Chapter 10: Arbiter of the Arena

Chapter 10: Arbiter of the Arena

Elizabeth had never seen something thing like that before. The two titan's brutal way of fighting had left her with a loss for words. Sure she had seen and even done, some arena fights before but they were normally to knock out, and even when it was a fight to the death it was never that brutal. Fighters normally tried to end fights as quickly as possible because with integrated tech almost anything was possible. Still seeing the two behemoths rage and rampage against each other was extremely impressive. This was the first, and maybe only, time she had seen two levels 25 or higher being clash in a real, not one-sided, fashion. She knew now that that man, Jace, was her ticket to a better life if she could just convince him to let her be his personal inventor. And why were his scales growing up his arm?

The Arbiter had never been called on. She wasn't meant to be called on unless there was no one left in the arena roster who could match the challenger. The Arbiter pondered on this as she walked into the arena. The walk from the holding cell was bleak as she saw each person quiet, hoping that they get picked next.

As the Arbiter enters the arena, the light blinds her for a second and tears fill her eyes as she sees the sky for the first time in decades. She wipes her eyes to see her opponent. She looks up at the towering beast.

He is covered in thick deep purple scales, that spoke of durability that mountains would wish for. His hair reflected a dull light of steel grey. His hands or more aptly claws glimmered in the light like there were tiny strands of wire coving them. His face spoke of many things but above all others, it spoke of consumption. Of an all-consuming void that would stop at nothing to eat its prey. Then his face split in a mockery of a smile, showing sharp blood-stained teeth.

Then the feeling changed and the Arbiter stopped cold. This not the feeling of a mortal, no, this was the feeling of a dragon or one on the path. One she had to stop for the good of whatever worlds he would go to in search of another dragon. This dragon must die.

The Arbiter steeled herself, drew her blade, and took her stance. It was time to slay this beast.

Right before the announcer nervously started the fight the dragon shrunk down to her size. The Arbiter didn't know why it did but was thankful for it. The Arbiter assumed that at level 40 she should have an advantage over this newcomer to the system given his problems with the last two fights. Just as she was dashing towards the dragon he let out a roar that stilled her blood and stopped her cold.

Right after he was beside her stabbing out with his right claw. She moved her sword to block the blow, expecting to easily block the blow. When the blow landed she felt her hands crack in at least two spots from the overwhelming force the dragon was able to produce. She tumbled across the arena floor in shock as she tried to process how he could have so much power.

Coughing blood, she stood up expecting an attack from the dragon, but no attack came for the dragon was where he was before now just staring at his hand. His hand was in taters. Completely destroyed. Then the Arbiter saw something that filled her fill horror. His hand was healing at a visible pace.

She had only heard of one being on her planet who could do that and he was level 50. This dragon was at most 25 or 26 given his new world couldn't support someone much higher. If she let this dragon live she was damning billions of people when the dragon wars started. She redoubled her resolve and started the channel all of her energy into her body and blade. She would end this the only way she knew how. The Way of the Sipped Flower.

By using the Way of the Sipped Flower she grew significantly faster but it was extremely energy-intensive. She would use that time wisely. She entered the first stance, the Clipper. She vanished and appeared right next to the still-recovering dragon. His eyes grow wide when he sees her show up next to him. Her blade sweeps out, aiming for his left arm.

Blade meets scales and sparks fly. The dragon's scales chip where her blade meets them. The Arbiter's focus narrows down to a pin point. Her blade meeting his scales is the only sound her in the arena as the audience holds their breath.

One by one his scales break like pottery, shattering into dozens of pieces. She starts to feel hope that she will win. Her body stops mid-air and his arm snaps out like a hurricane and impales her chest. For a second she can't believe what just happened. She was winning! What went wrong! it's then she realizes that over the course of the fight thin threads had slowly wrapped around her ankle. There was enough slack that she didn't notice it.

She looks up that the dragon she failed to kill with despair. She had just doomed to many people. She hears one last thing before the darkness devours her.

"Good fight." So simple but she could not agree less, she never had a chance.

"Good fight," I said right before the light left her eyes. I wait for a second in honor of our fight before enlarging myself and devovering her whole.
