My mind wanders off trying to comprehend the amount of information I am being bombarded with, while the Administrator is explaining to me how the system works and how unique abilities are chosen and gained more.
"As you know, users are given access to a System Control Panel, SCP for short, or what every user calls a game menu. It acts like those RPG open-world realities in which every time you do a task you gain XP to level up and stat points to make your more powerful, or it gives you quests and you gain a reward for completing it, or advancements that would give you unique rewards, skills or abilities, or something unique depending on the difficulty," the administrator then pulls out another screen panel.
"But since you basically got yours destroyed before it was even given access, we're gonna need to be a little bit creative." Then he pulls out a small sphere out of nowhere and places it on the desk.
"This device will make it so, you are able to receive the rewards the SCP would usually give, the downside is that you aren't gonna be able to make panels like I do and every user here, won't be able to gain XP, won't be able to store stuff; an inventory, basically every single useful and fun thing a SCP has won't be in this device except for receiving rewards that you don't even know the requirements for," the administrator pity's me a bit while I take in the information.
"Well that sucks… from what I've gathered I am already at a disadvantage," I then try to cope, trying to think of a positive benefit I at least have.
"As for how unique abilities are given, it's based on a user's personal strengths, weaknesses, and expertise, at the same time it's the first kind of its own. Which is the same thing as a normal ability, except you gotta train and work for it. It's just another step above unique abilities, but a lot of users and AGENTS have already got it before you," as he gives a diagram of what he explained.
"What you're saying is that unique abilities can become normal abilities once enough people have it?"
"Correct! The only reason it's called that is because surprisingly according to my employees, they reported that users are surprisingly insecure and actually become more confident and have better performance if the word "unique" is there" the administrator sighs in disappointment
We then stay silent for a minute before he starts talking again.
"Anyways… good news!" The Administrator claps and two more panels appear.
"You are going to be starting with two unique abilities and as I stated anyone can get it, th. Secondly," the panels suddenly turn into a digital screen and turn on revealing two rooms.
"Wait… isn't that my friend's computer room or well bedroom?" I then stand up in confusion.
While I try to figure out what the hell happened to my room, I see Merlon walk into his room and is caught off guard, surprised actually, and immediately puts on his headphones and sits on his chair.
"Oh! So that's what D-81 meant when they said "[You will be meeting with your companion and their boss soon]," Merlon then calms down and going back to his usual calm expression.
"Hey Merlon! It's me, I am alive, I didn't die and who is this D-81?" My question then gets answered by the Administrator.
"It's just another one of my employees, your friend here must have met a Dealer, they basically give contracts for users, as for the number it just represents the number ID, being the 81th Dealer to be ever assigned, nothing special." The Administrator then combined both panels to make talking easier, being Merlon's room and CF's room.
"Ya, the contract basically just meant if I were to share any information to anyone else apart from the AGENTS, your companions, or employees within ISCB, my brain would be wiped without any information same thing said to CF," Merlon then leans back on his chair and spins around.
"Oh as in, like your memories being wiped out, anything related to this place and ISCB?"
"Nope! They meant as in my mind would be wiped clean, from knowing how to use a computer to knowing how to walk," Merlon answers in a laugh sarcastic tone while also being concerned.
"Oh… that's terrifying," I then look at the Administrator to see if that's true and he nods.
"Well anyways, CF should be finishing up cooking his food" as Merlon stops spinning and grabs a water bottle and drinks it.
While I talk to the Administrator about what a Dealer does, to pass some time, CF walks in with a plate filled with food and gets startled.
"Oh crap! Right… forgot the Dealer said the PC can now turn on on its own by the ISCB. Also Oxaminite you are alive and it seems you look fine," he then puts the plate full of food to the side away from the screen, even though we can clearly see him reaching for it.
"Ya I am surprisingly fine, the only thing it did to me is make me not have that game panel, making me at a very big disadvantage ," I became disappointed and both of them cheered me up, very poorly.
"Alright, let's listen to what the Administrator has to say, he has a very good reason on why he turned on the PC's," I then sat back down on my chair.
"Now that your little reunion is done, I will be now explaining Oxaminite's abilities and how you two will be affected by it," he then points at both of them and then another panel shows up behind me, clearing a few panels that aren't important anymore. He then makes a transparent pointer and moves it to the panel.
"For the first "unique" ability Oxaminite is going to get is a passive type. This ability is called Adaptive Resilience:
[A perpetually active ability, or passive ability, that equips its user with the capacity to seamlessly adapt to any environment or situation they encounter, even when they are oblivious to the impending danger. The modifications induced by this ability are transient, fading away when no longer required or replaced by more relevant adaptations. Nevertheless, a fraction of these adaptive changes may persist over time. The permanence of these changes is contingent on their frequency of occurrence, their utility, and their rarity, enabling the user to carry forward a small measure of their adaptation as a lasting attribute. This ability essentially creates a responsive and dynamic shield, affording its user a fluid resilience, primed for continuous survival and efficiency. This can be upgraded and fuse with other abilities]
It fits you well with you being in constantly in danger because of your poor decisions and also being able to quickly analyze the situation you are in and adapt to it, and to have the same effect as you 'leveling up' ," the administrator then shrinks the panel into a small blue orb and puts it into the metallic sphere on the desk.
"That sounds quite powerful, maybe a bit too powerful," Merlon speaks up in a concert tone and look.
"It's actually quite weak, well in terms of starting yes, but it will take awhile for this ability to be good. In terms of abilities from other users, AGENTS, and even HEROES they start with, this one isn't that powerful. I mean an AGENT had the ability called "Relevance" which made him or anything he likes be indestructible and immortal as long as he is well liked and is gaining attention constantly"
This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.
"Sounds like Plot armor," I commented on the ability.
"It isn't, just a weaker and less confusing version of it," The Administrator then makes another panel and a different unique ability appears.
"I think this one is actually a true unique ability as only Oxaminite can have this ability be useful in his unique circumstance and actually obtainable. This ability is called Symbiotic Sync:
[This ability is both an active and passive ability that only manifests itself when a user's system malfunctions or becomes irreversibly deactivated. Symbiotic Sync allows its user to establish a mutualistic link with up to two other users possessing a functional system. Once linked, the users that are linked are able to access the inaccessible system that the user that has this ability aren't able to. With added bonuses of the fact that users that are linked gain the same amount of XP, advancements, rewards, stat points, and more. Additionally linked users are able to communicate with each other without any delay, and also have an astral projection body that only users with this ability can see as if they are right next to you. The downside being that you can't disconnect away from the user that you linked with, you have to make an oath to never betray you and the fact that your progression requirements will be 100% slower and with each user you are linked with. There is an available upgrade and fusions.]. This ability is both powerful and useless, as for one you need to sacrifice your useful SCP causing you to no longer have access to it which no insane sentient and sapient creatures will do, have very trustworthy companions that knows you and are able to sync together nicely, you have to give up your privacy of your system as linked users can change or grab out of your inventory now without you being able to access their system even though you can't access it, and lastly progression can be either 2x or 3x slower, which isn't too bad as there are abilities that makes progression 5x or even 10x slower. But basically this ability is built for you," he then also shrinks this panel into a small blue orb and puts it into the metallic sphere.
"Wait… but we don't have that RPG game system panel thing. We are still in our planet or world and we aren't there to receive it," CF speaks up stating the issue.
"That's true, that's why rather than you guys receiving the link, the device that you are currently using to communicate with us right now will be the one to be receiving it," while the Administrator talks he puts some sort of energy into the metallic sphere.
"Wait… isn't that just making Oxaminite a game character that we control in a game? We can technically "control" his system, while at the same time we also get powerful by doing nothing, and we can't even use the rewards we get since it will be on our PC's," Merlon giving out a good point.
"Correct! As for you not being able to use the rewards that Oxaminite earned on his own, you can technically. As the ability stated, you are perceived as an astral projection so technically you can kinda interact with the environment but very limited, but will just be just floating cameras that is invisible to everyone else, do what you want with that information,"the Administrator finishes up fiddling with the metallic sphere, which is now the size of a grain of sand but glowing brightly.
"That's not what I meant… never mind," Merlon stops and the Administrator continues.
"Since you don't have a system, I can't easily give you the ability. I am gonna need to place this downgraded version of an SCP, more like a Group Oriented Controller, GOC, inside somewhere in your brain. Don't worry it won't hurt a lot," he then brings the orb closer to my face as he makes an expression stating, everything will be fine.
"I can tell you are lying, doctors said that to me once and it hurt a lot, so I am prepared that this will hurt a lot, as for the location put it in the right side of my brain, since I think that side controls most of my visual awareness and my imagination or something like that, I read it somewhere on the internet awhile ago," I then get ready for the pain that the orb will do once it enters my head.
"Don't worry, you won't even feel the orb entering you," the administrator then makes a quick gesture equivalent to throwing something, and feels a slight tickle.
All 4 of us look at each other in silence waiting for something to happen.
"Like I said nothing painful will happen," the Administration assured
"I don't know, I feel a slight headache—actually I feel like my entire body is about to go in flames or like a sharp feeling across my body—-" as I then let out a loud scream and started to spaz out on the ground.
"Holy crap! Not again. Is he gonna be ok?" CF panics abit but immediately calms down.
"Oh right, forget that when users gain an ability, they feel a different side effect, depending on what type of ability they receive. Since Oxaminite received two, one being that allows near instantaneous adaptability to the environment he's in and the other being a mind related ability, he'll be experiencing more than the average amount of pain a user gets." The Administrator then makes an assured sign. "But don't worry, we are still in the restoration room, so he won't die,"
"I think that's good? I can't really be sure about that as he is screaming in pain right now," Merlon lowers the volume down on his PC.
"OH GOD, EVERYTHING HURTS! I CAN'T EVEN FALL UNCONSCIOUS," as I continue to scream.
"WHEN WILL IT END!?"
"Uhhh… it should be done in a few seconds… Like about now." Right after he says it, I stop feeling any more pain and headaches. I then slowly get up from the floor.
"Oh gosh… it felt like my bones, muscles, organs, skin and even my brain were being constantly stabbed, moved and electrocuted at the same time." I then take a couple of deep breaths before being able to talk.
"Oh nice, didn't even need to put you in the restoration pad. Seems the Adaptive Resilience ability helped out in reducing the amount of pain you felt and also made you recover quicker. Now let's test out the Symbiotic Sync, if it's like those taming or contract abilities then you just to look at the user that you want to sync with like thinking, don't close your eyes by the way it will cancel it out, a lot of new AGENTS do that mistake." I then listened to the Administrator and looked at CF and thought of wanting to sync up with him.
"CF, you should see a notification on your device stating to either accept or decline," the administrator calls out.
"Huh? I don't see any—never mind I see it," CF then clicks accept and suddenly a transparent camera with a fan attached to it slowly appears, looking like a hologram as it's blue.
"Huh, I now see a floating camera to my right flying above me," I then follow its direction.
"Nice! So you can see me moving around. When I accepted the sync, it just started generating menus, all over the screen and a tutorial on how to move and interact in the system. Currently checking my own stats," CF then starts doing weird moves and then suddenly stops moving.
"From the sound of it, it seems it worked. I can't really tell as you are the only one that is able to see the users you sync up with. Now sync up with Merlon, and we can go to the final step before you are given your badge, uniform and your own living quarters," I then nod to the Administrator and do the same thing to Merlon.
"Got the request… I now see the menus and the tutorial of what CF was talking about," I then see Merlon's camera materialize being a red and pink instead, but rather than being transparent, it looks more real and weird particles coming out of it, equivalent to a cable TV static but rather than gray like in my head, it's red and pink.
"Alright, I finished with the sync and I can see both of their cameras. I don't know why they are cameras but I'll go with it," I then look back at the Administrator.
"Now that you are done, I will now do the scripted memorial line," the administrator then changes back to his original look, but now wearing dark purple glasses and some sort of secret agent clothing style.
"[Congratulations user, you are now an official AGENT. Take this badge, your new uniform, and the ID number of your living quarters. You are mandatory to wear the badge, as that's the only way to distinguish yourself personally from the other AGENTS and the employees. You are allowed to modify your uniform to your liking, change the design, size, color or just get rid of the uniform and make your own. You are now allowed to roam around the base, rest in your living quarters, talk to other AGENTS or immediately go to your first mission. If you want to start a mission go to your system and hit Missions. You should see millions of them, categorized in different categories. You may now leave]"Suddenly the Administrator goes back to his office design attire when we first talked.
"Well, you can now exit and start getting a mission. I'd advise for you to avoid any missions related to eliminating HEROES, until you are experiencing enough at fighting and gotten more powerful," he then snaps his fingers, making a metallic but soft sound, and the room goes back to normal to being a black cube and the blue system panels disappear, including CF and Merlon's screen. At the same time a hole opens to the right side of the room leading to the outside.
"Sad that I have to go now, I gotta continue my work. I hope I get to see you soon, alive and not one of those HEROES," the Administrator then gets another panel and typed something into it, before another humanoid robot creature appears but a bit shorter and wearing a different outfit.
"Oh ya, I forgot to tell you a couple of things that aren't really that important. If you don't complete 1 quest every 2 weeks you will be fired, you can change your species and look. You don't have to be human, I need to tell you this as once you get out of this room, you're gonna see a lot of different creatures and species here, from magical fantasy type species to sci-fi creatures, new users that turn into AGENTS get weirded out without being told. Alright now I'll be leaving, you can figure out everything else on your own," the administrator then gives a signal to the other humanoid and they both disappear.
"Welp, guess I got a job and new responsibilities.. crap, but at least it's gonna be fun unlike my previous job. Are you guys done yet?" I then walked to the doorway hole and exited the room. The room then disappears, startling me before being surprised and amazed at how this place looks.
"Ya we're done and— Holy shit! What is this architecture and design! It looks amazing and disgusting at the same time!" CF screams in amazement and excitement.
"Not gonna lie, I am not that surprised. This is what it would exactly look like if you combine every genre into one and at the same time what the internet would look like if it was a city," as we look around this place.
————POV the Administrator————
"Sir, when you said "you forgot to tell some 'important' information that you left out" did you tell them about how the difficulty system works? We have already gotten a few hundred AGENTS nearly dying or failing their first mission immediately every week as they put the difficulty into 40-60 stating, "medium difficulty" but that difficulty they mention is at the range of 10-20," the Assistant states her concerns while she gives more work to do while I was away from my desk.
I looked at my Assistant and smiled," Nope. But I am sure they gonna be fine, even if they sort or picked a Mission at the difficulty range of 40-60, they will only need to either stop a boss monster that is doing chaos to another world, stop an economy go bankrupt, charge and command 10,000 soldiers to fight in a battle field that will decide if the kingdom survives, eliminate a HERO;weaker version of HEROES, or providing a stealth operation information gathering to a government. Pretty simple." I give a thumbs up to my Assistant, but she just looks at me in disbelief.
"Seriously! That's only simple to AGENTS that have completed 10 missions already and have gained 3-6 other abilities apart from their unique ability they received. That new user that just turned into an AGENT is gonna suffer and will fail their first mission if they pick the wrong range of difficulty! There's like a 3/4 chance of them doing so," the Assistant folds her limbs in anger.
"Don't be like that, I am sure they're gonna be fine. Of course as long as they read the Mission they picked, then they will be fine," I then lost my positive mood and went back to doing my work, while my Assistant cools down and states her leave and disappears out of my office.
