Everyone watched as the small turtle-man fussed around the former fire-fighter, straightening his jacket and even generating what looked to be a pillow with a shell design under his head. Then with a satisfied sounding squeak he shuffled back before looking up and smiling at everyone.
“Is he always so…”
“Fastidious?”
The professor looked down at Crush and gave him a quick grin.
“That works.”
“I think Crush sees Till as a… brother of sorts-”
New Ben snorted softly then held his hands up placatingly as both the professor and Crush whirled on him.
“Sorry. I just,” New Ben looked off to the side like he was thinking, “don’t really get that vibe from Alex. He’s a friend, I’d, and actually have, go to war with him. But… brother? Does he have that level of emotional range?”
“Till… accepted Crush. In the Multiversal Dungeon, He treated Crush as an equal. An eccentric equal, but, all things considered, an equal. Based on his reaction at the time, and again here, that appears to have been a new experience for Crush. Mama?”
Mama Qucha nodded slowly then knelt to stroke Crush’s jaw. A gesture that pleased the little Shellmind greatly.
“You would be correct, wawa. In my experience, neither Adventurers, nor Deities, accept System entities like young Alex has. That list of entities includes yourself, though you are truly unique now. Hadrigath, or Crush as he now prefers, has lived a solitary existence for eons. Except with my husband. Who collects the love and friendship of all System entities, who flock to him like… his children. Fascinating, I would never have made the connection, even with Hadrigath’s name for Vir.”
New Ben watched Alex sleep then shook his head.
“As nice as this distraction is, surely there is something we should be doing?”
“Scouting parties…” the professor seemed to run out of steam as she looked around then sighed, “a scouting party? Why does this Outpost appear be be growing, organically?”
"The Outpost is Alex's… Domain,” Heph looked to Mama who nodded. “Where his power here is reflected. Even in slumber, his influence on Earth 39 remains strong. You will need to explore and re-establish the Aegis Network as it is disconnected from the Multiverse Network.” The large Smith paused and looked off to the side and a frown darkened his craggy features. “Chosen, you need to return to your Earth. Events are transpiring in your absence."
All eyes turned to the Captain who suddenly looked to the side and got a faraway look that was quickly replaced by a rare display of anger.
“I have stayed too long and ignored my duties. Lost Vegas is under siege.”
Heph nodded gravely, clapped his large calloused hands together then pulled what looked to be the drumstick of a pterodactyl and started to eat. At the sound of the clap Alex sat up and looked around, saw everyone looking down at him and sprang to his feet while withdrawing his new hatchet in preparation.
“What’s wrong? Son of a bit-”
Alex dropped the smaller melee weapon and looked down at it then at his blackened hand..

“That was unpleasant. Manka?” His eyes widened slightly as he took her in. “You’re Mama’s Chosen now? Congrats.”
The Incan healer waved a hand, conjuring an intricate weave of turquoise symbols that washed over Alex’s hand then dispersed into a mist that was absorbed into the former Warrior.
“I thought your Buff fixed this… issue, Mama?”
Alex pulled up a screen that displayed the Buff he’d received in the Multiversal Dungeon and read over it.
Incan Might
Resistance to all Chankan effects and debuffs while within Multiverse Dungeons
Increases the efficacy of weapon and item effects
“Oh…”
“I can only influence things to a certain degree. That influence wanes the longer I’m in your presence. Even now, my assistance is only tolerated as the System treats my involvement as your Sponsorship Boon.”
Alex nodded while crouched in front of the weapon then sighed deeply.
“Alex, what does the weapon screen say?”
“Hmmm? Captain? Oh…”
With a twitch of his fingers Alex sent the weapon screen to the gathered group, rocked back on his heels then stood in a fluid motion while everyone stared at the Greek God, the largest and most imposing member of the group..
“Hephaestus?”
The God turned to the Captain when he heard his name.
“Yes, Chosen?”
The Captain looked skywards for a moment and muttered quietly to himself causing Mama Qucha to giggle softly.
“Could you look at the screen?”
Hephaestus looked around the group and seemed to recede into himself at all the attention. The hood of his cloak, something that had been lowered to facilitate easier eating, appeared to lift up on its own and shrouded its wearer in shadows. With a flick of his wrist a large, partially consumed pie disappeared and the God looked off to the side while turning his back on the group slightly. Mama Qucha leaned in the direction of the Captain and whispered softly.
“You’ve done wonders with him. He’s usually very shy. In multiple millennia I’ve never seen his hood come down, even while eating.”
“Why does he eat so much? Ah, your Goddessness.”
The Incan Goddess giggled again and Manka covered her face and looked away quickly, her eyes dancing with contained mirth.
“Because he’s a literal forge. Before he became a God he was a Smith of mythical skill, one of his last evolutions before assuming the mantle of Divinity was to literally become a forge. The food is consumed within the fires of his soul almost instantly. You’ll notice he is no bigger than a large, powerful man, regardless of the amount he consumes.”
The Captain looked shocked then a look of profound sorrow washed over his face and he made to step towards his God but the Goddess restrained him gently.
“Not now, young Theodore. Just watch. Few mortals have watched the God Smith at work.”
Hephaestus nodded to himself then reached down and plucked the hatchet from the ground. With a wave of one large hand the building they stood within disappeared much to the shock of the entire group, save Mama Qucha. They now stood within a gigantic living cavern that rang with the sound of hammers, bellows and other noises one would associate with a workshop. The Captain looked around.
“This is the Olympian Foundry, Hephaestus’ Domain… how did?”
“Hush my Chosen. There is work to be done.”
The Captain fell silent and watched as the large God limped deeper into the huge cavern. Several beings of similar size stopped what they were down and stood to watch. Without clothing that shrouded their features the group could see that they were carbon copies of the Grecian smith.
“Avenging Flame of…” Heph growled softly, all of a sudden resembling a large hunched bear. “Alex, come here.”
Alex jogged over to the smith then stopped when a large metallic something came into view.
“Heph, what is-?”
The smith turned to see what had distracted the Lord of the Achachilas then frowned.
“That? Nothing. A mistake.”
“Heph, it’s a…” Alex reached towards what they were looking at and drew in a sharp breath. “I don’t know, Eternal Equilibrium sees something in the threads around it.”
“Eternal…?”
Alex waved a hand, sending a screen with the Abilities description to the God while walking closer to the device.
Eternal Equilibrium (passive): Embody Viracocha's cosmic harmony, attuning yourself to the harmonious forces of creation. This passive ability grants a continuous aura of celestial balance, providing subtle enhancements to your cosmic abilities, ensuring they remain in harmony with the cosmic weave.
Heph dropped the hatchet to the ground and limped over to Alex who was staring at the device intently.
“What were you trying to create?”
“Life.”
“Well, that certainly explains why Eternal Equilibrium was interested. You said it doesn’t work, what is it meant to do?”
“Earth’s like your 39 are dead, that offends me. Many Earth’s across the Multiverse, including large swathes caught up in wars between Pantheon’s have been reduced to dry husks. Those Earth’s can’t create, they can’t invent, they can’t do anything. This… mistake was meant to change that.”
Alex reached out and pressed a hand against the surface of the machine. It looked like a metallic pyramid that rose to Alex’s chest. Based on the enhancement of sight that Eternal Equilibrium gave him, the threads that should connect the device to the rest of the Multiverse were loose and seemed to wave lazily with bursts of light. It looked like multiple wires that had come loose and were shorting out, which meant the Harmony of Creation passed it without tethering the pyramid to the Multiverse. Asserting his influence on Viracocha’s Domain allowed Alex to tether the threads, reconnecting the pyramid to the Harmony of Creation and by extension, the rest of the Multiverse. Stepping back he watched as light infused previously unseen runes and engravings. Heph made a choked noise and with several gestures multiple Heph lookalikes shambled over. They hefted the device and moved it to a more prominent location in the Foundry. Watching on Alex saw segments of the pyramid shift and realign in complex configurations. Oddly it looked like the pyramid was unlocking something exceptionally complex. Without looking back Heph returned to where he had dropped the hatchet, collected it from another of his apparent clones and kept limping deeper into the complex like nothing had happened.
“Ah… what just-”
“Follow him, Till. I’ll keep an eye on this… thing.”
Alex nodded at the professor and jogged after the God who was now muttering to himself in Greek.
“Heph? Are you ok?”
“Of course.”
“You seem agitated. Should I have left the,” Alex looked at the interaction in his HUD, “the PryoGenesis Altar as it was?”
“PyroGenesis Altar? I called it a Promethean Spark.”
“Both work.”
“No. I am… I am used to my creations working. Or, another Deity providing the final piece of the puzzle. In rare instances, mortals I Blessed provided inspiration or a catalyst. Never… you’re the first mortal with no connection to me that has aided me in any way. Additionally, you did not ask for payment.”
“Payment? You’re helping me, and more importantly, you’re helping my Captain. The list of people I trust and respect is short and he’s near the top of it… after her,” Ales motioned over his shoulder at the professor. “If you feel like payment is required, consider any assistance I can provide already paid for.”
The Greek God bowed his large head slightly then stopped in front of a pool of golden liquid.
“What do you envisage for this weapon?”
Alex looked at the hatchet then at the pool, multiple questions rattling around in his head..
“A smaller version of my War Axe. There are times when fighting with a massive axe sounds great but it isn’t practical. Having two of them would be interesting.”
“Two hatchets?”
“One for defence and one for offence. Or, two for offence but I can pretend to think about defence”
The God nodded slowly.
“May I see your main weapon?”
Alex withdrew the Volcanic Axe from his Inventory and sent its information to Heph.

“A formidable weapon. Though… was it always in this form?”
Alex looked off to the side thinking then shook his head.
“Originally it was a hammer, but it didn’t fit me.”
“Indeed. A hammer, even a war hammer, would be too slow for you. Still… this axe isn’t…if I’m to fix the hatchet, it would be a waste not to enhance your axe.”
Alex gripped the axe possessively then relaxed as a calming warmth flowed from it into him. Taking a deep breath Alex extended his hand, passing the axe across to the God. With a nod Heph took the weapon, flicked a thick finger against the blade then grunted and shook his head.
“It doesn’t sound like your weapon.”
“Doesn’t sound… what?”
Heph waved his hand dismissively and turned back to the pool of golden liquid. Alex stepped back and watched as Heph examined the axe closely, holding it up to each eye and at one point inhaling, seemingly to take in its scent. The large, hunched God said nothing that Alex could translate into words, but was responsible for an impressive number of noises at varying levels of volume. Looking around Alex noticed a large, Heph-size chair, without checking to see if the God noticed, he took up residence and watched the smith work. Without warning the golden liquid surged up and out of the pool and Heph hobbled into the space. With a wave of his hand the liquid, which had been hanging suspended above his head, dropped into a transparent golden curtain of flowing light.
“What the…”
Alex’s voice trailed off as the Greek God of Smithing casually tossed the axe against the golden curtain of light where it disassembled itself causing Alex to hiss like he’d been punched in the stomach and slip bonelessly off the chair.
“No-”
Again Alex’s voice trailed off, this time when Heph raised a large hand to quiet his spectator. Alex dragged himself back into the huge chair breathing heavily, unable to pull his eyes away from the axe, or more accurately, the pieces of his axe. The golden liquid moved in response to Heph’s gestures. Watching the golden curtains lulled Alex to the edge of sleep and the former Fire Warrior jumped when Heph called to him.
“Alex, your axe is complete.”
Sliding down from the God’s chair Alex felt like an infant getting out of a high chair. Without thinking about what he was doing, he clenched his fist and the reassembled axe tugged itself free of the golden liquid with an unpleasant slurping noise, then slapped into his outstretched palm.

“Oh my…”
Heph looked over and nodded.
“This weapon feels like you.”
“I’ll take your word for it.”
Alex tapped the area that listed the weapons grade..
Ancestral Relic of the Inferno Lords, reforged by Hephaestus and imbued with the essences of Incan Deities Supay and Viracocha
“Wow. Heph, this is...”
The stooped God just grunted and went back to his work, facing the now disassembled hatchet, the golden liquid reflected in his large eyes.
Alex ran a hand over the axe’s shaft, physical he couldn’t feel any change. The blade was still made of the same pitted dark volcanic stone. But something was… looking closer Alex could see a shape engraved into the blade. Looking back at the weapon’s description provided the answer. A dark red rune pulsed like the axe had a heart beat. Rolling the axe over in his hands he found another rune, very similar in design but a lot more detailed. This one shone in alternating hues of gold and silver and looked very similar to his unshrouded Creation Flames.
Alex reclaimed his seat and gazed with undiluted reverence at the War Axe while Heph continued to work until the God sagged then staggered out of the empty pool. The golden liquid fell back into place and Heph collapsed into the chair… as Alex hastily vacated it. The God didn't even seem to notice that he almost sat on the former Warrior.
“Heph, are you ok?”
The God waved a hand then pulled what looked to be an entire cooked cow from his Inventory, followed by a large rough blade and started to remove large sections of cooked meat. The meat rapidly disappeared into the God’s mouth with only a couple of perfunctory chews. With a tired wave of his large, meaty hand two hatchets appeared in front of Alex, spinning in place. The same hand then dropped to the chair and appeared to be holding the God up.
“Take them, they’re yours.”
Alex reached out and took a hatchet in each hand.

Alex gripped the hilts of both hatchets then frowned and looked down. After readjusting his grip he frowned again and alternated which hand he was holding each hatchet in.
“I-”
“They don’t fit you.”
Alex looked up to see Heph watching him intently. With a shrug he handed the hatchets back to the God.
“They really don’t. I can’t… they just don’t. Is this common?”
“Not common, but not so rare that I’ve never seen it before. Either you have a weapon that fits you so well that it’s,” the Smith God bit the inside of one cheek, “an extension of you and your latent Domain. Or, the System is asserting its control and pushing you in a certain direction. You could ignore the feeling but in my experience that never ends well.”
Alex looked at the hatchets then up at the God and shrugged.
“Thanks for the axe, Heph. Hopefully the hatchets find a new home.”
The God threw the S-Grade paired weapons into the pool of golden liquid and watched as they melted.
“They have.”
Alex’s eyes bulged as he watched the hatchets get destroyed then shook his head at the flippant way the God dealt with the situation.
“Alex, when you have been around as long as I, and created as many treasures as I… weapons, armour, devices, it’s rare that something holds sentimental value. When the bulk of your Pantheon looks at you like you’re the spare, then very few things, including people, are worth devoting time to. Theodore, your Captain, he has surprised me.”
“He’s a bloke you can’t help but like.”
“Indeed.”
“So… will you stay here or head back to Earth 0?”
The God smiled and snapped his large fingers and the Foundry disappeared and they were suddendly back in the Command Centre on Earth 39. New Ben jumped from where he was bending down and reaching out to something as Alex and Heph appeared beside the group.
“Till?”
“Professor.”
“How was it?”
“Upgraded the War Axe, returned the hatchets.”
“You…”
The professor looked off to the side then nodded slowly.
“They didn’t fit you. Interesting. I wonder if…”
“If what?”
“Nothing, nothing. Just thinking out loud.”
“More of your foreshadowing? Let’s head home to Lost Vegas.”
“No!”
Everyone turned to the Captain who had whirled to face Alex, halting his rapid pacing.
“Captain? We’re under attack. I need to come back with you.”
“Alex.” The Captain pinched the skin between his eyes and sighed deeply. “The moment you come back to Earth 0, you know this. The moment you come back every defence our world currently has will fall.” He sighed again. “Our world would burn. The longer you stay here, the more chance our Faction, our Earth, will have.”
“I can’t come back?”
“Alex, if you went back now there is every chance, every single chance, you’d destroy Earth 0.”
Alex sagged and looked out through the windows in the building.
“How long?”
“The entire leaderboard would need to be over level 70. Over level 80 would be better. Other than me, only Dave is that high. The conflict in Lost Vegas should push a lot of people higher, but still, it'll kill a lot as well.”
“I hate this.”
“I know you do.”
“If I'm honest, I'm surprised you care.”
Alex and the Captain turned to look at the professor.
“Professor?”
“Your whole thing is only caring about a couple of people, now you're worried about everyone on Earth 0.”
Alex blinked, opened his mouth to reply then seemed to think about it.
“You're right. Well, not about that being my whole thing, theres more to me than that.” Alex looked around but no one said anything. “Wow. It's not the people that will die, it's the people that will kill them. When I think about them,” chains of flame coiled around Alex's arms, his Mantle burst into flames and his voice dropped till it resembled Supay’s., “they call to me.”
“There it is.”
Everyone turned to the professor who was, surprisingly, smiling.
“It?”
“What Supay added to your new Class, Till. Consequence. Can you turn that off?”
The professor indicated the chains and flaming Mantle and Alex cut off the trickle of Inner Fire.
“This is what you were talking about before. How he judges the souls of the slain. Right?”
The professor nodded at New Ben then turned back to Alex.
“You can feel it?”
Alex looked down at his left hand and frowned.
“Supay’s gift.” All eyes turned to Mama Qucha. “Of late the halls of Uku Pacha have been… quieter than usual. Supay has withdrawn deeper into his citadel. When Alex Evolved… even before that. When you first wore that mantle, it could only mean one thing. Uku Pacha would once again assert itself on fields of battle. The Coricancha would again weigh the souls of the slain. Something Supay had left to the Morrigan, and others, of late. But… as a mortal, you can't be expected to challenge Deities.”
Alex staggered and his eyes filled with fire while ethereal robes draped themselves over his body and head. Dark runes flickered like flames around him and a bell tolled in the distance.
System Occupation Acquired
Accept
Yes/No
Occupation Name: Shadow Sentinel of Supay's Sovereignty
Description:
In the dim glow of twilight, you assume the garb of Supay’s Arbiter, weighing the souls of the slain with unyielding impartiality. Through the echoes of their deeds, the whispers of their virtues and sins, you discern their rightful place on the Cosmic Tapestry of Consequence.
Amidst the hallowed silence you stand as a beacon of Divine Consequence, bound by the sacred duty to uphold Supay's sovereignty. With unwavering resolve, you banish souls to Uku Pacha's cruel embrace, where Supay's dominion reigns eternal, or, consign them to the depths of the Abyss, where justice knows no mercy.
“That hurts.”
“Till?”
“The robes, they're like a constant freezing brand. They suck at the heat in my body. At my Inner Fire.”
“That would be Divine Consequence.”
“A System Occupation?”
Alex turned to New Ben and nodded.
“Did you accept it?”
“Not yet.”
“You need to. Occupations are weird, they don't offer you extra power but, depending on what it does, it can give you access to ways to get stronger. I didn't know what mine did for years. They're notoriously light on information, but exceptionally useful.”
“Level 100 is-”
“Impressive.”
“This is crazy.”
“Most people double their power, you're literally evolving to be closer to a Deity.”
“What?”
“Alex, B-Grade is only possible if you’re Blessed or Chosen by a Deity. That being gives you access to power they’ve gathered over millenia. If it didn't double your power wouldn't you be questioning the Sys… the way things work?”
New Ben cringed and looked around himself.
“It just seems like a lot.”
“You're the Chosen of two Gods. Adventurers with one in ther corner get more than this. On a fully Integrated Earth, with a huge Faction behind you, you could upgrade every Ability to B-Grade, you could even get some to A-Grade. Thatt would be a waste, but it's possible. Your Evolution has been impressive, but I've seen others that would eclipse yours. Mine for example. You need to re-evaluate what you consider to be powerful. On your Earth you are the definition of power, for now. On mine, you'd be strong, but you couldn't… well, you shouldn’t, take on anyone over 120. Adventurers over that level could destroy you. I don't want to offend you, oh great and powerful Alex Till,” New Ben smiled to take the sting out of his jibe, “but, you need to be careful.”
“Careful isn’t really my thing.”
“Alive is.”
Alex smiled at New Ben and nodded slowly.
“Alive is my thing.” He turned to the Captain while activating a Portal to Earth 0. “I get it, I hate it, but I get it. Look after yourself Captain, if anything happens to you… you’re the only person I have left on 0, if anything happens to you I’ll happily burn it all down.”
The Captain gripped Alex’s forearm and nodded before stepping through the Portal and disappearing. Everyone turned to Heph who was in the process of eating what looked to be a small pig.
“Are you hanging around Heph?”
The God shook his head and took one step back into The Olympian Foundry. One of the Heph copies met him with the rest of the pterodactyl and took his cloak. With a look over his shoulder the large smith smiled and snapped his calloused fingers and the door into the Foundry winked shut.
“Right… thanks for your help.”
Alex turned to Mama and the Incan Goddess smiled and shook her head.
“I’ve reached the end of my time with you, for now at least. If you need me… I may be able to come, but I can’t guarantee it. The System is… annoyed.”
New Ben winced at the Goddesses words then looked around himself. The Goddess came over and hugged Alex then did the same with the professor and Manka who she had a rapid fire whispered conversation with before slipping down into the floor leaving behind pool of water that evaporated into a healing mist.
"As exits go, I think Mama Qucha wins. Style and a heal."
Alex shook his head at the professor as New Ben disagreed with her..
"Definitely Heph, he just stepped away, a servant met him, gave him what looked to be most of a large cooked flying creature, took his cloak and then he closed the door with a snap of his fingers."
Alex withdrew his axe as he walked towards the Command Table watching as the light from the two runes shone against his Bracers.
"Raticide."
The professor stopped her quiet argument with New Ben and smiled at her companion.
"Raticide!"
