Chapter 2: Massacring Miscreants in the Mausoleum

Chapter 2: Massacring Miscreants in the Mausoleum

In his imaginary fantasy, Kain was a master of many different types of magic but was absolutely dreadful with Light magic. This was really due to his Middle School Syndrome being all dark and edgy, but the ‘canon’ reason was that Kain had erased his potential with Light Magic when he made himself immortal. After that he could only use Light Magic to illuminate dark areas. To make up for this, Kain created an unholy perversion of Light Magic call Blacklight Magic, which could do most of the things that Light Magic could do but could not heal like normal Light Magic could. Instead of healing the living and damaging the undead, it damaged the living and healed the undead, at least if you were using the Blacklight equivalent of healing-type magic.

Death Magic’s subcategory of Necromancy was only useful for animating corpses, but with Blacklight Magic you could repair the undead you had created rather than just using them until they were completely broken and useless. Necromancy and by proxy, Death Magic had no real healing spells for use on the magority of Undead, but Vampires who were still partially 'alive' could use a spell called Negative Healing to mend their own bodies.

Blacklight Magic was able to use more corrupted versions of any Light Magic spell, so the possibilities were just as numerous as if using Light Magic, but more geared towards fighting against the living, rather than the undead. Magic was not something easily used by the masses either. This was due to its potential power and the risk of a mage running wild magic was only taught to a select few, and few among the humans could even use magic to begin with. If there was any chance of being a magic-user, you would be shipped off to one of the many schools dedicated to a select branch of magic.

Being born a magic-user was not only a random chance, but also an exceptionally small one and therefore the number of legal mages in existence should have numbered at most around two and a half thousand. This estimate was only for those who studied at legal schools of magic, and the schools of magic that weren’t legally taught were the ones that were associated with evil and darkness. Darkness, Death, Blood, and Curse Magic were not taught due to how they were associated with evil and opposition to the Forces of Light and only Kain and his wife Alexis had ever managed to be able to use Blacklight Magic.

This didn’t stop people from learning the other four, and the secret societies dedicated to uncovering their mysteries were not only many but also very illegal and treasonous to the ‘Good Nations of the World’. But none of this bothered me, the risen immortal master of darkness, Kain Anathemas Nekronus von Darksol. He, now Kain reborn, would have to use every trick in the book to survive if the stele was to be believed.

Kain had forgotten most of the fantasy world he had created all those years ago and the laws that governed it, so he went with what he thought his shameful past self would have made the norm. Magic was like the Force from Star Wars, it surrounded and penetrated everyone and everything, but only a select few could tap into its power. That much he remembered, thankfully there were no such things as midichlorians and being able to tap into magic was merely a non-zero possibility that was set at birth. Kain was supposed to be the most powerful mage to ever live as well as being an expert in hand-to-hand combat.

Kain tried to throw a few punches to test whether he would have to build up his knowledge of melee combat from scratch, but oddly enough the motions and techniques came to him after only a few unguided and directionless punches and kicks. Then again, Kain was supposed to favor a more brutal and forceful form of melee combat, and only used actual technique when he needed to. He was a bit like what LSSJ Broly was like in the movies and games, but with his sanity intact and the capacity for using less brute-force attacks and more technical ones. One of the few combos Kain was supposedly known for was using an uppercut to get an opponent in the air before grabbing their leg and slamming them back to the ground, followed by throwing the foe up into the air again and finally use both hands to forcefully ram his opponent into the ground near his feet and finally hitting them with an up-close Destruction-Type spell.

Kain had no time to learn elaborate combos and now that he knew how to fight in melee with his fists and feet, he had to learn how to use magic. Unfortunately, my experimentation in that regard would have to wait, as he heard the clattering of metal and the cacophonous stomping of a mess of people running towards my position. He quickly moved over to a dark corner that would possibly allow him to slip by the reinforcements if he was lucky and the numbers were small, but unfortunately, his luck was not as good as he had hoped. A group of men of various ages all with either leather, cloth, or iron chainmail armor and wooden or iron weapons entered into the room. They were your standard bandit fare; dirty, unshaven, and stinky men bearing arms and armor in various states of disrepair that had the stains of blood and bile on them. While some of them had fully entered the room, some stayed by the only exit. Since he couldn’t sneak out, he would have to fight his way out.

Kain moved with speed he didn’t know he had and sent what he thought was the leader of the bandits flying. While he had been armed with an iron longsword and armored in quilted cloth which lay underneath iron chainmail, he was sent flying into the wall with a single punch. His crappy iron helmet was caved in like it had been hit by a jackhammer and his skull was crushed inwards. When he hit the wall with a sickening thud, it was almost a certainty that he broke even more bones. Not that such a thing was needed, as having his skull caved in was a mortal wound, if not an immediately fatal one. In the time it took for the rest of the tomb robbers to react, Kain had already sent four more people flying and was about to roundhouse kick one of the unarmored ones in the head.

Kain's foot hit another one's head and broke it wide open and sent blood and grey matter splattering in the direction his foot was traveling. Everyone he was fighting was seemingly moving in slow motion as if they were roughly three to four times slower in moving and reacting than he was. He suspected that his Middle School self had made Kain experience a kind of time dilation whenever he got into fights or was attacked, thus making it impossible for a normal person to keep up with him. It was a bit like bullet-time, and it gave the recently reawakened Kain the chance he needed to avoid the blows of his opponents. As the last person inside the room was killed, time temporarily sped back to normal before instantly slowing down again. The reason for this was that one of the fools guarding the exit had pulled out a bow and had fired an arrow. The arrow was only just leaving the bow when time slowed down again, so Kain had ample time to move out of its path and close the distance. After a few more punches and kicks the immediate threat was gone and Kain was the only being left standing.

The end result of his first fight in his new body was a perfect victory. He... Kain had taken no damage in the engagement and had utterly wiped the floor with his foes. He tried to go and pick up one of the iron longswords that were lying on the ground, only to have it vanish once he held it in his hands. At first, he was confused but then he realized his Middle School self must have given Kain a pocket dimension-like inventory ability. He tried accessing it for over five minutes before finally getting it to open which stopped time but also kept him locked in position.

The iron sword, which would have been only useful as an elongated dagger or exceptionally short shortsword previously, was now big enough to be used by himself as an actual longsword. Kain took a few practice swings and quickly got into the motions of expert swordplay. It was a shame that none of the ner-do-wells had a shield or something similar, but he had always wanted to see how dual-wielding longswords would work. He took the rest of the equipment that wasn’t a total wreck and equipped what he could, which had the unintentional side effect of having the equipment reshape to be the original outfit his cringe-inducing younger self had created. He hoped there wouldn’t be any more thieves in the tomb or outside it, but he kind of expected that such thinking would be horribly incorrect.
