All abilities at this school have to follow a set of rules.
That was a given.
If he had an ability which, in theory, could cut off my hand, it would definitely have to have conditions on it. It was highly unlikely that an ability could both a) be remotely activated and b) deal serious damage, notwithstanding the fact that it was able to be freely controlled by the user and didn’t require them to be seen. The school simply wouldn’t allow something like that to exist.
As such, the searing pain was as bad as it was going to get.
“It’s not going to be fun when Kai’s involved. He’s in a bad mood after dealing with some other caste one bitches.”
“Well, tell him there’s no need to pursue me. I have no desire to get in your way.”
“I’m afraid that’s not how it works. You don’t get to decide that.”
“What are you going to do about it.”
He began to reach into his pocket.
Sigh.
At this distance, I’d probably have enough time to react if he drew a knife on me. There wasn’t a need for me to use my [Mind Breaker]. If he tried to catch me off guard with an ability, I’d have to use [Overclock] to make some distance or block his attack.
He didn’t immediately attack me so I took a step back.
“You’re sharper than you look. I’ll give you that,” he said.
Okay.
He took his hands back out without grabbing anything.
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you, you don’t want to be on Kai’s bad side.”
With that, he walked away.
What a pain.
I had hoped that Sumire would’ve been able to take care of everything. It was surprising how they seemed to be targeting me instead of her. She should’ve been higher on their priority list.
At this rate, I’d get myself dragged into something quite annoying.
Assuming that this ‘Kai’ person, who I found out was 41st on the leaderboard, wasn’t just going to leave me alone, this was going to end with either him or I getting expelled from the school. And I thought that I’d distanced myself enough from that situation.

I guess I’ll skip class today.

Sumire made her way into my room.
“It’s not like you to call for me, Akira. What is this about?”
She walked over and had a seat at her usual spot—my table.
“What happened with the situation with Fern?” I asked.
She seemed a little confused.
“What do you mean? I didn’t ask him for Points or anything.”
“No, not like that. What happened to the people that were after him?”
“Oh, well I managed to beat them after challenging them to a duel. I don’t think much else happened after that. No one from the higher castes have made a move against me.”
I guess they really decided to target me instead of her. That was quite weird. Nothing I did could’ve warranted a bigger reaction than to Sumire.
“Do you know Kai, from caste one?”
“I’ve seen his name, yeah.”
“He’s the one behind all of this.”
“Is it that important, Akira?”
I stretched my back a little.
“It’s inevitable that he’ll come after you sooner or later. There’s no way someone from caste one would just let their followers get humiliated like this.”
“That’s fair. It’d lose them face. You’re suggesting that I take him down as well then.”
“It’s up to you. I’m just letting you know.”
She thought for a little while.
“By the way, how’d you find out about this?”
“Just happened to stumble across something on my way to class.”
She giggled.
“Ah, you’re still going to classes. Are they really that enjoyable? Or are you just bored, Akira?”
“A bit of both, I suppose.”
She leaned back and rested her head against the wall, looking up at my ceiling. As we sat in silence for a few moments, she eventually took out her phone. I was hoping that Sumire would take care of the issue so I wouldn’t have to step in—it was quite a hassle after all. She was indisputably involved, so it wouldn’t be hard to convince her.
“Another thing, you should’ve received your stars from the minions a little while ago, right, Akira?”
“Yeah.”
“I’d like to take a look at the minions. It’d be a good idea for me to invest my Points, especially since there’s something I want to do long term.”
“Sure, I guess.”
I was only able to unlock a single minion with my new stars.

“I don’t have enough Points to buy it.”
Sumire smiled.
“Don’t worry, it looks quite appealing. I’ll transfer you the Points and you can get it.”
“Are you sure?”
“Think of it as a loan. I’ll take all the profits of it until you’ve paid me back, that’s fair, isn’t it?”
I guess that wasn’t a bad idea. It’d help with increasing my wealth a little, though that wasn’t a massive concern of mine.
Before I could say anything in response, 350,000 points were transferred into my account.”
“I’m surprised you have so many Points, Sumire.”
“That’s basically my entire bank. I managed to get a decent amount from the guy I defeated in the duel.”
The terms of the duel must’ve been more complicated than it seemed.
Oh well, I bought the [Battery Minion].
