Reboot: Chapter 9

“Examinees. Listen up, your goal is to defeat ten demons. If you are in a group of two, fifteen demons. Three to five, twenty demons. Anymore than that and you can simply increase number per five based on extra people. Overachievers will be rewarded.” A voice resounded in my mind.

With the way her head snapped up, it seems she heard the voice too. That was forty demons which wasn’t hard to achieve. However, that was depending on if the others had to be there in person.

If that was the case, then a lot of my team wasn’t that useful. It wouldn’t be a problem carrying her around to accumulate kills.

“Don’t worry about it. You are on my team.” I declared.

Her eyelids trembled. Her mouth opened like she was going to say something but I grabbed her arms. A card in my hand just vanished. One of my arms snaked underneath both of hers, the other was above. Locking her arms down and began thrusting again.

I walked out the room with a smirk on my lips. I wasn’t all that surprised that the nobles were yelling at each other. I expected that only one of them had any combat experience. The others probably had more spells to upkeep their appearance than fight demons.

“I think that we should split into two groups. I will lead one. Alyssa will lead the other. This is the only logical way we can kill demons. Otherwise with four of us trampling around, we will end up surrounded and dead.” Joann declared.

“If we split up, we are still going to end up surrounded. There are thousands of demons in a demon army. My brothers fought against them and the weakest soldier was Master level. Even if they both know they support magic, do you know enough offensive magic to kill five demons? Let alone fifteen?” Alyssa rebuked.

Joann's nose scrunched up. “Of course, I didn’t just learn how to gossip. I know the basics of combat magic.”

I leaned against the door listening. This was more fascinating than watching the Knights train on the gauntlet. I peeled the skin off a fruit.

“We should just ask Count Clarke to assist us. I’m sure he would have a reasonable price.” A short blonde said.

“Ugh, do you know how much a demon corpse is worth? Lillian, you should shut up if you don’t know what you are saying.” Alyssa snorted.

“Alyssa right. Demon blood can be used in a lot of blood rituals. Their bones are great for necro magic. That’s not mention their armor, which is rune armor. Some of them might even possess anti-magic armor. Would you give all that up?” Joann replied.

Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.

Lillian stared at her feet. “Yes, I don’t know any helpful magic. I don’t want to die just because of greed.”

The brunette nodded her head to show support. Alyssa and Joann both sneered. “Then you go ask him for help. Me and Alyssa will team up. Discussion over.” Joann snapped.

Both the blondes left right after, heading for the stairs leading up. I wish them great luck. They were going to be cannon fodder. The weakest group of scouts were Mid level Master Magus or Knights. Added on that, they all know detection or camouflage magic. Even I wouldn’t want to engage with them before they pass us on by.

I walked into the room to see the girl was reading the earth spell book I had from looting someone's house. Her body sunk into the tub like she was enjoying life. I shook my head and began dressing in a battle suit. Dragon scales covered dragon skin. It hugged me tightly and was light weight enough not to hinder my speed.

I sat out a spare set of armor. Not dragon armor but it was tough enough to block most blades.

“Get out and get dressed. Also what is your name?” I just remember I didn’t ask for her name.

“Belinda but my friends call me Linda.” She said while climbing out the tub.

She dried herself off before looking at the undergarments. She blushed and probably wondered how many people I slept with to have spare on me. The answer? I totally took them from the target house thinking to give them to the servant I played with.

I attach a short blade to my back and sleeve full of daggers across my chest. You might ask why the need? Answer? Magic could be tracked if they arrive in time. Cold weapons won’t be.

I packed up the room and walked out to see two noble girls and two commoners standing nearby.

“Are you leaving?” The short brown hair girl asked.

“Yes. You can come with but change into something you can run in.”

“Do you want to discuss payment for helping us achieve ten kills?” Lillian's fingers were clenched tightly.

I turned to her and glanced at the other girl, who was a mere Baron daughter. While Lillian might be able to afford it. The other one might not be capable and she was a little chubby. I doubted she would be able to run if we ended up in a bad decision.

“Okay, I want all equipment, the blood, and soul of the kills. You can have the bones and flesh but in exchange I want fifty gold per kill. Fair?” I offer with great struggle.

My ears were twitching like I had fleas.

Lillian's face lit up like walking through a park during sundown. All the street lamps turn on automatically, casting an odd glow over flowers and the lake surface that reflects it.

“Excellent. Do you want gold payment after?” Lillian looked at her companion with concern.

“Yes, that is fine.”

They left me to change and I watched the shorter one go. Feeling a little sad I didn’t push for more. If they weren’t watching me, I would have pushed for more.

I turned my attention to glare through the roof. Watching a woman stare down. Her brow creased as she locked eyes with me. I don’t think she realized that I could see her, for she looked away right after.
