A void: The Edge
16 Gathering and taking

16 Gathering and taking

I'm going to need to do two trips, aren't I? Ugh.

I'm currently figuring out a way to stack a piece of purple luminescent crystal on the various other objects I am holding. It helps that the white rock I've stacked everything on seems to be abnormally light. But that doesn't change the fact that I'm holding my crook, a big white rock, a large chunk of bismuth(I think), a red metal octagon with the word stop in white on it and a large dreamcatcher woven out of white silk; All rather unwieldy Luckily most other stuff fit in my pockets.

I've got all of that stuff precariously balanced, stacked onto eachother, in my hands...

Maybe I can finagle it with my feet.

Fuck.

The thing did fly in the air for a moment, totally missing my stack and almost rolling over the edge of the grass into the vast White ocean beyond.

I'm not chancing it, I take my pile of loot and take exactly three steps before my irritation at having to walk back and forth twice overcomes me and I walk back to grab the crystal.

On my way back I have to put my stack down and pick up some stuff that has slipped out a total of three times, but I do manage to get back to where the two knights are speaking in one trek. I end up tripping over my crook as I crest the last hill, dropping pretty much everything as I tumble down with it towards the cube.

I utter the word fuck a single time as I knock my head against the white rock on the way down. The knight helps me up with a mildly bemused look on her face. I take her hand, stand up and dust myself off. I grab the dreamcatcher and the stop octagon and toss them on the cube as well, before dumping out my pockets as well.

In addition to the five items already on the ground, I put down a few smaller objects; A white die, slightly larger than the ones I'm used to, which seems to have some black faces as well now that I've rolled it. Huh.

An ornate bronze compass, its needle spinning wildly.

A pendant necklace, the pendant itself amber.

And finally, an orb made from the same material as the cube I'm standing on right now, but translucent.

"That's all I found. And the silvery goop is just kind of laying there, doing nothing."

The knight nods and begins to look over things, before turning to look at me as if she nearly forgot.

"Thank you."

With that warm fuzzy feeling making me unsure what to do, I decide to leave her to her focus and wait til she's done. Then I hear an unsure voice come from the suit of the white armored knight.

"Is this… usual?"

The anger burns bright in me as I chuckle.

"I don't think anything is going to be usual in here, but who knows. Oh, I'd introduce myself, but I don't know my name, so… just say hey you I guess or something" Another flare of anger as I reiterate what has been taken from me.

"Isn't that going to be a bit annoying when we get more people?"

"You're expecting more people?"

The knight stands up from her inspection as she joins the conversation to answer my question.

"It would make sense. First me, then you, then the Astronaut."

At my questioning look the knight shrugs.

"It's what she is, apparently."

"I see. Well, I hope not for their sake, but I guess that's a bridge we'll build when we get to that river."

My anger spikes again as I look down to discover most of the stuff I meticulously gathered missing. It rises further as I see the bismuth sinking into the cube, disappearing without a trace.

I scramble to gather up the remaining objects before they get absorbed: the die, the compass, the pendant and the orb.

"Sol take me. I hate this place."
