13.5 Bonus Chapter: No Monster Deserves Mercy

Note: This Bonus Chapter takes place right after chapter 13.

(Pov: Katsu)

This was a quest well done. All the captives were free, but now displaced. Apparently, Jackal was a part of a slave trading ring. Most of the captives were demi-humans, and by law, it wasn’t a crime to have them as slaves.

However, there were humans among the captives as well, men and women alike. And this was a crime punishable by death. Adding on to his poor choices, Jackal was plotting an attack on the city. His crimes were likely going to get him the death-sentence.

In my eyes, this was well deserved.

As the knight arrived, they paced Jackal in shackles and lifted him away. Meanwhile, the rest of the knight attended to the captives.

From this point on, it was the governments job to get them back home and help them out. It was no longer my concern.

Off to the side, Amaya was sitting down, recovering her energy by slurping down a bowl of soup, offered to her by the church. Right beside her was a little demi-human girl. Normally, demi-humans were treated harshly, but Amaya was treating this one with kindness. It almost looked like a she was the girl’s guardian.

Strange.

Amaya noticed my gaze. She tried to smile, but I could see that something was bothering her.

[Sixth Sense]

This emotion she was emitting. Though it wouldn’t be clear to others, it was clear to me. Amaya had a hint of dread in her soul.

As to why this was, anybody’s guess was as good as mine.

I came over and gave her a pat on the shoulder.

“Nicley done, Amaya. You did well in your fight against Jackal.”

Help support creative writers by finding and reading their stories on the original site.

Hopefully, that would boost her mood. The emotion of dread didn’t fade, but she masked it well with a chuckle.

“Oh. Well, I didn’t do much. You were the one fighting those elder gnolls. I could never pull something like that off.”

She was a strong girl. And for that, she earned my respect.

“You can go on and claim the reward at the guild.” I said.

“But...is that okay? I mean, you were the one doing all the hard work..”

“It’s fine. Rewards don’t interest me.” As I said this, I made my way to the door leading down to the tunnel system.

“Wait, are you going back down there?”

“There’s one more thing I have to do.” I replied then heading down the steps.

There were still Gnolls down there. I needed to make sure all of them were exterminated.

Most importantly, I needed to do what was morally right. I needed to pay my respect to those fallen adventurers.

Ham and Sally.

____________

Once at the spot where there their corpses laid, I took a kneel. First, I looked at ham. His body was in a gruesome condition, a dark puddle of blood surrounding his body.

Next, my eyes turned to Sally’s body. Her eyes were stuck open, lifelessly staring at the ceiling. Blood trickled out of her moth.

She was killed a blunt force to the chest. From the looks of it she died intently. At least she didn’t have to suffer in her final moments, that much I am glad.

“You both died as warriors, fighting against the ruthlessness of monsters. You’ve had my respect, and now, you have it even more. Rest in peace, Ham and Sally.”

I stood up from my kneel and gave their bodies one final glance.

After four years, I can’t believe this is how we would reunite.

It’s sad it ended this way.

Didn't I warn you two?

Monsters are vicious creatures. Creatures that shouldn’t be allowed to live.

No monster in this monster in the world, or any other world should be allowed mercy.

All of them....Absolutely all of them should be slaughtered.

For you, I’ll finish the job and put an end to the rest of the gnolls.

And I’ll make sure this tunnel system can never be used as a monster hide-out ever again.
