for everyone around me by 10%. So far, we haven't seen an upper limit to the stats added, with the highest recorded being 12." Luke seeing that things were going well, excused himself to talk to Norwich about their strategy. Tabitha was the next to speak. "I'm an ice shaper; I can control and form ice much faster than a typical mage and usually use it as armor for CQC."

Elizabeth quickly spoke up after Tabitha was finished. "I'm an Inventor with a vibration specialization. I make and use powerful equipment to fight."

Sarah nodded, "I think we can work with this. Lukes told me that the lieutenant focuses on speed and most likely has a dexterity of over 300. If we're going to beat it, we need to disrupt its movement somehow. Either of you has a good shot at doing this, but it would work best if we acted together. Elizabeth, do you have anything that could warp the terrain?"

Elizabeth nodded, "With some modifications to my Earthquake boots, I could make them have a bigger area of effect."

Sarah smiled, "Good, Tabitha, can you blanket the area in ice after Elizabeth finishes her attack."

"Of course I can; it might take a lot out of me depending on the size of the area, but I can," Tabitha says with a confident smile.

"That's good; I can frontline while you recover your mana in the back. There isn't much to figure out until we fight the lieutenant. Can you guys be ready to leave in an hour?" Both Elizabeth and Tabitha agreed to meet Sarah at the gate and spit off to prepare. They both said goodbye to their squads for now and collected their things. An hour later, all three of the plus Sarah's followers left Llyn for Haven. Over a two-day walk there, they further discussed their plan, refining it down to Elizabeth opening with her boots. Tabitha freezes the ground and attacks from a range while Sarah tangles with the lieutenant. Sarah would switch her buff around over the fight, starting with intelligence. They spent one day at Haven, which both Tabitha and Elizabeth noticed was much smaller and not nearly as lovely as Llyn. The next day, bright and early, they left to fight this lieutenant. Thankfully for them, the lieutenants only moved once every week, so tracking it down would be easy as they knew exactly where it was.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Over the time they spent traveling, Elizabeth had tuned her boots to cause more environmental damage in preparation for the fight. It only took them five hours to reach the lieutenant's layer, which only stressed their importance. If they fell, it would only be two or three weeks until Haven followed. Steeling themselves, they approached the lieutenant.

The second they could see the lieutenant through the dense foliage, Sarah gave the signal to Elizabeth. She nodded and activated her boots while the others stabilized themselves. The ground rippled from Elizabeth's feet, causing trees and the underbrush to ungulate up and down. So soon as the earth stopped flowing, Tabitha pushed her ice shaper skill to the maximum in a new way, covering over a 500-meter circle around them with a hard layer of ice. Naturally, they were ecstatic that this was going exactly to plan so far. Sadly for them, they could not comprehend the power of having a stat in the three hundred range. The lieutenant just rolled with the waves suffering no damage. When ice covered the terrain, it stood up, showing them what it looked like for the first time. It stood at over six feet tall with a thin, wiry body that emanated grace. Its face was angular with sharp features, and it wore a white shirt and brown shorts with no shoes.

Then it moved; no moved was not enough to describe how it flowed faster and more graceful than they had ever seen before. It covered the gap between them in seconds and was standing next to Tabitha quicker than they could process. Tabitha's mind flashed back to her fight with Jace, but even he couldn't compare to this agile lieutenant. The first blow knocked her off her feet. The second had her sliding on the ice hills they had created in shock. She recovered in time to see Sarah attempt to distract the lieutenant. When her spear got within a meter of the lieutenant, it was already gone. Its fist cracked into Elizabeth only for it to screech out in pain, clutching its fist with its other hand. It had broken its hand when it punched Elizabeth's body armor, and once again, she thanked whoever was out there that she had bought it.
